Not since Gotti whacked Big Paul Castellano at Sparks has something like this happened. Looks like there could be some unrest in New York. Cali was old school and kept a low profile.

Since we are talking Mafia hits, Joe "The Animal" Barboza was a "button man" for the mob that went rat and was put in the witness protection program. It is said that FBI agents sometimes get loose lipped about such things when they are in taverns. Well, in 1976, Joe was found shotgun blasted in the street in the Sunset District in SF where he had been relocated by the Feds. He had a parakeet shoved in his mouth.

After reading the story linked below, it might have been a canary. I read everything I could get my hands on about the Mafia when I was young. I would have been a Senior at Cal when Barboza got whacked in the Sunset District. I would have read about it in the SF Chronicle and my aged memory is that in Joe's case they stuffed a parakeet in his mouth. Maybe the pet store was out of canaries or my memory is faulty.
