Seeing that the original thread is overloaded with videos and basically non functioning, I thought I would keep this opportunity to share music, both new and old, going.

*I saw Roy when I was 18 at a concert called the Guitar Explosion at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1973. Roy was found hung in a jail cell in Virginia in 1988 after an arrest for drunkenness. Official COD was suicide. Family claimed he was murdered.

Quote:

...the orchestration proved too much for the then-current edition of the band (except for vocalist Dick Whetstone), so Axelrod brought in The Wrecking Crew in the persons of guitarists Howard Roberts and Lou Morrell, bassist Carol Kaye, keyboardist Don Randi, and drummer Earl Palmer. Armed with that formidable line-up, Axelrod brought his trademark blend of psychedelic rock, jazzy orchestration and avant-garde touches to full fruition, creating an album that sounds fresh and cutting-edge over 50 years later.

Earl Palmer.

Perhaps the best album to ever come out from UCLA, and I am including all the Doors albums.

Sarah Vaughan was otherworldly. I never saw her perform.

My parents hauled me at age 13 to see Sammy Davis, Jr. at the Oakland Arena. I was into Rock and didn't want to go. The man was a Category 4 Hurricane of talent. He sang, danced, did impressions and comedy and he did them all A+. In the vernacular of the time: He Blew My Mind!

No, Sir, I did not…but I saw Louis Armstrong in 1964 when I was 10 at the Berkeley Community Theater. I assume he was touring riding the wave of his hit single, Hello Dolly!

This true story is better suited for the "Your Brush with Fame?" thread, but since it doesn't exist yet, I'll put it here:

Short version: Three other 14 yr olds and I were hitch-hiking in Tahoe. Rolls Royce pulls up, Sammy Davis Jr driving! He gives us a ride!!!

Details: Only in the '70s. Sammy was playing at Harrah's in the summer. He would take the same route at the same time in the same gold Rolls every evening from where he was staying (Nevada side) to do his show. The people camping at Zephyr Cove had begun to stop his car and ask for autographs. He would oblige for 5 minutes or so...

We had the great idea to stop his car 50 yards ahead of the throng and see if he would give us a ride. Four of us, blocking the road, waving at him. He had to stop. His manager is in the passenger seat. "Hi Sammy, can you give us a ride to Harrah's? Please?" He looks at us, shakes his head and says, "Get in." We crowd into the back seat... then he stops again for the crowd getting autographs, many of whom we know. They are looking at us in the car, amazed.

About a half a mile before Stateline, Sammy's manager explains to him that he probably doesn't want to arrive to his show with four 14 yr old boys in his back seat, so he pulls over and tells us, really nicely, that that's as far as he can take us; we'll have to walk the rest of the way. We ask for his autograph, but we don't have any paper. His manager pulls out an envelope and tears it into four pieces. He signs each one and takes off for his show.

Pretty cool guy, he was.

That is an A+ story! Do you still have his autograph?

^ No, unfortunately. I used to have this combination safe (kids model), which I kept on my dresser. Smaller than a gallon of milk and not super-heavy. Inside was that autograph, some old coins I had been collecting and a few other things, who knows what. (Not most of my baseball cards, though!) One afternoon, when I was a senior in high school, some bad guys came into our house (most people didn't even lock their doors back then, we didn't) and took the whole safe, along with anything else they could grab. Fortunately, we didn't have much of value.
