"Boys playing in girls sports" was and is a lightning rod issue here in Maine and I imagine states where HS sports and/or college sports reign supreme. The argument that there are like almost zero examples of this insidious trans invasion falls on deaf ears as it does with the vast majority of Americans both left and right. Every gubernatorial race here on the GOP side ran ads ranging from "protecting girls sports" to trans-shaming despite there being few instances here (although highly publicized). These ads are very effective. This is a losing issue for dems and "socialists" and now I get to see the politicians glom onto the WNBA as another example of libs gone cray cray on TV during football season….not to mention all of the racists jumping on the white vs black angle to get even more attention

That's a very accurate post.
Hardly affects anyone, yet everyone is rabid about it. Pretty funny.

And, currently the GOP is led by a loser president and a $40T debt, so what a great topic to lead with into November, right?!?!?!

Who had the brilliance to start this thread? Highly important topic, which is pretty much what my first post here was.

Now then, about that stamp collection. I'd rather talk about that than get swept up in a banning roundup after accidentally tripping over a toxic subject.

36% of high school-aged girls actively play on a sports team. The direction this debate goes certainly matters although I haven't seen anybody rabid about it.

Millions of marketing dollars and / or free media is spent to raise alarm about this non-issue because the ruling class needs scapegoats to generate votes so they can continue taking all the money. Americans are highly propagandized and easily led.

Not relevant given that the Southern Section that AB Hernandez competed in was D3.
D3 is not 47,307 state competitors.

The CIF Masters Meet takes roughly 18 competitors in the field events from four divisions.
From Masters, the top 8 qualify for State prelims, unless there are competitors who made the auto-qualifier.

To imply that AB Hernandez beat out 47,307 other competitors or took their "spot" is just plain wrong.

Considering this happens so rarely, I think the way they're handling it currently is just fine. No biological girl lost her spot on the podium. If it was common for the biological girls to be losing roster spots or podium spots to trans girls, this issue would cry for more regulation, but it's not.

This issue is just red meat for people who think transgender girls are going to take over girls sports. Or for people who just get all worked up over the trans issue, in general.

This is true.
And a good observation.

They all know each other from previous competitions during the season, as well as over the years. Moreover, in the field events there is a lot of waiting around given that there are usually 6 rounds of jumps. This can lend itself to making friendships and a supportive atmosphere of "friendly" competition.

The sprinters and middle distance runners on the track are quite the opposite. They want to blow each other into the weeds.

The CIF State Meet is really special.
There are no divisions. Small schools vs Big schools.

Ive been many times.
One of the greatest competitions you can ever attend.

It is ridiculous, but not for the reason trans women athletes think it is.

It is exclusively a fairness issue, not a political or a discrimination issue.

Trans men compete against men. Check;

Trans women compete against men. Check

Trans women compete against women. No colorable argument to support it regardless of what balloon animal shape you have to twist your argument into.

Questions de Jour:

What percentage of trans women track athletes are interested in competing if they don't have a realistic chance of placing?

How many trans men athletes compete in track and field?

Why you reckon that number is so much smaller than the number of trans women that compete in track and field?

Yeah from what I can tell the rules in California are that trans girls can compete in the girls' division but the cis girls don't lose podium spots if a trans athlete happens to medal. They both get medals. That seems okay to me.

Everybody gets a trophy. By the time I was 13, I had but one trophy. Ex 49er the late Kevin Hardy (the Notre Dame one) handed it to me at his alma mater St. Elizabeth High School. It was when my 8th grade CYO hoop team at St. Paschal's beat the best team in Oakland, St. Leo's, to win a tournament. Mike Phelps was the St. Leo's coach.

That trophy meant a lot to me. It didn't end up at the bottom of a closet with 50 other trophies.

This issue is just red meat for people who think transgender girls are going to take over girls sports. Or for people who just get all worked up over the trans issue, in general.

It is not an extremely important issue to me, and I readily admit there are small number of trans athletes, but to think why it has become such a big issue is simply because it is for political gain or prejudice belies the posters own biases. The argument seems to be transgender athletes represent a tiny fraction of competitors so why does anyone care except for political advantage, and all those people who care are just dumb lambs that we smarter elites know better than. In fact, in the last Pew Poll, showed 73% of Americans were against trans athletes participating in women's sports.

The concerns are in fact at the higher sports levels, such as the Olympics, and that is among other things because young girls deeply look up to top female athletes. Studies show that visible women in sports boost girls' confidence, motivate them to play sports, and a whole lot of other things that parents and experts find desirable. And the parents, friends and relatives of these girls care, as do the athletes who participate at a higher level and their parents and others that support them. They are concerned regarding competitive fairness, physiological differences, and in the US, what they see as a father erosion of the protection of opportunities provided by Title IX by allowing male attendance (after reading at least I now know what the Title 9 issues actually is about). And it just not in the US or Maine, or wherever.

Intense global debates sparked by events in the Tokyo and Paris games where transgender athletes dominated in several sports forced the IOC to reevaluate its position, after undertaking a lengthy study, and then to ban trans athletes. Backed by medical experts, the study argued that even minimal biological advantages from male development compromise competitive fairness and physical safety in contact or combat disciplines. Internal polling indicated that a vast majority of female athletes and Olympians favored protected biological categories and heavily influenced the final policy shift. Of course these world class athletes were being misled by loser world leaders perpetuating the ruling class and the rest of the usual predictable garbage from the usual know it all sources who see any issues wholly through the lens of their rabid political views, not to mention the most people who follow sports in the world, and the 75% of Americans and the rest of the sheep. And you wonder why these elitist folks keep supporting candidates that can't win elections?

Big C

To me, all the cases are not the same and merit different responses.

Let's say one of our walk-on basketball players on Mark Madsen's team isn't getting playing time (or even NIL!) and all of a sudden decides to declare themselves to be a transgender woman in order to join the women's team, where they would dominate. I doubt any reasonable person would think this is okay.

Other end of the "acceptability spectrum" (at least to me), let's say a teenager born male has considered themselves to be a transgender girl since age 10 and has been on puberty blockers since age 12. They want to be on the high school girls' track team because they like to run and they have friends who are participating. Competing against other girls, they are middle-of-the-pack and have little chance of ever finishing in the top 3 in even a dual meet.

Personally, I would have no problem with the second example above. Some people would, I'm sure, but I would not.

Then, of course, there are all the situations that would fall in between the two examples above (most of them). The question is, where do you draw the line? One way would be to just prohibit trans girls competing against biological girls, period. But I would argue for a more nuanced approach. Come up with guidelines. For the trans girl that placed in the State Meet, I have no problem with the way they have handled it.

That said, isn't it conceivable that there are some situations that are close to my second example above? Seems to me like there could be trans girls who want to play a sport but aren't much better than the average biological girls in that sport.

Moreover -- and this might be the debut of Toxic Male Big C* -- don't most trans girls not even want to play sports? I mean, the vast majority of them probably just want to do "girly stuff", right"

I hung out chatting with Bruce Jenner in 2012 in the lobby of the Riverview Lodge in Eugene, Oregon at the U.S. Olympic Trials at 11:30 pm at night with my buddy former Cal pole vault coach Scott Slover who coached Katie Morgan to an NCAA Championship.

Scott and I did a road trip to support Cal's Allison Stokke at the Trials. Scott's dad had taught Bruce how to pole vault in San Jose. Both Scott and his Dad were Olympic Trials pole vaulters. Scott in 2000 and 2004 with a best of 18-06.

From Wiki...

In 1975, a group of traveling Finnish athletes took part in an NCAA Prep meet at Hayward Field in Eugene. After the event on Thursday, May 29, which included a 5,000-meter race that Prefontaine won, the Finnish and American athletes attended a party at the home of former Duck runner Geoff Hollister.

Shortly after midnight, Prefontaine left the party to drive Frank Shorter to Kenny Moore's home on Prospect Drive, then descended narrow Skyline Boulevard alone, east of the university campus near Hendricks Park.

While in the extended right curve near the base, his gold-colored 1973 MGB convertible crossed the center line, jumped the curb, hit a rock wall and flipped, trapping him underneath it.

One of the first people at the scene was 20-year-old Karl Bylund, who raced from the scene in his car to his residence to fetch his father, a doctor. A nearby resident, Bill Alvarado (19362006), arrived next at the scene (he had heard Bylund's car screeching off) and reported that he found the man flat on his back, unconscious and pinned beneath the wreck. Prefontaine was pronounced dead at the scene on the arrival of paramedics. He was 24 years old.

His blood alcohol content (BAC) was found by the Eugene Police Department to be 0.16%. In Oregon at the time, a BAC of 0.10% was considered driving while intoxicated while 0.15% was a criminal offense. The official cause of his death was traumatic asphyxiation. No other injuries contributed to his death.

Pre RIP.

Memories can deceive, but I remember seeing Pre run indoors at the Oakland Arena. Would that have been before 1972, 1972, or after 1972. In the week's lead-up to the meet, he made sure everyone knew he wanted then to clap in rhythm for his (and everybody) throughout the race (5000 meters?)

I went to that meet two years in a row, with my parents. The meet was annual and had a name. What was it, DW? My mom smoked in the stands. This is my recollection.

That is a great question, and maybe I should have said "allegedly". Because it gets real interesting. The most well known cases that are pointed out are various medal winning boxers (e.g., Imane Khief) and judo participants that were determined by their individual sport Olympic Federation to not be women based on genetic testing and the results were overturned by the International Olympic Committee (at the time, that IOC rules allowed men who identified as women to compete). So are they "transexuals"? I'm not really sure how the Olympics will now determine biological gender since they have now determined that biological men cannot compete, not matter how they identify. None of the women that were viewed by their sport associations as men had ever viewed themselves as men or transsexuals. There was an openly transgender woman that won a gold medal in soccer, and two other openly trans women, one in weightlifting and the other in mogul skiing that did okay, but didn't win medals. The whole thing is a quagmire, but as should be obvious from this thread, it is a big deal to a lotta people.
