"i tell him 'don't let basketball define you...don't let it be your identity'...you see guys like magic johnson who have such an impact in the community...i think he can do great things in a community like oakland" -lou richie re: young ivee
tim harrison, an explosive 6'8" 180 lbs 2016 combo 4 from francis parker in san diego, unofficially visited cal
harrison is an active defender with a solid mid range game playing for aau game point...tim is an excellent student with also an interest in harvard, vanderbilt & stanford (also unofficially visited) with offers from academically mediocre schools like unlv, new mexico & washington
"great education and a program that i could fit in well and be very involved" -tim harrison
tim harrison just got a cal offer
the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world
Francis parker is the very very real deal (academically). Kudos for staff for going out and competing for kids that are the right academic fit.
agreed, francis parker is a strong school academically in the san diego area
gregg gottlieb's original 3 bigs targets for the 2014 class were (in order of priority) thomas welsh (ucla), idrissa diallo (boston college) & evan fitzner from francis parker high school, all 3 recruits with 3.5+ gpas
the cal staff stopped recruiting fitzner after he & family kinda blew off a scheduled summertime unofficial visit to berkeley in order to stay another day at stanford...evan's dad mark played at stanford but an offer from dawkins never materialized...fitzner ended up redshirting (he lacks strength) this last season at st marys
gottlieb then focused his efforts on successfully recruiting jakop poeltl (also an excellent student) from austria (1st discovered by john montgomery) who was a silent commit to cal after his official visit until mike decided to retire at which point he signed with coach k at utah
the california golden bears with huf leading the charge are the early leader for ike anigbogu, a 6'9" 225 lbs 2016 true student athlete with a cal offer from corona centennial, a so cal high school powerhouse...anigbogu is highly athletic with long arms and wide shoulder & is developing rapidly despite being only 16 years old and being relatively new to the game
ike is of nigerian descent and comes from a family that places a strong emphasis upon academic achievement...anigbogu is also interested in stanford & his sister attends ucla on a full academic scholarship
huf is well regarded by both ike & his also cal recruited teammate 2017 big jalen hill
as the bears staff evaluates & prioritizes prospects for the cal's 2016 howlin' at the moon class led by oscar frayer, gpas & test scores will be factors when finalizing actionable offers
the huskies standout is coached by josh giles & will be checking out this bears this week vs usc & ucla
the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public (#3 overall) university in the world (including nigeria)
congrats to ike anigbogu who now has got a cal offer
mcdonalds all american & the #1 rated player in the 2015 class ivan rabb scored 22 points including 2 3 pointers along with 15 dominating boards & 4 blocks as the bishop o'dowd dragons (26-4) potty trained the folsom bulldogs 75-57 in a blowout that had the dragons leading by 24 points after 3 quarters...ivan scored 20 points in the 1st half when the game was on the line & merely facilitated his teammates/sat on the bench for much of the 2nd half (if lou richie's goal was simply to get ivan buckets, he could've scored 50+ points)
young ivee is gonna be deadly serious re: this saturday's nor cal open championship game vs modesto christian...my floor guest for the asu game at haas former cal sharpshooter/mc's head coach richard midgley told me then that he would've preferred to compete for a state championship in his division rather than playing up in the open championship...now midgley's squad is one game away from the state of california open championship game which will be played at haas pavilion on saturday march 28th at 8:00 pm
btw, richard midgley & lou richie are very close friends & talk regularly with each other & theo robertson...ok, maybe not this week
solomon young scored 26 points & christian terrell scored 15 points as the sacramento dragons out fashioned the st mary rams 85-60 in the nor cal d11 playoffs
former cal grad/nba all star with $30+million career nba earnings/current mayor of sacramento kevin johnson dnp for dragons because of important meetings & **** like that
who are these guys on the california golden bears basketball team?
alan crabbe-3.3 gpa@price (currently playing w/portland trail blazers) justin cobbs-3.39 gpa@bishop montgomery richard solomon-3.5 gpa@price jeff powers*-3.6 gpa@delasalle ricky kreklow*-3.72 gpa@rocky bridge david kravish*-4.1 gpa@lee's summit north tyrone wallace-3.5 gpa@bakersfield christian behrens*-3.5 gpa@tahoma jabari bird-3.0+gpa@salesian jordan mathews-3.55 gpa@santa monica sam singer-3.4 gpa@ransom everglades kameron rooks-3.5 gpa@mission hills roger moute a bidias-3.0+ gpa@notre dame kingsley okoroh-3.0+ gpa@westwind prep/findlay prep stephen domingo-3.4 gpa@st ignatius brandon chauca-3.85 gpa@shannon forest christian school cole welle-4.37 gpa@aptos nick hamilton-4.2 gpa@westchester brenden glapion-4.1 gpa@washington dwight tarwater*-3.9 gpa@webb school xavier valdes-4.0 gpa@woodlands davon dillard-3.0+ gpa@our savior new amereican school
*will graduate/graduated from cal joining 2012 grads bak bak, brandon smith & robert thurman
cal fans can expect every player listed above to either leave cal with a degree and/or a nba contract..patrick christopher, justin cobbs & richard solomon all have around one remaining semester of schoolwork necessary to earn their cal degrees...as the wise marco harris once told me, men take care of their business
of the 300+ ncaa d1 bb teams, cal is among the most academically elite programs along with stanford and the ivy leagues most noteably harvard
the above is the MOST IMPORTANT stat sheet in cal basketball
this is the difference between basketball factories that use up & then discard their workers (leaving them unemployable on the streets) and legitimate collegiate institutions of higher learning with an academic purpose...if you go to an academically mediocre school like arizona & get injured you are ******
academic ambition is a beautiful thing, it will open doors in business after your basketball days are over & help you meet the girl of your dreams (and you're not thinking about it now but it will also help you raise intellectually curious children someday)...you can be limitless mentally
so who is the well dressed lady with the stylish handbags & good wheels who sits behind the cal bench at road games?
that would be jennifer hunter who is a dedicated full time learning specialist for the cal basketball program
ms hunter has got a law degree & has work experience in the nba too...she is also enthusiastic with lots of positive energy
jennifer told me prior to the asu game in tempe that this year's cumulative team gpa is around .20 higher than last year's team & that it's approaching 3.0 which would be a remarkable accomplishment at the #3 ranked university in the world
jennifer also told me that EVERY single player on this year's team is working hard & doing very well in the classroom...cal basketball has a highly effective academic support team to ensure that our student athletes academically excel & leave berkeley with a diploma that will open doors in today's fierecely competitive global economy
or you can just go to an academically mediocre school like arizona & play basketball on the basketball court with a basketball & hope you never are gonna get injured or grow old
your basketball days are eventually gonna end, then what?
important notice to all recruits: click the link below & note the global university rankings for all of the colleges that you are seriously considering
you gotta ask yourself, are you going to let basketball define who you are as a person or are you gonna be limitless mentally?
when I think of Cal sports and Cal the University I think excellence
but perhaps the most amazing thing about Cal is that it's in the San Francisco Bay Area in the state of California, probably the most culturally diverse and dynamic place in the world. It's one of the top destinations for tourists, is home to Silicon Valley, the center of innovation, is an economic powerhouse, and has amazing natural beauty with amazing weather
according to my fashionista daughter taylor who is an unrecruited soph in high school, cal's mid season losing streak can be attributed to "to the very ugly and unattractive grey jerseys, the bears play and look so much better in the vibrant blue, stunning yellow and crisp white uniforms which are a lot more fashion forward on point"

I grew up with a view from slightly to the left of that frame (we had a view of the Richmond Bridge as well). You don't miss it until you don't have it. Gosh I miss Berkeley some days.

That is pretty close to the view from the front rooms in Bowles hard….Made it hard to study at times…Some of the fog formations were to die for too.
Seems like we keep going after wings...Dillard, Jolly...this is our strongest spot. We need PGs and Posts.
The wings we have (Bird, Matthews, Domingo, Moute a Bidias) are all in the same class. We'll need replacements. Dillard is 2 years younger, Frayer is 3 years younger. I don't know anything about Jolly.
We are recruiting PGs and posts, but AFAIK none have committed yet.

No, recruiting has focused FAR more on wings than bigs and pgs. And Cal had plenty of wings before Dillard. It is mind boggling.

A) Bigs are more rare B) We have a log jam at Point so guys know that. No one is coming in next year and taking the PG away from Wallace unless they are a top 10 (and maybe better) PG. C) We have ENDLESSLY discussed - we are "all in" on Rabb. You might not like it but I understand what we are doing on that front. D) He told you...you just were not listening - he believed the mistakes he made at the ealier stops was just taking guys - and not keeping slots open. We would have lost at least 2 and maybe more games if he had taken a flyer on project rather than had one to give Tarwater. Expect that pattern to continue until we get the recruiting train rolling.
So here is a fools question. Seems like we keep going after wings...Dillard, Jolly...this is our strongest spot. We need PGs and Posts.
What am I missing?
I'm missing it, too, I guess. How many years has it been now that we haven't signed a big-bodied power forward? Heck, even if he's 6-6/6-7, can we get a banger on our roster? Almost every time I read about one of our new targets, it's another wing.

You honestly believe Cal has a "log jam" at the point? All the other statements don't hold up to much scrutiny either.
coach martin & the staff are relentlessly working to move the cal basketball program on its current upward trajectory & this resulted in his decision for the bears to not compete in the cbi...i respect coach so this decision (if it was up to me, we'd play cal basketball forever) is now ok with me but if the bears are the #1 seed in the west for the ncca tournament next march and coach passes on that too, that's not gonna be ******* acceptable...we compete, baby
the cbi decision can be consolidated down to 3 reasons:
1) academics: the bears schedule this season reflects the importance of achievement in the classroom...during the 1st half of the season, the bears only missed a couple of school days for the games in new york city at madison square garden...so traveling back east this week & missing classes in order to play the northern maine naval academy flying marlins in the cbi really didn't make a lot of sense from an academics perspective at the #1 public university in the world
2) facilities: lindsay's gottlieb's bears are hosting the ncca women's 1st round playoffs at haas pavillion this weekend & the california state high school state basketball championship games will be battled upon newell court march 28th
3) recruiting: the bears are working their azzs off to finish cal's potential diamonds are forever class (2015)
coach martin traveled to oklahoma city to meet with tyson jolly during an in home visit...jolly is underrated because of his health challenge during his junior season & is blowing up right now among high d1 programs...eric bossi has told a cal staffer that jolly will be in the rivals final top 100 rankings when it's released
the diamonds are forever class already has bad azz davon dillard who will add much needed toughness to the wings & former top 100 player stephen domingo who blueshirted this season...domingo is a 3 that can slide to the 4 and impressed with his lethal perimeter shooting skills during practices...stephen still needs to more aggressively pentrate & attack the basket when defenders close out on him in order to diversify his game ala alan crabbe, this will require improvement with his quickness & ball handling skills
at the 4, the bears staff is all in on the #1 ranked player in the 2015 class from oakland, california...they are not gonna recruit a 2 star weakling from the ross school for the arts just to make some dumb azz cal fans happy...btw, big sauce could also play the 4 in tandem with young ivee at the 5, both guys are multiple
at the 5, the bears are targeting top ten in the 2015 class multi skilled caleb swanigan but also have 2 guys with upside in kameron rooks & kingsley okoroh...if the bears played a game tomorrow, the new cored out body kam would probably start at center
at the 1, tyrone wallace has not made a decision yet whether he will wisely finish his cal degree or take his chances in the nba, siberia, the renegade truck stop on the meter frontage road in bakersfield, etc....coach martin loves the work ethics of both sammy singer & brandon chauca...coach wants singer to become a stronger defender, a 6-7 rebounds per game kind of leader & continue the shooting uptick he displayed in the 2nd half of the season...coach wants chauca to become a better on ball defender to prevent other teams going into isolation offensive schemes when he enters the game, dude can flat out shoot the rock
the bears are also well positioned at point guard for the future with derryck thornton (not looking to reclassify to 2015 at this time), jordan ford & devearl ramsey as 2016 prospects along with damari milstead & jade smith as 2017 prospects
You honestly believe Cal has a "log jam" at the point? All the other statements don't hold up to much scrutiny either.
Yeah - if You are elite enough to make a difference you want to be sure that Wallace is gone so you know you have minutes. Given that you then get to a level of kids that are going to compete with Singer. Now they MIGHT end up beating him out for the second option off the bench as a frosh against a Junior but that isn't clear cut/obvious with what is out there. We are actively recruiting kids for 2016 - who would come in as Frosh while Singer is a Senior.

That's not even close to a log jam, especially since the coaches have to recruit with the possibility of Wallace being gone. And with no other player established as a consistent starter (though I like Singer's potential there) it's not even a position with depth right now.

Ughh....they can recruit all they like but the KIDS have to be the ones that say yes. So right now you are a kid who can start on a pac-12 team (cause that is what you want). You think "Well Ty MIGHT leave" but if he doesn't I got at LEAST 2 years there....and then to get gone after 2 I got to beat out ANOTHER senior for the PG position.
Yes, we could get another PG about the same level as Sam and Chauca.....or we could probably get a "project". But we are not solving our PG problems next year with a frosh.

You seem to be completely unaware Cal was recruiting Tyler Dorsey as a pg to start next year. And that Cal came close to getting him.

And yes, getting another pg about the same level Singer is now is a far greater need than another wing for this class. But then again I think Singer's going to be good.
lindsay gottlieb is a charmingly contagious ambassador for the cal women's basketball program...mark my words, they will win a national championship at some point before the curtain drops in berkeley
if you can get to haas pavilion tomorrow at 4:30 pm you will see basketball played without limits by the bears in the 1st round of the ncca tournament led by seniors reshanda gray (the pac 12 mvp) & the undeniably wicked brittany boyd vs the wichita state shockers
next year's team is gonna be potentially led by former montera middle school superstar, asha thomas, a 5'6" dynamo that routinely defies gravity
