The navy man whose job was to hear explosions also has the job of reporting such explosions. At some point, that reporting would go up the chain of command to someone who actually analyzes the data such that action would be taken. That person should be informed enough to know there is a missing sub in those waters that also happens to be the #1 national news story. When two and two are put together, because of the gravity of the story, the highest level of navy command would be made aware. Your version of events is not plausible, but you certainly are funny.
