Killion also took exception with Gu complaining about schedule conflicts with her events and practice times, which put Gu at a disadvantage to her competitors.

I found this rather strange, given how Killion has championed transgender rights and an "equitable" playing field.

She said she found my conflation weird.
Lolz.
Cults don't end well. They really don't.

What does trans rights have to do with Gu having time conflicts?

Cal has done well for itself over the years, especially for a school with limited space for athletic facilities.

I ripped Killion back.

I think our colleague "brobear" would have said my facts were "combative". LOL!

Must have gotten under Anne's skin because she got involved in an email "tag" with me.

She took exception with San Franciscan and Furd student Gu competing for China and allegedly being paid $16 million by the Chinese Govt.

Gu is 22 and reportedly making $23 million a year in Endorsements for being the most medaled athlete in her Sport.

I told Killion, who cares?
She isn't making any political statements.
Far from it.

As most sports fans know, Louisiana Pole Vaulter Mondo Duplantis competes for his Mom's native Sweden. He owns the World Record.

IMO Ann Killion's criticism is entirely fair and what Gu should expect as an American taking money from the CCP.

How about if we redo the ranking by state?

Also, how will this be tallied in the new era were a kid gets 6 schools in 6 years?

Man, maybe those top schools there should form a conference of their own some day. One for champions, perhaps.

Honestly, I think it was just a sports reporter trying to create "controversy" where there is none.

Again, it's not like Gu is making any political statements
In fact, she's been "baited" into doing so by reporters and never falls for the trap.

Again, plenty of athletes in the Olympics compete for their Mom's country.
Gu gets criticized it because it just happens to be CHINA.

Read Killian's article and let me know what you think.

I read the article and told you what I think. Gu should expect that she's going to to get criticism as an American competing for China and clearly taking money from them to do so. Killion is reporting on the controversy that already exists around that choice. It's fair.
BearlySane88

You just explained the controversy
DiabloWags

Killian made Gu out to be a prima donna and whining about scheduling conflicts that didn't allow her to have training sessions. It was as if Killian was "fishing" to throw mud up on the wall and see what would stick and create controversy.

It should have been obvious to her that in Track & Field there is no practice conflict because there is a practice track.
Same with Swimming and a warm up pool. Same for gymnastics.

But when it comes to getting training time for her half-pipe, slope style, and big air competitions, it's not like there is a "practice" facility for that.

We all know that there are event conflicts on an Olympic schedule.
It's why you never see someone attempt a 400m/400m hurdle double.

But here, Gu was making statements about petitioning for a change so that she could get PRACTICE TIME in on a specific facility.

It's ironic that Killian conflated that with her examples of Ledecky and Biles and yet couldn't understand an earlier point that I made about being "equitable" and her having supported transgender high school athletes competing at the CIF State Track & Field Championships.

Her conversation with me made little sense to me.
Oh well.

Its tough being a young, attractive Asain American and multi-medal Olympian from San Francisco.

Growing up as an Asian American, vou're never Asian enough and never American enouqh. That's the Asian American experience.

Reminds me of the "entitled" sports reporters that crapped all over Barry Bonds and tore him down.

Im not gonna judge her.
I will leave that to Ann Killion and others who have never competed at the highest level.

No, people have already voiced why they don't like her. I think bringing attractiveness into it, which is entirely subjective, just diminishes the actual issues people have with her.

Man, I grew up half-Chinese in San Francisco just like Eileen Gu. It's not that hard if you grow up there; mixed-Asian people are everywhere in that city. And we literally have another example right now in Alysa Liu who has a very similar background and is getting near universal love for her Olympic efforts. It's not being Asian or being a woman that makes Gu controversial. It's literally because she took money from the CCP and now serves as their propaganda tool. Whether or not she realizes it, that's what she is and why they pay her.

Now personally I am not going to waste my time calling her names on Twitter or whatever. She's just a skier and life's too short for that. It also seems like she made this decision as a teenager and was probably pushed into it by her mother or some other influencers, so she may truly have not understood what she was signing up for at the time. But I'm not going to cheer for her and I'm also not going to be naive about why she gets shade from Americans. It's very obvious why.

All olympic athletes are to some extent, "propaganda tools" for their countries, that's why governments fund their Olympic teams and youth projects.

As well, most of her revenues are not from the Chinese government but from corporate sponsorship by international brands and Chinese firms:

Eileen Gu corporate sponsorships and partnerships include:
Global Luxury and Lifestyle Brands
  • Louis Vuitton: Luxury fashion partner.
  • Tiffany & Co.: Jewelry brand, for which she has been a long-term ambassador.
  • Porsche: Endorsement deal.
  • IWC Schaffhausen: Luxury watch brand ambassador.
  • Red Bull: Long-term sponsor.
  • Victoria's Secret: Member of the "VS Collective".
  • IMG Models: Represents her in fashion and modeling.
    +4
Chinese and Tech Companies
  • Anta Sports: Chinese sportswear giant.
  • TCL Electronics: Global brand ambassador for the electronics firm.
  • Mengniu Dairy: Major Chinese dairy company.
  • Bank of China: Financial services.
  • Luckin Coffee: Popular Chinese coffee chain.
  • China Mobile: Telecommunications.
  • JD.com: E-commerce platform.
  • Bosideng: Down apparel brand.
And if we're going to celebrate an individual's right to choose, you have to respect her choice.

Many of those corporate sponsorships are downstream of her being the CCP's propaganda tool. You cannot separate one from the other. But also, if she played for the US she would still get plenty of sponsorships. She chose to take the extra benefits from China.

It's also worth noting that if she had actually been born in China, there's no way she would have that choice without leaving that country permanently. It's only because she's American that she has the privilege to compete for another country while still enjoying the benefits of citizenship here.

I don't think those rights should be stripped away, of course, but I do think that's why it would be better to choose to compete for the US. Especially if the choice is between that and an authoritarian regime like the CCP. Those who compete for other democratic allies like the UK are another matter.
