Trump makes the suggestion that DEI hiring practices at the FAA "could have been" to blame for the crash.

But when pressed for evidence that diversity hiring was to blame for the tragedy, Trump said he did not have any.

"It just could have been," the president said, later adding: "I have common sense, OK? And unfortunately a lot of people don't."
He apparently was not talking about skin color:
----
Trump highlighted a January 14 Fox News article titled "FAA's diversity push includes focus on hiring people with 'severe intellectual' and 'psychiatric' disabilities," detailing the FAA's DEI push in the final days of the Biden administration.

Trump then paraphrased the subheading, "FAA says people with severe disabilities are most underrepresented segment of the workforce," contending that the Biden administration wanted to put DEI hires in the roles of "air traffic controllers."

Yup, the crash happened because people with mental and physical challenges were in charge of getting planes landed. Sure Trump and Q Anon idiots.

Democratic senators who opposed 2024 FAA legislation warned of adding flights to Reagan Airport

Last May, Congress voted to add five new long-distance round-trip flights to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport as part of an extensive bill authorizing $105 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration.

But months earlier, in February 2024, four Democratic senators from Maryland and Virginia, including Sen. Tim Kaine, issued a statement warning that air traffic at Reagan was already congested and that allowing that many additional incoming and outgoing flights would be "reckless" and "gambling with the safety of everyone who uses this airport."

In December, the Department of Transportation announced that it had awarded five airlines slots to fly passengers from Reagan to select western destinations, from San Antonio to Seattle.

Why would lesbians be less able than anyone else to be air traffic controllers? Size and strength isn't an issue, just the mental abilities to handle directing multiple planes at the same time.

As for fire hoses, anybody in front of one will get knocked down by the powerful stream no matter how strong they are

My understanding was that Reagan National was supposed to close when Dulles was opened in the 1960s, but politicians preserving their travel convenience kept Reagan National open.

I think the issue is the gender-affirming care paid for by our tax dollars. You know, the care that Kamala Harris promised would be free for all prisoners and air traffic controllers.

1. I've been reading about the FAA hiring issues and it seems like this is a legit issue that may well be rooted in a legitimate desire to make their ranks more racially diverse, but has actually resulted in there just being fewer controllers.

2. It was still irresponsible for Trump or anyone else to have blamed this whole thing on "DEI" without having any idea if that was the root cause of the crash. Also, Trump himself had the opportunity to improve this situation while he was President the first time and did not.

If the FAA is like my agency, they've been chronically understaffed for years. When we have an opening in our office, it takes 9-12 months to hire a replacement. My current position was vacant for 18 months before I took it over. Upper management points fingers at the HR department at OPM dragging their feet. I think that may have some truth to it, but I think the real reason is that while the position is unfilled, they don't have to pay out salaries and benefits. In the meantime, we have to do extra work to cover the vacant shifts and have less time for training and non shift work duties. Because of people retiring and getting promoting to other offices, we're currently about 30% short of full staffing and with a hiring freeze, it doesn't we'll be getting new employees any time soon. God help us if they decided to can the new employees that are still in their probationary period and can be fired at will for any reason.

Trumps big folly was that he stepped into the briefing room during Covid, and now he's stepping in again during another tragedy.
His vanity will hurt him again if there are more problems, and there will be.

Covid:
Trump's health people, Fauci and Brix, began to get a lot of news coverage, so Trump said to himself that HE would rather get the coverage. That's when he looked entirely stupid and unqualified. Inject bleach or light? What a dumb ass.

Air crash:
He's doing the same thing. Wanting to stand and talk about something serious though he has no ability to do so.

This might just be one of the dumber posts here in recent memory.

If you had any clue about what it takes to become an AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER, you would realize just how pathetically stupid your DEI narrative is when it comes to this particular profession.

There is a MASSIVE weeding out process when it comes to Air Traffic Control positions.
You don't seem to be even remotely aware of this.

There are multiple pass/fail points and it literally takes 3 years before an Air Traffic Controller actually talks to an aircraft on his own. They have to go through an academy, undergo medical screening, an IQ test, as well as tons of simulator training just for starters. There are multiple FAILURE points which results in an attrition rate of 40 - 50%.

And yet you're ranting about this tragedy being correlated with DEI?

Your post is typical of someone here at Bearinsider that has no clue.

"In his first national tragedy, President Trump posted like a pundit, speculated needlessly, and blamed Democrats and DEI even though the specifics were unknown, Axios' Zachary Basu writes.

Why it matters: The traditional presidential playbook is boring by design pray for the lost and their families, reassure the public, promise a swift investigation. That has never been Trump's style.

The big picture: It's vintage Trump: His instincts for bare-knuckle brawling were a huge asset during his four years in the wilderness, helping to fuel a historic political comeback.

But Trump is president now, not a powerless pundit. His words carry the weight of the U.S. government."

With all respect due (which is absolutely none in this isolated case) I'd like to offer a hearty "go to hell and while you're on the way, take a moment to have a good look in the mirror at your sad ass self" to anybody that's jumping into the "DEI is the problem here" pool two days into this. I agree with you.

He has a potential point about DEI for mental disabilities and hiring delays. But a person needs to be careful - especially in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy - when making causal accusations.

Trump did a really good job during the campaign of keeping his mouth shut. That apparently is gone now that he has won. That's bad for him, the Presidency and our country.
