This all looks to me like the TikTok parent company (ByteDance) is pulling a stunt with its service to essentially threaten American consumers and businesses ("Nice apps you have there, be a shame if something happened to 'em!") . . . which ironically pretty much makes the argument for why they should be banned.

Exactly. And they didn't ban TikTok. They just required that it not be owned by a hostile foreign country. TikTok chose to close shop (or is threatening to do so) precisely because China doesn't want to lose it intelligence spyware.

The is a ton of precedent for this. The US regulates ownership of newspapers, tv and radio stations, and key industries. We have CFIUS. If TikTok were owned by US nationals and China wanted to purchase it, there absolutely would be scrutiny.

If nothing else, China should not be allowed to own TikTok solely on the basis that a US company could not own/operate a company like TikTok in China. Why does the US agree to this?

And regarding Trump's post, if he's suggesting a governmental agency should own half of tiktok, that is a terrible idea. That would implicate the first amendment among many other concerns.

Again, this is entirely false, because I was able to find plenty of Israel-critical content on YouTube (for example) long before TikTok ever existed, and still can. TikTok is not essential here.

That said, I would not be surprised if TikTok was deliberately boosting Gaza content over the last year, because they know it is a wedge issue to divide the American left and they would prefer that Trump get back into power (because he'd be friendlier to them and/or more easily manipulated).
