Black Americans tragically turned our focus from rights and laws to identity politics and victimization.

By Shelby Steele

If simple logic were the only measure of truth in matters of race, reparations for black Americans would make perfect sense. We have endured four centuries of an especially mean and degrading persecution. Slavery, and the regime of segregation that followed it, was dawn-to-dusk, cradle-to-grave oppression. The only argument against reparations would be that no contemporary offer of reparation could ever be sufficient compensation.
But since the 1960s, we blacks have been all but overwhelmed with social programs and policies that seek to reparate us. Didn't the 1964 Civil Rights Act launch an era of reparation in America?

And didn't that era continue with President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty, two sweeping excursions into social engineering that he hoped would "end poverty in our time"? Then there was school busing for integration, free public housing, racial preferences in college admissions, affirmative action in employment, increasingly generous welfare payments and so on.
More recently, in American institutions of every kind, there has emerged a new woke language of big-hat-no-cattle words like "equity," "inclusion," "intersectionality," "triggers," "affinity spaces," "allies" and of course the all-purpose "diversity," today both a mandate and a brand. America has had some 60 years of what might be called reparational social reformreform meant to uplift not only the poor, but especially those, like black Americans, whose poverty meets the bar of historical grievance.

Today we can see what we couldn't in the '60s: that this vast array of government programs has failed to lift black Americans to anything like parity with whites. By almost every important measureeducational achievement, out-of-wedlock births, homeownership, divorce ratesblacks are on the losing end of racial disparities. The reparational model of reform, in which governments and institutions try to uplift the formerly oppressed, has failed.

But why such immense failure in a post-'60s America that has only grown more repentant of its racist past? The answer, I think, is that the Great Society was profoundly disingenuous. It was a collection of reparational reforms meant to show an America finally delivered from the tarnish of its long indulgence in racism. The Great Society was a gigantic virtue signal. It was moral advertising when the times called for the hard work of adapting a long-oppressed people to the demands of the modern world.

But an even greater barrier to black development turned out to be freedom itself. In the mid-'60s, when the civil-rights movement and Martin Luther King were staples on the evening news, we black Americans stepped into a vastly greater freedom than anything we had ever known. King's rhetoric"Great God Almighty, we're free at last"portrayed freedom as heaven. But freedom also had to have been scary. Oppression had conditioned us to suppress our humanity, to settle ourselves into a permanent subjugation. Not the best preparation for a full life in freedom.

I believe it was this collision with freedomits intimidating burden of responsibility, its terror of the unknown, its risk of humiliationthat pressured black Americans, especially the young, into a terrible mistake.

In segregation we had longed for a freedom grounded in democratic principles. In the '60s we won that point. But then suddenly, with the ink still wet on the Civil Rights Act, a new voice of protest exploded onto the scene, a voice of race and color and atavistic longing: "black power."

To accommodate, we shifted the overriding focus of racial protest in America from rights and laws to identity. Today racial preferences are used everywhere in American life. Identity is celebrated almost as profusely as freedom once was.

It all follows a simple formula: Add a history of victimization to the identity of any group, and you will have created entitlement. Today's black identity is a victim-focused identity designed to entitle blacks in American life. By the terms of this identity, we blacks might be called "citizen-victims" or "citizens with privileges."

The obvious problem with this is that it baits us into a life of chasing down privileges like affirmative action. In broader America, this only makes us sufferers for want of privileges. Reparation can never be more than a dream of privilege.

Both the conservatives and liberals have failed the black community because it was never about genuine care apart from the self. Politics is a vanity projection with alleged beliefs only reflecting one's vision of how they want to be viewed externally. That is why people lack actual principles but will change their views depending on twitter trends, while demonstrating bigotry if acceptable and pivoting as soon as winds blow differently.

For conservatives, it is always about cutting costs and protecting selfish interest, deluding themselves that their starting position on third base means that they hit a triple. Instead of investing to make it easier for folks who are at bat to become better players, they think status quo should be maintained while calling it equity. They fail to realize that investment now on the education and enablement of society as a whole, including those at bat, will increase the quality of life for everyone. While criminal law policies also play an important role, people are more willing to commit crimes when they have less to lose.

For liberals, it is virtue signaling, thinking that lowering the standards and allowing a victim mentality means they care and understand. That never works with inspiring employees, teammates, young adults, etc. You lower standards, and people will only live up to those lower standards. But their virtue signaling beliefs never reflect on their own life choices. You see that here. You see someone who claims evil of capital vs. labor while proclaiming investments in equity as if he himself is not part of capital. Actual belief will lead to investment decisions. You have people who promote policies that make the inner cities less safe, homelessness more prevalent, drug abuse condoned, while then moving to the safety of suburbs for their family while allowing the poor who cannot move out live with the results of their failed policies. You see that in them calling racist any leader who calls for the importance of fatherhood in families when studies after studies shows lower criminal rate, higher income level, and higher education level of children of families with a father and a mother.

What works at place of employment, teams, families work with society because human nature trumps delusions bred from virtue signaling. Set high expectations, eliminate victim mentality but instead increase confidence, provide the tools and resources to meet the high standards with personal accountability maintained, and eliminate blame mentality as if one's life will improve as long as they find someone to blame as opposed to finding their strength to rise above their situation.

Republicans need to stop looking at government programs that enable future contributions through elimination of child hunger, provision of after school programs, and assistance to third-party organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs as anything less than critical investments we need to make now. For Democrats, unless they are willing to live in the inner cities themselves, forgo their equity investments and pensions (pensions are the worst in demanding short-term profit focus from companies through their heavy reliance on activists and hedge funds), and allow lower cost housing in their neighborhood, they need to stop thinking destructive policies that they would never adopt in their families or workplace to pollute the minority population (and as the mayor of SF stated, stop thinking some white privileged person is some savior for persons of color), including victimhood mentality, no accountability, deterioration of the family unit, and lower expectations.

My personal take, but it seems like the existing policies of the left and the right have not improved the situation, and all we get are more of the same failed policies from both sides, with each patting themselves on their backs while leaving a trail of misery for the poor and the minorities.

TL;DR version - nobody actually cares about solving the problems. They just want you to think that they're good people.
Not a bad summary.

Do you know him? Hopefully you don't presume to prejudge someone so easily and reduce a human being to your easy-to-process biased conclusions and dehumanization of all his experiences that made him who he is.

Some people wake up every day of their life playing the VICTIM.
What a sad way to go through life.

Steele believes that the use of victimization is the greatest hindrance for black Americans. In his view, white Americans see blacks as victims to ease their guilty conscience, and blacks attempt to turn their status as victims into a kind of currency that will purchase nothing of real or lasting value. Therefore, he claims, blacks must stop "buying into this zero-sum game" by adopting a "culture of excellence and achievement" without relying on "set-asides and entitlements"

Cool story bro.

I'm 4th generation CALIFORNIAN on my Mom's side and her family was never involved in slavery.
My Dad's parents came from Germany.

Good luck with your narrative.
It has nothing to do with me or my family.

Why are you here pleading for pity from folks here whom you say have no capacity to understand?

So hard to understand why you keep mingling with folks here whom you believe are unalterably corrupt and racist because of the color of our skin? You clearly don't believe what you say about us if you are here nonstop.

OK, we feel bad for you. You are a victim. You have our pity. Good?

Most liberals here will write what you want to read because all this is theatrics. Who here do you think has really changed their hearts or minds based on your blanket race-based hatred or your TikTok posting?

Otherwise, even you must be tired of your message on repeat without any analysis.

But no one on the left will call you out because they have been shamed and emasculated enough to fear making any independent determination of right and wrong and calling you out for your divisive and racially hateful posts.

Unlike you, I actually don't care about the color of a person's skin. And I can only control myself. I care about a person's character and humanity, and the hopes and dreams every one of us have like everyone else. And I care that people can feel loved (but not entitled or deemed sacred) for who they are and not by who they choose to love or what color their skin is.

Reparations in the form of help for the black community, businesses, schools, etc., I can see potentially being effective.

Direct payments to the descendants of slaves? If we could have done that during Reconstruction, immediately following the war, then sure. Doing it now seems logistically impossible. There are plenty of white people in this country who are descended from slaves and black people who aren't. How do you figure out who gets what?
