President Biden's economy is still booming. In January 2024, President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act removing the penalty for having pensions. In February 2025 those retro payments started going out. Last week, the BEA reported a 0.8% increase in personal income from the prior month, the majority of which came from the law signed by President Biden.

It will be fun to watch magats simultaneously try to take credit for the increase, complain that Biden's law hurts the deficit, and pass a deficit exploding tax cut for the rich all at the same time.

New Jersey primaries for Governor are next week, one of only 2 states to elect a Governor this year. My preferred candidate, Steven Fulop, is a YIMBY, pro abundance (before it was a thing) guy with a very successful track record as Mayor of New Jersey's 2nd largest city.

The winner of the Democratic primary is very likely to be the next Governor. Since 1985 only once has the President's party won NJ Governor (2020-2021 when Democrats Biden and Murphy won - if you recall the media portrayed 2021 as a terrible result for Democrats in NJ despite this achievement because they hate Democrats).

Fulop is likely to lose to generic center-left Democrat, Mikie Sherrill (my Congresswoman since 2018, when we flipped our 20 point red district to blue). I think the takeaway here is that, for as much noise as they make, there just isn't a strong constituency for the YIMBY crowd. This should be an easy win for them but they are MIA.

The same people who voted for Trump will tell you they believe in the Constitution - which is an impossibility.

"Trump: Well, we're going to have troops everywhere.

Reporter: What's the bar for sending in the Marines

Trump: The bar is what I think it is."

The YIMBY abundance candidate finished in 3rd in the Democratic governor primary election. I voted for him but there is no constituency for it.

I don't necessarily see this "abundance" stuff as a political platform to run on, rather a model for governance, whether you are progressive or moderate. How do you get stuff done? Perhaps some insights can be found there.

It's also literally a new concept. I wouldn't expect it to have had major impact already.

The guy did it for 12 years in Jersey City, the #2 city in the state. He delivered. Got him nowhere.

Not sure this means anything one way or the other, but okay.

Guys, it is time to put them all on ignore and follow through on it.

They will justify or deflect any acts of violence
They will push propaganda
They will deny what is right before our eyes
They will work to create a set of "known" facts regardless of the truth
They are fascists
That is what fascists do

You are wasting your time engaging in discourse with fascists

This whole Zohran Mamdani thing is a good topic for a non-fascist discussion because Democrats should discuss what we want to offer and there is no need to engage with those who will spread lies and fear into the discussion. If I voted in NYC I would have either voted for Mamdani or Lander. Can't say I researched enough to know which one.

Here is a good discussion Mamdani had with the Bloomberg Odd Lots podcast - mostly on housing:

Mamdani Proposals from this article:
https://19thnews.org/2025/06/zohran-mamdani-policies-affordability-housing-child-care/

Child Care and Education - Expand NYC's early education from 3-4 year olds to 6 weeks to 5 years. Strengthen schools. Some free baby supplies for babies.

Housing Affordability - Rent freeze on rent controlled apartments (bad idea) and 200,000 new affordable housing units (good idea).

Minimum Wage - Raise from $16.50 to $30.00 by 2030 (good idea to raise minimum wage but that is a big leap).

Food deserts - Public grocery stores in NYC areas that are food deserts

LGBTQ - Public investment in gender affirming care

Overall, I think Mamdani is moving in the right direction, particularly with the push for affordable housing units. Would I propose things exactly the way he wants to? Not necessarily, but there is more good than bad here and it's a great opportunity to break the status quo which is not working for young people.

The most likely scenario is that if there is a Mamdani Administration it is destroyed by hostile media and entrenched interests, like the police force, before his initiatives have a chance to succeed.

If I did live in NYC and voted in the Dem primary, my philosophy would have probably have been "anyone but Cuomo." The other candidates have big question marks around them, but we know for sure that Cuomo is toxic and corrupt. Given that, if Mamdani is the most popular of the opposition, so be it!

I suspect a lot of his big promises will not be possible, because there won't be the money for it and because the city doesn't necessarily have the ability to do that on its own. Ultimately it will come down to how well he governs. If he can actually improve affordability in the city then he'll be successful. Good governance will probably require some moderation, but a good politician can spin that.

I am very happy that the Republicans have gutted the filibuster. Long term, this is good for democracy and good for America
