"By the numbers: China produces 70% of the world's drones, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells, the magazine says, and "deploys more industrial robots than the rest of the world combined, and, in medicine, it has surpassed the United States in the number of registered clinical trials."

China's shipbuilding capacity is 200 times that of the U.S.

Between the lines: China's rulers avoid "overtly antagonizing America, because they believe that, even in decline, it remains uniquely dangerous."

But Rush Doshi, China specialist at Georgetown and CFR, says that if the U.S. loses the next wave of industries, AI, biotech and robotics, as it lost on solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles, "it would irreversibly change the balance of power."

A think tank at Renmin University of China, in Beijing, published a report called "Thank Trump," which argues that his tariffs, attacks on allies and immigration policies have hastened the "twilight of an empire."

Yeah.
We know.
But we can't blame everything on Trump.
It's the whole country.

Labor unions have long lobbied and picketed for higher wages and benefits: uncompetitive.

Democrats have pushed for higher minimum wages in, say, fast food restaurants: uncompetitive.

Federal government spending overall: uncompetitive.

We work less, expect more: uncompetitive.

You see, something happened on the way to now:
Global shipping.
Global communications.
Transportable financing.
WE COMPETE WITH EVERYONE.
How are we to expect things to stay the same? Those days are gone.

It's over. Visit China and it is easy to tell that we have a second rate country at this point. MAGA rule has led us to this IMO

Trump has crushed us on the international economic stage. Killed a good country IMO

Much of our country is made up of millions of MAGAs who say they hate government but are mad they aren't getting any relief or handouts. I expect them to sign on with the Democratic Socialists soon.

This is an investment, research and capital allocation problem not a minimum wage problem.

The US isn't killed and as CT said, it's definitely not something you can pin all on Trump.

You should invest in China. I'd much rather invest where workers get a share and help grow the economy even more.

The reason we lost our manufacturing base goes back 45 years to Reagan when we started undertaxing the wealthy causing big deficits which caused a big supply of US Treasuries which caused big demand for dollars to buy those Treasuries which caused the price of the dollar to go up which caused our products to be globally uncompetitive.

I argued above that it ain't coming back for USA because we now compete with the global labor market.

But it gets worse. This video introduced the notion that we will all someday be competing with the global robot labor market.

Or does it?
Rule of economics: per capita productivity increases are wealth creation.

Who gets the newly created wealth?
This is where the concept of UBI comes from.

Don't watch the video. It's 45 minutes of text reading.

While I can't dispute anything on this thread (and have myself recently started another doom-and-gloom thread on this forum), I will say that the United States has a way of surmounting seemingly huge obstacles.

Just when we're counted out...

Forty years ago, Japan was the next new thing; now it's China. Let's see how they handle what came out of our bio-labs: affluenza!

Have you seen the Ray Dalio video I've posted multiple times? Changing world order. 40 minutes.

I think your statement is exactly a reason why the cycle happens. You're relying on past performance and your expectations declare that what has been will always be - because there is something inherent and natural in it.

I really hate being a doom and gloom guy. 15 years ago I gave a presentation to a foundation about the long terms merits of US stocks, siding with you.

But my attitude has changed during these last ten years, which were heretofore Unfathomable.

Chime tequila to feel sorry for me to see everything through the Trump prism. But as I've also written. It's far broader than one guy. It's the movement, it's the attitude, it's the structure of our systems, the capture of those systems…. It's the $40T which is only accelerating.

In college I wrote a paper/report on Walter Figgie's book "Bankruptcy 1995". I was in the airport lounge reading when a man my current age smiled and kinda laughed. He said, "I was your age in the 60's reading similar books. But it just keeps going."

The U.S. federal national debt was approximately $3.67 trillion at the end of fiscal year 1991, and the U.S. federal debt-to-GDP ratio was approximately 58%.

Today it's $39.46T and 123%.

"But it's different this time!"

Every thing he touches will be undone….just like his name on the Kennedy Center. All statues will join JoPa's as part of an artificial reef off the coast of Florida.

The competition ain't gonna undo Nothin'!

"Foreman says these jobs are going, boys, and they ain't coming back!"

Back in the era of this song, Americans lamented the closing steel mills. Well, those are so far gone we don't even talk about steel mill town anymore.

40 years on, today, middle America is derided as a flyover state. The population is scared during changing demographics, too. They were ripe for the pickings by a snake oil salesman who told them all their problems were the fault of someone else, and that he was the one who could fix it - he was the way forward.

You know, this is the same dynamic that led to the rise of Adolph in the 30's following the ruins of WW1 and reparations years.

Well… enjoy the song, at least.

Will China return capital to investors? Or will the state utilize it for the next step in its larger strategy?

I like capitalism. But capitalism with only the master of profits is flawed.

I suppose this could be an oncoming topic for research, education.
