I've watched Hedges before, and am listening again to this talk from two years ago

https://www.youtube.com/live/69pEzsfX8Aw

He's extremely critical and dour and revolutionary. Maybe it's because he covered so many revolutions as a journalist. I think he said it's the eventual way out of the failing system he sees in the US now.

Hedges recorded that talk in March, 2021 -- just a few weeks after the Jan 6 debacle. Given the situation, I think that "critical and dour" were, and are, entirely appropriate. I also believe that Hedges has been proven more correct by the day since then.

Hedges cites Samuel P. Huntington when he talks about the "excess of democracy," but Huntington was far from alone. In the mid 1970s, conservatives were convinced that giving rights to minorities and women was a dangerous thing, and that allowing a bunch of college kids to end a futile (and stupid) war thousands of miles away was even more dangerous. So U.S. business elites went about the business of trimming back this "excess of democracy" by reducing the political power of U.S. Worker/Customers.

In 1975, the year that Huntington published "The Crisis of Democracy," the U.S. pulled its troops out of Vietnam, and the political and economic power of U.S. Worker/Customers reached its peak. Since the early/mid 1970s, the U.S. business elites set a course to wrest political power from U.S. Worker/Customers by taking a larger share of their economic output for themselves. This trend has continued, and increased, to today. This graph says it all:

But if you're truly interested in "how we got here," I think you'll find that Thom Hartmann is less dour, more analytical, and more extensively researched. Hartmann traces the "excess of democracy" concept back to the conservative Russell Kirk back in the early 1950s. Here's a brief article:

Why Oligarchs Don't Just Want to Be Rich, But Kill Democracy Too

Thom Hartmann has written many books; if you want to understand "how we got here," check out his Hidden History series, or go straight into his The Hidden History of NeoLiberalism.

Most of the damage is now done, though. 2/3 of Americans, and 80% of Democrats, support a cease-fire in Gaza; unfortunately, in the halls of Congress, full & unwavering support for genocide and ethnic cleansing is the norm, and calling for an end to genocide is cause for termination.

Small-d democracy in the U.S. is already gone. We're just in the process of choosing who's going to finish it off.

Here's what I think about Reagan's policy towards immigrants:

In 2023, Republicans want to round up illegal immigrants (including Dreamers) and put them into massive camps and our descent into a fascist hellhole continues.

Of course, they don't want to put ALL undocumented workers in camps. They want only a small percentage in the camps -- so that the 95% not in the camps will keep working, keep their heads down, stay invisible, and not report the abuse, wage theft, and exploitation of their employers.

Additionally, they want to send Federal troops into places like California and New York to terrorize the local population.

In the early years of Trump, I was horrified, but thought if he were to suddenly die, things would go back to normal.

But now I think the Deplorables movement is vast - wide and deep. I think it's hot legs and there's a decent chance we are in for it for decades.
I am entirely uninspired by the idiot MAGAs who post here, the voter polls, and are elected officials on Capitol Hill who look truth in the face and say "alternative facts". It's like "WOW!" I simply can't believe what I'm seeing, hearing and reading. Shocking!

* Is it race based?
Obama's election as the first non-white seems to be a foundation here. The most obvious thing is Birtherism, but it's beyond that lie.

* Is it Conservative Christians and the taking over the Supreme Court?
Victory at all costs, despite the utter hypocrisy. Well done Mitch McConnell and those secret financial backers.

* Is it the new brazen nature of media?
Foxnews used to be much more tame. Now it's just a salacious entertainment show of outrage and misinformation. Viewers like! We are entertaining ourselves to death. Rush Limbaugh showed everyone else how to behave, and now Fox has competition with OAN and Newsmax on they're right. Journalistic decency and accuracy are a thing of the past.

* Is it the economy, stupid?
Hardly, the economy has been doing just fine, despite the '08 mortgage meltdown and Covid shutdown. See:
-moderate interest rates/inflation.
-near full employment.
-stock market.
-ever improving worker productivity.

* is it the Cult of Personality: Trump?
Again, I've decided he's less of a factor than I previously thought.

Certainly, there must be a book that explains all of it.
Anyone?
Poor education, media propaganda, lead, many stupid people among us.

This is an interesting discussion, but I'm wondering if we could go back a bit and maybe concordtom could explain how he believes "hot legs" have contributed to the rise of Deplorables. Visual evidence appreciated but optional. Thanks!

It just donned on me, Eastman, Giuliani and Trump whipped up the crowd on Jan 6 to get the election turned around - with the help of Pence and house republicans - so that Trump and Pence would stay in power.

But they marched chatting "Hang Mike Pence".

Isn't it nuts that they wanted to violently overturn an election that would have Pence remain #2 in the line of presidency at the same time that they sought to have him hanged?

These people make no sense. They are simply anarchists.

Yep.

But remember what happened during the Trump years, when undocumented workers were afraid to come to the U.S. -- the farmers, meat packing plants, and home builders complained that they didn't have anyone to show up & do the work.

That's not likely to happen again. Employers will continue to invite, encourage, and reward ALL immigrants, legal and otherwise, to show up & work, and offer protection for those who do, even if it enrages Trump.

This is pre-election posturing for Trump followers.

Remember that as Biden & the Dems continue their collapse in popularity, Trump will also going be courting U.S. corporate donors. The more likely it looks that Trump will win, the more Trump will be shaking corporate donors down for the $$$ he needs.

Any employer who wants to keep their undocumented workers working will have to pay Trump for protection -- just like any small business in a town ruled by gangsters. IF Trump wins, he'll be the richest man on the planet before long.

Trump's idol for governance is Vladimir Putin. There's a reason why Putin is one of the world's richest men, and why he is the ultimate authority in Russia. The oligarchs and CEOs answer to him. He doesn't answer to them.

Unless somebody "eliminates" him first!

(And by "eliminate" I mean eliminate in the Representative Goldman manner, not in the mafia eliminate manner.)
