Fuggin idiot!
I'd be like my uncle - conscientious objector.
Another uncle was one of 169 spots out of 10,000 with the Coast Guard. They knew someone.
Uncle served as asst to some high rank dude on governors island in ny harbor and spent the war doing fun parties and receptions in uniform.

I spoke to him 6 months ago about it. He said the draft folks wanted him immediately after college graduation but he asked for one more month to see if he could grab the spot. He did, but he said, "oh yeah, they were on my ass and if it didn't work out I'd have gone."

There's no way I want anything to do with military. I'd run away to Canada, too!

My grandfather fought trench warfare in France in WWI; my Dad saw pretty good action on a destroyer in the South Pacific in WWII; and my uncle was a paratrooper in WWII and received a Purple Heart.

It always made me feel guilty that I didn't serve but not guilty enough to forgo Cal, enlist* and fight in the meat grinder that was Vietnam.

* Someone born in 1954 did not turn 18 years old until 1972 meaning they were too young to be part of the active Vietnam-era induction pool before conscription ended. Although a draft lottery for men born in 1954 was held in March 1973 as a contingency measure, no one from that birth year was ever actually called up or inducted for service.

My Mom used to take me to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital for Mass occasionally in the late 1960's. I saw badly wounded Marines there. What a tragic loss and maiming of life.

One grandfather served stateside training newbies at army Air Force base key field in Meridian Miss, because he worked for TWA before and knew aircraft or airfield operations. He was in the military band there.

Another became an officer in the navy after cal. He was in Norfolk VA but never crossed. He was in the cal band and went to the rose bowl in 38.

My stepfather graduated Princeton in 44 and immediately went to a rushed officer school for navy at Columbia. 3 months. He then was a navigator officer of a small communications boat.

They crossed in an armada of 600 or 800 ships. As the approached Gibraltar a stray German plane flew over and was shot down. Before it crashed into the ocean it hit the only substantial thing on board, their communications mast.

They sat dead in water all night until dawn when they saw a war ship guns trained on them. No way to communicate, hard to see, was it friend or foe.

Then he got mumps in Naples and was in a hospital when it was being bombed.

He had/made some excuse, real or invented, about his knee, was sent back to us where he had an operation on cartilage. The war ended while he was in rehab in Colorado, just after his marriage.
A desperate humping? Hahaha.

His father named his knee "Woodrow". Can anyone figure out why?

PS:
My cal dad married my cal mom (when you were 10) because his college deferment was running out, Just like Dick Chaney.
Then they had my brother, because LBJ changed the law saying you had to not only be married but have a kid. Guess who is one month older than my brother?
Liz Chaney.

They was a mini baby boom around LBJ's announcement.

They keep telling us we've basically won the war and Iran is desperate to make a deal but now Iran is issuing demands that America follow the MOU that Trump signed in June. Curious.

Why would you believe anything that "They" -- the Trump administration, the NeoCons, CIA/Mossad, or Netanyahu -- say?

These are the same people who lied their asses off in 2003 so that we would wipe Iraq off the face of the earth.

The U.S. & Israel conducted an unprovoked attack on Iran on 2/28, in violation of the UN Charter & International Law.

The aforementioned geniuses proclaimed that Iran would fall like a house of cards. That the "regime change" would only last a few days. That the Iranian People would "rise up" and bring down their own government. Instead, the Iranian People came together & rallied against their invaders.

Iran responded by destroying nearly all U.S. military bases in the region. And closing the Straits of Hormuz.

The U.S. & Israel got their as-es kicked. And now they're in denial. They think there's a way to open the Straits & save the world's economies (and their own) without accepting Iran's terms. There isn't.

Iran won. And they are now in control of the Straits of Hormuz, and will be for the foreseeable future.

There's no going back to 2/27. And there is no military solution. The U.S. military will be forced to abandon the Middle East, in the same way that we abandoned Vietnam & Afghanistan.

In order to re-open the Straits, the U.S. will have to compel Israel to pull the IDF from Southern Lebanon, and end its Greater Israel Project, with Israel as the primary military power, dominating the region "From the Nile to the Euphrates." That's not happening.

The U.S. does not have the ability, nor the resources, to protect Israel, the Gulf States, or ANY of our allies militarily.

The American Empire is over.

I am not sure. Repeatedly saying someone lacks empathy even though they state they empathize with the soldiers and then repeating such again because the accusations got 9 stars does seem an excessive personal attack, especially if it is part of a pattern of bullying posts. However, the mods asked us to avoid continuously posting about folks breaking board rules. I didn't even flag the multiple posts falsely accusing me. I simply defended myself instead.

Complete clownshow, $1 trillion military budget and they can't get a decent meal...

" Right now, more than 5,000 sailors and Marines are stuck aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in the ninth month of a deployment that was supposed to last seven, supporting military operations against Iran that Congress never authorized.

Their families are begging someone to listen.

Moldy showers, broken toilets, no hot water for weeks, meals that came down to half a cup of rice and two tortillas.

A ship's store out of soap, deodorant, and toothpaste.

Sailors so worn down that, according to one family member, the ship's own doctor warned they need to reach port soon or people are going to start losing their minds.

Back in April, when families first raised the alarm, Pete Hegseth dismissed the reports as fake news. These are the people we ask to serve in one of the most dangerous workplaces on Earth, the flight deck of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

They, and their families, deserve answers."

Most military and their families voted for this so it is hard for me to understand their complaints

The fact that we're in the war at all is the Trump issue.

That's a separate argument. You can believe the decision to enter the war was Trump's responsibility while still recognizing that a sailor suffering a mental health crisis isn't. Sailors have struggled with suicide, mental health emergencies, and man overboard incidents during both wartime and peacetime under administrations of both parties.

You can believe that the decision to enter the not war was Trumps responsibility while a sailor suffering a mental health crisis isn't a DOUBLE YAWN. Disingenuous POS

The guy literally wants to go back to the late 1800's with tariffs and STEAM catapults.

Guess what mechanism China uses for their aircraft carriers?

The same one we currently use by General Atomic.
Electromagnetic.

A retrofit to STEAM will cause taxpayers BILLIONS.
