• Refinery mismatch is the core issue: U.S. shale production yields mostly light, sweet crude. Many Gulf Coast refineries (built decades ago) are optimized for heavier, sourer crudes (imported mainly from Canada). Exporting surplus light crude and importing heavy allows efficient blending and maximum output of gasoline, diesel, etc. Forcing all light crude domestic would overload some refineries, reduce throughput, and cut product supply.
  
• Oil is a global commodity: Gasoline/diesel prices track global benchmarks (like Brent), not just domestic crude.
