This was actually a fairly interesting experience for me!
What started out as an examination of 6 Degrees of Separation turned into consideration of the quality of our BearInsider OT dialogue. And more.
It's long been a rage, among some, that OT is a wasteland that should be shut down. Enter PRISONER'S DILEMMA of this video at the 24 minute mark.
I ask that you watch the video and then apply the science to BI OT and consider how WE have the power to improve the quality of our discussions.
Of note is the research of Axelrod and tit-for-tat, taken on by Watts and Strogatz's study of networks at 26:30. Though you probably have to invest the full half hour to put it all together.
In Prisoners Dilemma, the world tends toward Cooperators if the world is comprised of local connections ONLY.
However, if you add in just a few shortcuts (nonlocal connections), the world flips to 100% Defectors. Wow!
Second, I was struck at how Hegseth's aggressive speech the other day was like the Defector player who, as the head of the Pentagon, is the guy with lots of "shortcuts". Or, maybe I should highlight Trump as the bigger Defector, AND the "hub". Negativity spreads!
And in the realm of global warfare, that's extremely dangerous. If every nation is a Defector, does that result in Mutually Assured Destruction (bad), or MAD-derived Peace (good, but suboptimal allocation of efforts)?
Contrasting, if every nation was a Cooperator, what kind of world do we end up with? 8 billion people couldn't all know each other, but the nations' leaders could! And if they did, the science says Cooperation spreads universally. Peace + efficiency of resource allocation.
Hmmm.
