My Mother never received much bigotry growing up Catholic in the Midwest in the mid 20th century but the bigotry (her view, not mine) she did experience was generally that Catholics weren't Christians.

That's interesting, since the Catholic Church is sort of the definition of Christian.

No it is not. Christian literally means follower of Jesus Christ in faith. If one believes that the only way to salvation is faith in Jesus Christ, he/she is a Christian. That's all that it means.

I think superficial knowledge confuses more than elucidates. For example, people who have a vague idea of the freedom of speech thinking it applies to all things and even actions by purely non-government entities. Roman catholic church was started long after Peter himself was executed and crucified, so to say Peter was the first Roman Catholic church makes no sense. The Jewish faith was the basis of the Christian faith, and the actions in Israel, including the pentecost, that was the start of the modern Christian church. The whole basis for the fallacy that Peter, who died before the first Catholic church, was the first pope is that Jesus called Peter the rock on which the church will be built. That is true. And it happened at the day of pentecost when the Holy Spirit was first descended on the believers and Peter preached to people of many different languages and they all were converted. That was the beginning of the Christian church, with the Holy Spirit being with us for the first time being the start of the Church. Not the Catholic Church but the first sermon with the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem in Israel, with many of those converts on the day of the pentecost upon receiving the Holy Spirit being the first Christians, with all of them initially in Israel. If anything, Rome persecuted the Christians, with Nero blaming Christians for the city fires.

It doesn't make any difference to me. But my Mother knows the Bible and the history extensively. She felt it was bigoted to say Catholics are not Christians.
Look, if there are Catholics who put their faith in Jesus Christ and not in men or the created things, then they are Christians. All semantics. But if they worship men and have multiple "gods", then no, they are not Christians. There are Jews who are Christians. In fact, all of the apostles were Jewish. There can be Catholics who maybe go to mass due to upbringing, but if they only put their faith in Christ for salvation (hence CHRIST - IAN), they are Christian. There are many so called Republican "protestants" who put their faith in money, Trump, or power. They, unfortunately, will find out that they are not Christians, and, as Jesus said, they may be told by Jesus, "I never knew you (meaning, never had a relationship), depart from Me."

By the way, do you think bigotry against "Christians", including your mother, was wrong or does the power structure make it so that it was acceptable if not encouraged?
I'm going to have to side with my Mother on this one.

Also, going back to my Mother's childhood is pre-JFK, when I think we both agree things changed very much for Catholics in this country. Also, not all bigotry is mocking and not all mocking is bigotry. There is an art to it. I wish life were more straightforward but it is not. Denying a Catholic is a Christian is not mockery.

But saying Christians (I guess including your mom) are bigots, morons, believe in fairy tale, etc. is friendly mockery and not an act of a bigot hiding behind what they believe is socially acceptable display of bigotry?

Yeah, I think you are making this too complicated. Bigotry is bigotry. We don't need bureaucracy and long regulation and fine print to decide what is acceptable form of bigotry and what is not.

Because you lose the power of persuasion that any bigotry is wrong since all your standards are then subjective and up to an individual to decide what form of racism, religious discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination is justified or not since not everyone will live their lives according to Dajo's book of values. In that case, no bigotry is wrong, since every bigot will believe they have justifiable reason to be a bigot (while being careful not to anger their tribal lords).

By the way, were you then offended by the earlier post by another poster that Mormonism isn't Christianity? Or do Mormons have more power than Catholics and, therefore, they can be subject to bigotry unlike Catholics?

Essentially, the argument here is over whose version of the fairytale is the "right" fairytale.

Really no different than arguing over how many little pigs there really are, and with what specifically, and in which order, did they construct their homes ?

Historically, it has gone both ways. Go to Ireland or Italy and say you are a protestant, and most will say you are not a Christian.

It is not a question of whether Catholics or Protestants or Mormons are or are not Christian. It's all semantic. But there are fundamental differences among the three that to say they are all the same is like saying all Asians are the same, ignoring the strong ethnic differences among Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Thai, etc.

Well, Mormons aren't Christian. I think all Christians agree on that.

The only ones who would say they are would be the Mormons themselves.

Mormons do state they are Christians. Why is it OK to say they are not when Catholics deify humans and have an open canon? Mormons like Catholics are unequivocal in their statements that they are Christians. You may disagree, but they probably think you are showing bigotry by saying they are not Christians.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/christians?lang=eng

The Mormon Church was founded by Joseph Smith and bases a big part of its religion on the Book of Mormon, which Joseph Smith himself wrote. There are other writings, too, such as Pearl of Great Price which are not accepted by any other denominations.

It's not just that a book is considered canon here or there. Christian denominations differ as to what is canon and what is not. No one other than Mormons considers those books to be anything other than complete and total fiction written by Smith and there is no historical record to back them up. They are a fabrication. Even for those who say that the Bible has a lot of fairy tales in it at least some of the people and places described in it did exist and there are independent sources that can confirm this.

There is absolutely nothing in the Book of Mormon that can be independently verified and some things that we know are out and out lies (such as the presence of horses). It claims that Jesus was known to the people in the New World before he was even born. There is no evidence of that and it doesn't even make any sense.

There are other major, major differences but I think that believing Joseph Smith was a prophet, that Jesus visited the Americas, and Joseph Smith translated some gold plates into a book that is just as important as the Bible says it all.

Just because it steals elements from Christianity doesn't make it Christian. No Christian scholars would consider it Christian. Same for Christian Science.

I am a disciple of Pastafarianism. And it has been pasta-tively amazing since I converted. The one true religion, who worship the one true god, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, our one true savior, who makes all pasta-bilities possible. All other religions are pre-pasta-rous.

All you heathens will burn in shell (Conchiglie for all you unenlightened ones).

Poor Adam.
He wound up taking the fall for Eve and is blamed for the fall of humanity.
Such a tough break.

This reminds me of the people talking about when the fast and furious movies abandoned reality. I'm not sure snake vocal chords is the most insurmountable real world challenge in the bible.

Trump is so LOYAL that he threw Kayleigh "Milktoast" McEnany under the Bus the other day.

He claimed that his former press secretary misreported his poll numbers during a recent Fox News broadcast.

"The RINOS & Globalists can have her. FoxNews should only use REAL Stars!!!" Trump said, drawing criticism from conservatives who have normally been sympathetic to the uber-aggressive former president.

Trump also referred to his former spokeswoman as "Kayleigh 'Milktoast' McEnany," though the term is spelled "milquetoast."

Hate commenting on appearances but someone has to be trying hard to do that type of clown act on the lipstick. Was there no producer who looked at that and said maybe tone down the hipstick on the chin?

So hard to take these MAGA clowns seriously.

And Gavin Newsom should be disqualified immediately for having such bad judgment. It isn't as if people change at that age, so that is the kind of person he thought was his life partner.

I sort of understand what he is saying, though.

I know more than a few people of all ages who recently (within the last year) quit their jobs and stopped working. Some of them retired early but some of them are quite young and just want to travel or start their own business from home or things like that. They won't be counted as unemployed but they are out of the workforce "prematurely" as they are not of retirement age (62) yet.

However, I don't really see that as a problem and counting them as part of the unemployment statistics isn't the right thing to do unless you think that they are going to want to re-enter the workforce soon. For some of these young people in particular I think they will have no choice eventually but let's count them when that actually happens.
