Leaving Minot's dehumanizing language aside, I think a lot of folks saw this coming for the US team. They are caught in between an aging generation still holding on (Morgan, Rapinoe) and a younger generation not yet ready to lead. They never looked like they were fully in sync.

According to Carly Lloyd, they were not in sync in the locker room either, probably a factor.

Morgan is 34, kind of old, but not too much in the women's game where skills and technique are more important especially for a poacher. Rapinoe at 38, for a midfielder, might have been too old already. The thing is though, the US has huge depth in term of the sheer size of the number of players, it shouldn't be too hard to platoon and blend the veterans with the younger talent.

I disagree with Rapinoe's anti-USA sentiment but still believe she had a solid role on this team or at least should have made a good impact. While Rapinoe has lost a step, at least she is a true left striker. Sophia Smith, Lynn Thomas, and Morgan are all center strikers. Smith couldn't do a cross for her life. She also seemed to struggle controlling the ball on the sidelines without losing it. Rapinoe's calling card is free kicks, crosses, and corners. It is a shame she choked in the pk when it mattered. Smith looked a lot better at center striker in those last 40 minutes. She was a poor left striker in all facets but finishing, which only happened against lowly Vietnam. Horan and Morgan had excellent second half strikes but the Swedish goalie came up big.

They did that before and it was really bad because everyone tried to bait ref for PKs and ref wouldn't call it. Or would and game was instantly over, which felt unsatisfactory.

But that was before the successful advent of VAR, so maybe it would be better.
