Why would it ? A honest question? I wasn't being disingenuous. This question came from a genuine place if trying to learn and get a better understanding.

Yeah I see too much disagreement no actual discussion. The infighting is so unproductive. One of the reasons I am independent sometimes I'm conservative sometimes I'm progressive it varies from issue to issue.

I think my first class at Cal was Political Science 1, or 100, or whatever it was called. Intro to Poli Sci and Judith Gruber was the lecturer. And in her first class, she discussed the competing values of liberty versus equality. Extreme liberty results in more inequality. Extreme equality results less liberty.
In the US, I think this is a fair way to think about things, albeit simplistic. We live in a largely free society, so its a question of degrees, not extremes. Or at least it has been until recently.
Conservatives tend to place greater weight on liberty interests, both in terms of capitalism and in the sense of smaller government. Liberals tend to place greater emphasis on equality, often through government imposed laws and taxation.
Just to be clear, I think most liberals and conservatives in the US value both - excluding the far left and far right. So for most people it just comes down to how the two are weighed.
I come down on the liberty side of the equation which is why I'm fairly characterized as libertarian or conservative (somewhere in the middle). Sometimes that means I have classical "liberal" positions - such as when it comes to speech or governmental rules on abortion. And inequality does concern me, more now than it did 37 years ago when I was in Gruber's class. The world has changed in that regard and it would be foolish to deny that - Trump is manifestation of that reality.

America would have been far stronger if we didn't waste $8 trillion on Endless War.
Consider this data point - China spent more on its high-speed rail infrastructure in the early 2010s than on its entire military budget.
Here's the reason this is happening: we can see that the regimes in China and Russia are fundamentally authoritarian and illiberal, and that Russia especially has already proven themselves a military aggressor (China is making aggressive noises but hasn't actually done anything yet, though they certainly are aggressive about economic control). Opposing that kind of ideology makes perfect sense.Cal88 said:

No real progressive goals can be accomplished under authoritarian rule.
I am not an issues guy, per se. Generally, I think about things like federalism, state's rights, size of government, "proper" interpretation of the Constitution, liberty vs equality, etc. Overarching philosophies are fine but we should not follow them dogmatically. My views evolve and are even sometimes inconsistent - political philosophies and personal views of morality, justice and right/wrong do not always align.

If you've done reasonably well (for whatever reasons) you want more liberty, less government. If you are sort of in the dumpster you want help ie. more government. If you've done ridiculously well (for whatever reasons) you want to 'give back' , ie. more government. That's my 8th grade term paper on this subject. I've done reasonably well for a West Pittsburg philosophy major.
