I would agree that there is probably a different experience being descended from slaves, as opposed to more recent African immigrants. Though I'm also not sure where Jamaicans or other Caribbean blacks would enter into that. They weren't slaves in the US, but most were descended from slaves. Kamala Harris' father was Jamaican.

And I suspect most Black Americans would still say those folks all count as "black."
