I read about this ruling a few days ago.
A Court is literally telling a land owner that they should have been looking at alternative housing sites.

The ruling, if endorsed by the court after the hearing, would halt the project and require the university to conduct a new environmental study.

The tentative ruling, an unusual action by an appellate panel in advance of a hearing, was signed by Presiding Justice Teri Jackson in the name of the court, whose other regular members are Justices Mark Simons and Gordon Burns. Jackson noted that the ruling was "subject to revision" in the court's final decision, which is due within 90 days of the hearing and could be appealed to the state Supreme Court.

Think how many student residents and Student Ambassadors will miss out on getting maimed or murdered if the project gets blocked.

I lived 3 apartment complexes away from People's Park over 35 years ago. People objected to any use of the property for things like homeless rights back then, too. One thing I know is retaining the park as a place for drug use, crime and homelessness is not an advancement of homeless rights. It's a perpetuation of a deplorable situation. 3+ decades of inexcusable conditions is more than enough. Build the student housing; follow the plan to put the homeless in the hotel. It is beyond time.

" Two chaotic days of destruction at People's Park last year racked up more than $4 million in excess costs for UC Berkeley…."
From a pay walled article in Merc News today. Damages include, fencing, construction equipment and the biggest cost: police.

The libs and lefties can't build much needed student housing on campus property because the other libs and lefties are nuts, even for them.

If a Zachary RunningWolf falls off the top of stacked storage containers around the perimeter of People's Park and no one is around to hear it, does he make a sound?*

*This is a philosophical thought experiment that raises questions regarding observation and perception.

1,100 new student beds in that strip is going to improve the neighborhood substantially in addition to addressing a pressing need. It will raise the % of students living in the UC dorm system from 27% to 30%. That's still a bit low, 40% should be the goal here, the campus administration needs to target other local areas for new dorms.

Apparently they are accepting applications now for volunteer Alumni Ambassadors to patrol the 60% of the project that will remain open space for the community.

*A recent study concluded that by employing advanced negotiation techniques, a volunteer student or alum ambassador can delay getting windmill stabbed for up to 35 minutes.

Maybe the PP cause doesn't resonate with that element as much as with the local original activists, who are in their 70s now.

Thanks for giving Zachary RunningWolf ideas. I wouldn't doubt that shovel has been taken to earth at least a few times there after a spirited disagreement around the ole campfire. Somebody gets dusted in Oakland homeless encampments frequently…which is why when homeless activists claim shelters are too dangerous it is laughable.
