A PhD is literally required to comprehend medical billing these days. Dont even get me started.
I have an MBA and my wife has an MD and we joke that we dont understand medical billing
Right?
Seven years ago, I did an echo stress test and they gave me a Holter monitor that unbeknownst to me was "out of network". As everyone knows, that phrase is the kiss of death. Apparently, my cardiologist liked using the "out of network" model instead. I started getting bills every Saturday morning for $4700 because the billing codes were different and they were charging me the retail price of the monitor.
Thanks to a woman in billing named Marge, it all finally got sorted out. At the end of the day, I think I paid $165. But it was a pain in the ass getting to that point.
And over this Summer, I had to get a series of rabies shots. All told, it was $112,000 for the initial rabies immune globulin shots (RIG) and the series of vaccine shots. They billed Medicare $3,000. I wound up paying roughly $1200 out of pocket.
Medical billing is a mystery.
