Wow,
This was actually a fairly interesting experience for me!
What started out as an examination of 6 Degrees of Separation turned into consideration of the quality of our BearInsider OT dialogue. And more.
It's long been a rage, among some, that OT is a wasteland that should be shut down. Enter PRISONER'S DILEMMA of this video at the 24 minute mark.
I ask that you watch the video and then apply the science to BI OT and consider how WE have the power to improve the quality of our discussions.
Of note is the research of Axelrod and tit-for-tat, taken on by Watts and Strogatz's study of networks at 26:30. Though you probably have to invest the full half hour to put it all together.
In Prisoners Dilemma, the world tends toward Cooperators if the world is comprised of local connections ONLY.
However, if you add in just a few shortcuts (nonlocal connections), the world flips to 100% Defectors. Wow!
Second, I was struck at how Hegseth's aggressive speech the other day was like the Defector player who, as the head of the Pentagon, is the guy with lots of "shortcuts". Or, maybe I should highlight Trump as the bigger Defector, AND the "hub". Negativity spreads!
And in the realm of global warfare, that's extremely dangerous. If every nation is a Defector, does that result in Mutually Assured Destruction (bad), or MAD-derived Peace (good, but suboptimal allocation of efforts)?
Contrasting, if every nation was a Cooperator, what kind of world do we end up with? 8 billion people couldn't all know each other, but the nations' leaders could! And if they did, the science says Cooperation spreads universally. Peace + efficiency of resource allocation.
Hmmm.
The final takeaway,
"Our actions shape us.
But our actions shape the networks.
So, choose both wisely."
You all are intelligent Cal grads, right?
Dive into this video with your thinking hats on and comment intelligently.
And if someone annoys you, you can always actively choose the Ignore button, rather than snark back.
Let's cooperate to make BI OT the type of network that uplifts us all.
The science tells us:
Cooperation spreads!
Negativity spreads!
Let's choose Cooperation.

"Cooperation is fostered by having little clumps (local connections). If I have a little clump of people who are my buds, we get to have a lot of encounters and cooperation tends to emerge from familiarity - the same way that iteration works, that if I know I'm going to see you again it ends up being to my advantage to cooperate.
"Whereas in the world of the internet where anyone can get on Twitter and badmouth anyone else. That tends to discourage. We don't have pockets, you don't have communities. "
- "It kind of explains this keyboard warrior phenomenon. People say things on the internet they wouldn't say to your face."
- "They wouldn't! Most people are nice in real life!"

The final takeaway,
Quote:
"If one person does something selfish, everything goes south. Universal Defectors.
In another world, everyone holds it together (Cooperation) and everything goes well!"
…"In real life, you can choose who you hang out with. So Watts re-ran the experiment allowing players to change who they were playing with, and using the prisoners dilemma so people could identify the Defectors."
- and the finding was clear. The more you allowed players to choose who they were playing with, the more likely they were to cooperate!
- "You can make this a lot better for yourself by just acting and being decisive. There's nothing to be gained by continuing to interact with people who are bringing negativity into your life."

But our actions shape the networks.
So, choose both wisely."
