I don't know about his salary, but DeCuire was already promoted to Associate Head Coach--that was one of the changes in the staff that I was referring to.

Players who are in good standing academically do not negatively impact APR if they leave before graduating. That's better than minimal...

appreciate the heads up on apr calculations, 71b

does this mean that the transfers of dj seeley, omondi "quick hands" amoke and the return of max to china's national team won't count against the bears apr if they were academically eligible when they left berkeley?...all 3 were ben braun recruits

monty has done a solid job of identifying and recruiting great student athletes and then providing the framework for them to graduate from the #1 public university in the world

anybody know the basketball graduation rates for either kentucky or louisville?

why would marcus lee opt to go across the country and leave his family (mom and brother bryan would need to spend thousands of dollars in order to watch any of his games in person) in order to attend an academically inferior school (with a devalued diploma should he become injured) and pass up on the opportunity to represent the bay area and build something special at cal with his friends?

There is no comparison between Cal and the Kentucky schools academically, as you point out.

Moreover, as for NBA preparation, there is no advantage to the Kentucky programs.

Monty is not just a great coach and teacher, he knows the NBA well, from his two years as head coach of the Warriors. He will help the development of any player, as he has shown over his career. He will help prepare the superior player for the NBA. Calipari or Pitino have less to offer in that regard, in my opinion. And if you are ready for the NBA after your freshman or any other year, the NBA will find you, wherever you attend college.

Kentucky and Louisville offer no advantages over Cal, while Cal has many advantages that these schools do not.

good points

actually kentucky offers one clear advantage over cal: really sweet dorm rooms with single occupancy beds designed for 7 footers and a chef on site right next door to the practice basketball facility

seriously doubt marcus lee is that superficial/easily impressed that he's going to pass up a world class education with a former nba coach and the opportunity to play in front of his mom, older brother bryan, family & friends while representing the bay area alongside his buddies bird & matthews for a medicore education and basically a nice room at the hilton in lexington

I guess there must just be a lot of really dumb basketball players who don't read US News & World Report

Seriously though, anyone who doesn't understand why really talented basketball players pick a school like Kentucky over a school like Cal doesn't understand what really talented basketball players value the most. If you can play basketball, you could play for Siberia State and the NBA will find you and draft you, but most kids are thinking about what gives them the best chance to make the league. Academic rankings of university are way down there on the list of factors they are considering unless they feel like it's not a sure thing that they are NBA material and they need that degree to fall back on.

the part you might be missing golden years is that marcus lee is not a dumbass high school all american basketball player, many have hs gpas in the low to mid 2.00s

coach calipari's top incoming "student athlete" is national top 5 rated 6'10" nerlens noel who needed to pass 2 summer school classes to meet ncaa admittance standards (not kentucky standards which are apparently non-existent) because of his hs gpa of 2.1, no that is not a typo, 2.1 hs gpa

lee has an impressive 3.2 hs gpa and considered duke

odds:

lee getting injured in college thereby derailing his basketball career and causing him to need to rely upon his college diploma-5 to 10%

lee becoming financially wealthy with a cal degree-70-80%

lee becoming an asst manager at subway with a kentucky degree-70-80%

lee getting recruited over by a lottery type player like nerlens noel during the next 2-3 years at kentucky (calipari is a relentless recruiter/salesman)-30%-40%

lee starting for the bears from day one/playing at least 30-35 minutes per game-95%

lee's mom and brother bryan and family and lifelong coaches being able to afford to see more than 4 of his games in person a year (see my earlier post on travel costs to lexington)-10%

lee's mom and brother bryan and family being able to attend all of his home games at haas and other bay area games (stanford, etc.)-100%

lee's odds of playing with mcdonald all americans (that he has never played with) at kentucky that will freely pass him the ball-50%

lee's odds of his friends bird and matthews passing him the ball-90%

lee's odds of enjoying half the year of absolutely humid and suffocating hellish hot weather (mid march thru mid september) in lexington-25%

do you disagree?

Well said!

And in response to GoldenYears, it is not obvious that chances of making the NBA by playing for Kentucky are better than by playing for the Bears, or for that matter, almost any other school.

A good case can be made that playing for the Bears enhances Lee's NBA chances, because Monty is a better coach/teacher than Calipari.

I disagree only with Monty having the advantage with the NBA. Calipari and Petino both coached in the NBA. All three had zero success. I love how Monty is building this team for long term, sustainable success.

I am aware of what you say about these coaches' NBA experience.

I believe Monty is a better teacher of basketball and life in general than the other two.

If Lee were my son I would counsel him that Monty and Cal offer the most.

kentucky's big blue madness is apparently good times for everyone...coach calipari is a great speaker!

so how much would it cost marcus lee' mom, older brother bryan, another family member and wille beamon to accompany marcus on his official visit to scenic lexington on october12-14th?

checking travelocity, the cheapest flights from oakland to lexington are on delta for $620 per person

leave the lee's antioch home on friday october 12th at 4:00 am in order to check in at the oakland airport by 4:30 am (90 minutes before the 6:00 am delta departure)

there are no direct or even 1 stop flights from oakland to lexington so the 6:00 am flight will stop in los angeles and atlanta and arrive in scenic lexington at 6:55 pm

rent an enterprise suv (lexington car rental rates are quite inexpensive) so the total cost for the rental including taxes and one gasoline refill will be $125

check into the doubletree hotel for $179 per room per night...the cost of the 2 rooms for 2 nights will be $780

count on $25 per day per person for food and drinks

check out of the doubletree on sunday october 14th by 4:00 am in order to return the rental and check in for the 6:00 am delta flights back to oakland

delta stops in atlanta and salt lake city and arrive back into oakland at 12:12 pm

pay $25 for oakland airport parking and drive home to antioch

total cost of trip: around $3,700 plus a really reliable alarm clock

Monty needs to do whatever he can to prevent Lee from taking that trip to Lexington. The odds of Lee choosing Cal after experiencing Kentucky in person are not good.

Kentucky is the #1 basketball program in college basketball. Their fans are beyond passionate and fill their incredible arena every game. Every game is nationally televised and the team is discussed ad naseum by hoops pundits year around. The chance to play for a national championship there is tremendous. Calipari's track record at preparing talent for the NBA is nearly unmatched.

Let's be honest here. Cal is a great choice for Lee and his family when it comes to academics, being close to home and playing with friends. In terms of basketball, Kentucky is #1 by a mile.

I believe Lee can stay here, help make Cal a national power and become an NBA lottery pick. I hope he does.

They key is to get him to decide before getting on the plane to Kentucky. Powe, Kidd and virtually every other prep hoops star who decides to stay home do so before taking an official trip to the national powers. At 17 years old, the impression that can be made by the Wildcats will be very, very hard to turn down.

All due respect CHF, I don't see that happening. His recruitment has been closely managed by his family (brother it appears) and the fact that he trimmed his list down to 3 schools and appears ready to visit each, means he'll take the visit - which he should- and then decide.

We all know that UK has the #1 hoops brand in college basketball right now. The factors that I believe are in our favor are: more first year playing time, proximity to family and given that he is likely a 2 year player in college, better development over that period as a result of Cal needing him on the floor sooner than UK does.

I have it 65/35 Cal at this point. :Monty

We cannot "win" by preventing a kid from taking a recruiting trip. What we need to do is help him understand why Cal is still the better option, even if he takes the trip, even from a basketball standpoint (be a star and put up good numbers for the scouts versus being a cog in the machine).

Explain that he will get to the NBA no matter what and will have years of 5 star hotels and groupies to look forward to if that is what he wants, but he won't have the chance to be a college student, meeting other college students in a normal dorm, where many people will relate to him as a person and won't care that he plays basketball, ever again. Let Carl Bird (as a fellow Oakland Soldiers parent) talk with him and his parents--you see the decision his son made.

I would recommend he do take trips (non local) to those top on his short list as the process only occurs one time in his life... To make the best selection on one of his most important decision in his relatively young life, proceed with the process with due diligence. If he does not, there can be the endless "what if" questions that may linger. Sure, after an extensive evaluation of his top candidates, Cal is on top of his list, we all hope he then chooses Cal to attend... but that is because he feels that Cal program/university is the best path for him to take when all variables (that are important to him) are taken into consideration.

Very, very few prep hoops stars stay home after taking an official to a national power. Call me selfish but I want him at Cal thus I would prefer that he not take the trip and instead verbal to the Bears.

Try and think of a recruit Cal landed, a top flight local recruit, that took an official to a power program and still ended up in Berkeley. Not sure it has ever happened.

All we can really do is sit tight and hope for the best.

But I agree, his trip to Kentucky doesn't inspire confidence in me. He's a young kid and 17-year-olds tend to be impressionable. Coach Cal is slick--he's bar none the best salesman in basketball. He could sell ice to an Eskimo. Kentucky is literally an NBA farm team and they have all the bells and whistles that come with that distinction.

Key question: does a prospect become a better NBA prospect by:
1) Coaching of the game (Monty vs. Calipari)
2) Banging against higher quality players in practice (teammates)
3) Being THE MAN in games and getting lots of opportunities to improve one's game there?

If Lee goes to UK, maybe all practice time, little game time.
If Lee goes to Cal, maybe all game experience, lesser practice competition.

Which is better NBA prep?

My take?
How many college bench players became NBA guys? If you can't break into the starting UK lineup, you probably aren't going NBA - then all you have left is UK degree and all that practice time. If you go Cal - maybe you become NBA, maybe not, but at least you have the Cal degree and all those fun games under your belt. I'd take one in the hand, Cal.

calipari's plan for the lee family=flat screen tv

look at a map of the united states

lexington is centrally located to the south, midwest and east coast

it is either a long car drive and/or short flight for 11 of the wildcat's 12 scholly players

kyle wiltjer from oregon is the only wildcat player from the western half of the united states

there's a reason there are NO players from california on the kentucky roster

interesting to note that the premiere kentucky fan site/message board, catsillustrated.com, has ZERO threads about marcus lee and virtaully no mentions of his recruitment

the passionate and knowledgeable kentucky fans only reference to lee is as the projected 3rd string pf (competing with current wildcat commit derek willis for that slot) for 2013 behind starter kyle wiltjer and likely future kentucky commit julius randle who is higher rated (considered the best player for the 2013 class) and currently bigger (6'9", 240 pounds) than lee

reality:

marcus lee is just another recruit for the kentucky basketball prgram, may never start a game and offers quality depth at pf

marcus lee is an essential recruit for cal's monster class and a starter from day one

Correct. If a player leaves school while in good academic standing, he does not negatively impact the APR.

Also, the APR for the most recent year at KY was 963. For the same period, the APR at Cal was 950. KY has a built-in advantage, they only need to keep guys academically eligible for a year (before the player goes pro), Cal has to keep their players academically eligible for 3 or 4 years... :-)

the current starter at pf for the wildcats is soph kyle wiltjer

wiltjer is not projected to be drafted in 2013 according to the mock nba drafts at cbs sports, nbadraft.net and usa today's draftexpress.com

wiltjer will therefore return to lexington for his jr and perhaps his sr season too

wiltjer will likely need to compete for pt with the number #1 player in the nation in julius randle

article at cats.illustrated.com quotes randle as follows:

"Coach Cal is Coach Cal. He came in and he's one of coolest coaches out there. He was just himself. He wants me to come in and be the top draft pick."

tampa_cat54 says both the harrison twins and randle are locks to kentucky and that randle may have given calipari a silent verbal on his visit to lexington

tilde says "Cal's philosphy has always been to take the best players he can get, put them on the floor, and make it work. That being said, I think that he wants Gordon and Randle to defend the 4 and 5 respectively. My gut feeling is that Gordon is more a long shot that anyone else we're recruiting and Marcus Lee is the back up option."

Cals Kingdom8 says "Seeing how he cut Louisville because they recently received a commit from another 4/5, has Cal stressed the importance of Randle being an option as well? I know both can and would play at the same time, but just wondering if anyone thinks the kid would shy away from other superstars and a lack of pt?"

no doubt calipari is a relentless recruiter and is already targeting the top 2 pfs for the 2014 class

lee can't make the nba playing 5 minutes a game even on a potential national championship team with passionate fans at kentucky

I think he will be in rotation, starting at PF... he averaged 11 mpg as freshman with 6 players ahead of him in rotation all off to the NBA. Granted, Ky has a strong incoming freshman class (as always)... but I expect him to be 20 plus mpg this year...

If Julius Randle shows up for the 2013/14 year, yes, he will slot in at the 4, which then Wiltjer has to move over to the 5 or becomes the backup 4... here is summer vid of Randle.. as one of the top 3 2013's:

my take on singer's early september final 6 list is as follows:

nc state-received a commit from 5 star pg anthony barber in mid september

richmond and davidson-good (not elite) academic schools in mid major conferences with scenic and small campuses...sam's parents strongly emphasize academics...likely fall back choices for singer

harvard-good mid major team with freezing winters/humid summers and elite academics (#1 university in the world)...below average athletic facilities...recent athletic cheating scandal not a plus...seriously fugly (but smart) girls

cal-best combination of elite academics (haas business school is the #1 undergrad biz school in the us & cal is the #1 public university in the world) and athletics (pac 12 with ucla, arizona, washington, stanford, etc.)...singer has commented on the terrific bay area weather after both of his unofficial visits...chance to pawn dawkins, the allen brothers and the cards twice a year...as sam is interested in coaching, monty is along with coach k is among the very best in the profession (even amaker would not disagree with this statement)...new $150m student athlete high performance center is among the best in the nation

I think he will be in rotation, starting at PF... he averaged 11 mpg as freshman with 6 players ahead of him in rotation all off to the NBA. Granted, Ky has a strong incoming freshman class (as always)... but I expect him to be 20 plus mpg this year...

wiltjer's 2013 pt will likely be 15-20 mpg max (and could potentially be as low as 5-10 mpg) with #1 pf in the nation julius randle's likely arrival next fall

jason jordan, the usa today writer who extensively covered randle's in home visits, just predicted on ksr radio station randle to kentucky...several wildcat sources have indicated randle is likely a silent commit to calilpari

go wildcats!
