The context at that time was that several GOP candidates were jockeying for Sheldon Adelson's $100M+ endorsement, and bombing Iran for Israel was his pet issue. Adelson found more common ground with Trump as a fellow casino operator, and through Kushner, who was already a close friend of Netanyahu, as was Adelson.

Trump also cultivated an anti-neocon/anti-establishment populist following. His political career was launched in earnest by his slaying of then frontrunner Jeb in the first debate by lambasting Dubya's Forever War. In that sense he was very two-faced, as these two constituencies are mutually exclusive. In his second mandate, he went all in for the money, and perhaps he was also coerced.
