This iconic California company is leaving the state - https://www.deseret.com/politics/2025/07/21/in-n-out-is-moving-its-hq-out-of-california/

I get the California not family friendly claim (housing costs?), and I understand closing the Oakland locations due to crime. I didn't understand the reference to lack of business. Antidotally, evert time we get anywhere near their locations there are massive lines.

They're just moving their headquarters out of CA, not closing their CA restaurants.

IMO, INOut Burgers taste good due to condiments and freshness. The burger itself is just okay. Fries are meh, but they are supposed to be healthier with only one fry, rather than the double fry. Shakes are good.

The article indicates the are keeping their CA stores, but making a big expansion on the east coast.

The Habit burgers are pricey. average char burgers, bland and salty. They are expanding still in CA and a lot outside CA. IMO, they have good selections outside theirnburgers. Also, no mammoth lines lines like INOut.

I'm a huge Shake Shack fan - love their burgers.

CA continues to be the place that creates billionaires. Funny how often they then complain about the place.

Best to get the INO fries light well done. Much better

Also mustard fried for the burger makes it a bit tangier and tasty

I find Shake Shack burgers to be very salty, Habit not near so.

Agreed about Shake Shack. Burgers are terrible. Five Guys is best on east coast but nothing compares to In N Out.

InNOut is well managed inexpensive and good fast food- best option on a trip. There are better burgers but not at the price.

I will say it even at the risk of ridicule: Jumbo Jacks are good burgers.

There's no shame in a good Jumbo Jack, especially when they had them at 99 cents!

Any STEM people out there may appreciate my Burger Rule #4: The height of a burger must be less than 50% of the diameter. This is a non-negotiable, but so often ignored...

They both serve food. I go to my Farmer Boys and there's an InNOut right next door. I moon them as I drive by.

About ten years ago, I stopped going to Smokehouse because they violated my Burger Rule #7 ("Onions shall be sliced and not chopped."), but then I started going back this year and I'm digging the place again, as are my kids. Go figure.

Where else in the world can you make a billion dollars and be hated for it, than in California? (Admittedly, some billionaires deserve hate).

They are not in NorCal. SoCal, Nevada and Arizona. Typically in family areas. They are known for having fresh produce and a diverse menu. We have them as a tenant. Their signature items are hand-breaded zucchini sticks and onion rings. They make decent burgers, but they don;t consider themselves a "burger place".

We have a winner. They make a soggy, greasy burger, so yea they are good. I like smash burgers hence he Shake Shake thing, and 5 Guys is pretty close to that.

And you are right, you need a second mortgage to eat there. They also overcook their fries. If they became a tenant, I would say the food is so good they provide great value. But right now you get the unvarnished truth.

Rule #4 is highly controversial, not many publishing houses are going to be on board with that.
