After watching an epic episode of "60 Minutes" last night I just had to kick off a thread on the Olympics.

And who better to start it off with than U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu who stunned the world when she "retired" at age 16 after placing 6th at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and winning Bronze at the Worlds in France.

She retired on April 9th, 2022 via social media.

And one can't help but think a lot of her decision had to do with it being a "job" and her Dad a Tiger Dad.

Dude was so embedded in her career, scripting everything that she did, what she ate, her training, song choice, schedule - - - along with a revolving door of coaches that came and went including 1998 Olympic Champion Tara Lipinski.

But in March of 2024 she posted on her Instagram that she wanted to lace up her skates again not just for fun, but to COMPETE . . . but only on her terms. - - - She essentially "fired" her Dad.

She was born in Clovis.
Lives in Richmond and works out at the Oakland Ice Center.

I did not know this. I'll need to check this out. Big fan of the Olympics, especially the x-country stuff, biathlon etc. Friend of mine does curling over at that center in Oakland, loves it.

I remember watching that Winter Quarter my senior year. I told a buddy,"I think I just watched a guy falling down a mountain win the Gold Medal."

….and in 8th grade this guy made a big impression on me:

Looks like her knee gave out while she was trying to turn, as opposed to after the impact with the nets. Tough luck for her given the timing.

Yeah, the crash into the nets was quite slow.
By then, she had scrubbed off an awful lot of speed.

This is so sad, because she was looking terrific and getting on the podium in literally every race.
We will see how she feels come this Sunday.

My prayers are with her!

Hopefully, her ACL won't matter on Sunday.

I've read that she's been doing some high stress workouts and has no swelling, no pain.

But a weather delay (fog or heavy snowfall) would be welcome I think from Team Vonn.

She's been skiing in Cortina for 25 years.
