A sitting POTUS can be subpoenaed by a defendant in a criminal case if it is relevant to proving their defense.
All of the prosecutions Trump is directing Pam Blondie to initiate against his political enemies are meritless and based on imaginary crimes existing only in Trump's paranoid delusional mind.
Every defendant is going to claim, at least as part of their defense, that they are innocent of the crime charged and that the only reason the prosecution was brought is because Trump wants vengeance against his political enemies. The defendant is entitled to call Trump as a witness and examine him on this topic (think John Bolton case).
In the case of Jack Smith, he has a 2nd reason to call Trump: Smith will assert that the criminal prosecution of Trump was not a baseless political witch hunt but rather a justified prosecution based on the fact Trump actually committed the crimes charged. Smith is entitled to call Trump as a witness in court and be cross examined in front of the jury on this issue.
Why the prosecutions can't proceed:
Trump will never be allowed to testify in court because he is a pathological liar that is not smart enough or has the mental faculties to memorize a consistent and believable false narrative. He can't control his emotions and is at risk of exploding and melting down on the witness stand.*
Because of Trump's liability as a witness, all the prosecutions of Trump's political enemies will never see the inside of a courtroom. These prosecutions are being brought solely for harassment purposes and perhaps to extort promises from the defendants not to talk smack about Trump.
