55 Things You Need to Know About Ron DeSantis - POLITICO

How would you like to be a writer and get assigned to write "55 Things You Need to Know About Ron DeSantis" and you go to your editor and say that's a typo, right? There's only supposed to be one "5", isn't there? And your editor says, no, 55, so you'd better get going. And you get $10 for every "thing", so count your lucky stars.

The next week, you google "coding boot camps near me".
Reporter: Sir, I quit. I'm going to code the next great social media platform.

Boss: <scowls> Get your azz back to finding those 55 things, numbnutz.

Reporter: Quits, completes coding boot camp and gets a job and tries but fails to "Hello World".
This just in: Republicans find another whistleblower who claims Hillary's emails were proven to be on Hunter's laptop while Obama spied on tRump as he sat (shat?) upon his golden toilet. Gym Jordan afraid whistle blower may be in danger of abduction by aliens in cahoots with Democrats.

Don't call him stupid because he is smarter than anyone here calling him stupid.

He just sucks as a politician and may have ego / personality issues.

No, people here are not smarter than DeSantis. Otherwise, they would have done better in school and accomplished more. They may be smarter but only in their dreams.

I am not ashamed to say there are people smarter than me, including DeSantis, Obama, both Clintons, and all of the Supreme Court justices.

Yale and Harvard seem pretty easy, though, given that Dubya Bush is a grad of both.

OK, you seem like Trump. Full of delusion and unearned and unproven sense of superiority.

It's like someone from Cal State saying UC Berkeley is easy because their classes were hard and someone they don't respect graduated from UC Berkeley.

I graduated from UC Berkeley. The argument that the classes were hard is not really based on reality. It wasn't that difficult to get As. If it weren't for some hardcore classes in the college of chemistry before I changed my major to rhetoric and college to letters and science, I would have received straight As without that much difficulty. Harvard was not impossible but it was not easy. They just took better care of my initial career and do a better job of keeping me engaged and involved.

And unlike George W. Bush, DeSantis didn't have legacy or wealth.

But you keep thinking you posting on BI makes you a genius over someone who graduated near top of his class from both Yale and Harvard coming from middle class and who is now a governor without prior connections.

That makes sense.

So, I will speak for myself. I think he is smarter than me, and you definitely do not seem smarter than me.

Failure to see context.

Trump got his start from his wealthy father, and he has always been a bit of a genius on marketing.

DeSantis came from most likely humbler beginnings than you.

But you seem smart by not thinking within context of the situation and making blanket comparisons.

And if you are not basing things on facts, such as accomplishments, what are you basing it on? Gut feeling? Delusions on your intelligence?

I don't think DeSantis is dumb or a bad politician. He clearly knew what he was doing to win an election that big in a large, tough state like Florida. (Yes, some of that is down to his Democratic opposition being awful -- much like the Dems in California who get to go up against whoever the local GOP pukes up -- but he must have some smarts and skill to do that.)

It all just isn't translating to a national race. It seems like his team has just chosen a terrible strategy and failed to adjust it at all. We Pac-12 fans should understand that.

Some would say posting on BI off topics to mock someone famous who is more accomplished just for self affirmation is a sign of a stable genius as well.

This would not be something he would actually do, but drone strikes in our ally's territory had been conducted by Obama and Clinton as well. We also had sent military to Panama during the first Bush administration based on war on drugs. This would be a foreign policy disaster but I wonder how much you thought about this instead of just reacting snidely. But you are smarter than DeSantis so you probably did.

I suspect all the social and moral warriors here who pretend to care about gender and LGBTQ+ will find no issue with this troll's use of that toxic word or using gender as an insult. Not when the hollowness of all this is betrayed by a member of the tribe. Let's call all this what it is. None of you actually believe any of this. It's like a sport, rooting for one team or another. Imagine if someone on the right posted exactly this (which they don't). Imagine all of the moral outrage. Respectfully, dimitrig and you both made way too sweeping claims in saying -- respectively -- "I think there are a lot of people here smarter than (DeSantis) is - perhaps everyone" and "No, people here are not smarter than DeSantis. Otherwise, they would have done better in school and accomplished more."

Obviously, it's not true that "perhaps everyone" on Bear Insider "is smarter than DeSantis." Nor is it true that (presumably none of the) "people here are ... smarter than DeSantis.

I hope my points don't misinterpret your positions, but let me know if so ....

First, what does it mean to be "more accomplished" ? Some people think "accomplishment" is measured my income or wealth. By this metric, a lot of popular social media content creators are more "accomplished" than Ron DeSantis, even though many never graduated High School and came from far more "disadvantaged" backgrounds.

Second, what does it mean to be "smarter" ? DeSantis majored in History at Yale before getting his law degree at Harvard. He went on to be elected Governor of Florida.

Great! That's definitely a resume, but does that make him automatically "smarter than" Cal Boalt (or "Berkeley Law") grads with respect to law or Cal History majors with respect to History? Nope! Does that make him "smarter than" the Cal STEM grads here with respect to science, technology, engineering and Math?

The last point is what I think dimitrig was hinting at: just because you got a History degree from Yale and a Law degree from Harvard doesn't mean you could survive through to a Cal STEM degree, regardless of how elite Yale and Harvard certainly are.

So while DeSantis has a list of impressive accomplishments, it is pretty subjective to suggest he has accomplished more than the Cal grads on this board (or even -- by some measures -- many internet content creators who never went to college.)

It is a lot more objectively certain that many Cal grads are "smarter than" DeSantis in History and Law. With respect to our STEM majors, I would say most -- including me! -- are likely "smarter than" DeSantis in our respective majors.

Fair points and more nuanced view than either of the prior general hyperboles and generalization, including mine.

I definitely don't mean wealth. DeSantis does not have a lot. I definitely have more. But I still think he accomplished more than I did. I went the easier route of law firm, management and hedge fund. It's tougher to go to military, Congress and Governor. That's what I meant. Being Governor is a bigger accomplishment than most have realized here.

If we check our ego, getting into Yale is a bit harder than getting into UC Berkeley. Same with Berkeley Law vs Harvard Law. And then to graduate summa cum laude and cum laude? Sorry if others here did better. I definitely was not cum laude at Harvard.

Maybe he could or may he could not have succeeded in science classes. That is theoretical. But if there is one thing that DeSantis is known for is the ability to read, analyze and process great deal of information quickly and narrow down core issues. Folks posting on a message board challenging the intelligence of someone like that is laughable and misses the mark. He has a lot more open targets we can hit.

Now, if you've read more than a few of my posts, you'll know I think DeSantis' politics are a non-starter. Embracing the "Anti-Woke" social agenda of his advisor Chris Rufo was a terrible decision, and in itself disqualifies him as a potential national leader.

Common sense values. That would be great. I may not vote for Trump or DeSantis but I will no longer vote for any candidates that cater to the progressive side either. Including local. Wish this country could vote for candidates like Sununu but primaries will ensure we only get dregs like Trump and Biden. Days of rationalizing voting for dregs like Biden is over. Will continue to shun Trumpists but fake liberals are just as bad.

I think you need to learn to understand the words in context. For example, consider the following:

A may not be true but B is also not true.

In case you don't know, the concession and admission in the first clause in these types of argument does not mean the admission in the first clause is in doubt or conditional. It means that the admission in the first clause does not negate the second. Just trying to be helpful because you seem confused.

Yep. I'm sure I'm more moderate than most Republican leaning voters but our times seem to scream for a candidate that just preaches common sense values. Instead we are getting outlandish name calling grandstanding. I won't vote for Trump or DeSantis.
Vivek.
Let me pose a question perhaps relevant to you both:

Neither of you want to vote for Trump or Biden, but what if these are the Presidential candidates ultimately nominated by the 2 major parties? With respect to the 2024 election, will you:

a) hold your nose and vote for "the lesser of 2 evils" (if so, whom)?;
b) vote 3rd party or write-in some other candidate?; or
c) simply not vote in the Presidential election?

Whatever your respective answers -- regarding a), b) or c) -- please elaborate.

As I wrote earlier, I would not vote. I voted for Biden just like I voted for Hillary because I cannot bring myself to vote for someone like Trump despite my conservative leanings. I will not vote for Biden again who is too dishonest, too catering to the progressives and too old (ego gets in the way of him stepping aside). So, I will rather not participate than partake in a process where they offer only different forms of sh@t sandwich for me to eat.

Now my turn to ask you a question.

A liberal troll posted an insult (all he does exclusively) using a truly despicable term that demeans women while also using gender identity as an insult.

Assume you are against the attack of LGBTQ by DeSantis out of principle and not just based o. tribalism. What prompts you and other liberals here to excuse posts from that troll when it seems to betray how strongly you truly hold on to your stated principles? I suspect if a right wing poster wrote something here using the same words, there would have been a more violent response. How much of what liberals write here is based on tribalism vs actual principle? Liberal posters here seem to excuse or cheer behavior that betrays stated principles when committed by someone claiming to be liberal. How should we take that?

I don't want to dwell on this DeSantis thing but I will say :

1. He was a very good baseball player. I suspect that played into his admission to Yale. Maybe not, but it is worth acknowledging as a possibility.

2. In a more general sense there are a lot of people at Yale that aren't all that smart. Do not put too much stock into where someone went to school. I met a young woman yesterday who went to Florida Tech and she is doing amazing research that is coveted by both the DoD and commercial companies. I did ask her how she ended up at such an unknown school. She said that she wanted to go to MIT or Stanford but that at the time she was working for Delta Airlines and Florida Tech was one of the schools that Delta would reimburse tuition for and so she ended up there. She said she has no regrets as her decision worked out very well for her. The field I work in is full of very brilliant engineers and scientists and most of them did not go to Ivy League schools. So what?

3. I have yet to read or hear of something DeSantis has done which is anything but stupid. You may say the same about me, but I am bull****ting on a sports board. This guy is the governor. If he constantly does and says dumb things as part of his job as governor then maybe he just isn't that smart.

By the way, at Cal I took Astronomy. Chemistry, Upper Div Math, Upper Div Physics, upper Div CS and my electives were classes like Philosophy, Economics, Classics, and Anthropology. I never got lower than an A in any non-STEM course and that was with me not devoting much time to it because I was being killed with workload for my other courses. I probably could be an Archaeologist right now as my professor and TAs were really pushing me to go that route and I did well. Would I be smarter if I was an archaeology professor at Harvard or Cambridge or would that have just been a career choice?

I am not going to be one of those people that says people in STEM are smarter than anyone else, because I certainly could not have passed my roommates Spanish and French literature courses that required the essays to be written in the foreign language. We all have unique skills and abilities. Intelligence is hard to quantify.

One of the smartest guys I know is a peon engineer who went to Caltech. He still lives in the same 1 bedroom apartment and drives the same old car he always did. He never advanced in his career. Once he got recruited to be a quant on Wall Street. He doubled his salary but quit within 2 years because he didn't like it, didn't like the people, didn't like New York. He is back to his old job. I guarantee you he is smarter than you, me, and DeSantis but other than his Caltech degree there is nothing that would indicate that. Give him a math problem to solve, though.

I think two things will clarify the things you wrote to minimize his experience at Yale and Harvard. Summa cum laude and cum laude. He graduated with exceptionally high grades. So, despite being on the baseball team and working as an electrician in college, he graduated near the top of his class.

Again, he is a bad politician who ran to the right of Trump. That was a dumb move but it does you no good for your arguments and it does not make you seem any less tribal to minimize his academic achievements.

I was in college of chemistry for two years. I admit that the only grades less than an A I received were in organic chemistry and physical chemistry. So I agree that humanities were much easier. But let's not assume you would have gotten into Yale and that you would have graduated summa cum laude.

About solving math problems - I believe he got perfect score on the math portion of the SAT. So maybe he didn't take advance math classes but he probably had the mental capacity to do well.

If you want to make yourself feel better by convincing yourself that you are smarter, won't stop you. But it's stupid to say he is stupid. Trump maybe. But not DeSantis.

If he is so smart why does he do and say so many dumb things? Did he take a lot of drugs? Have a stroke? He doesn't act like a smart person. Perhaps he once was smart but he now has diminished capacity.

What can you point to that makes you think he is so smart other than some grades he got 20 years ago at a school which is known for grade inflation? The mean GPA at Yale and Harvard is 3.7.
