j bird scores 18 pts (9 fgs) in tonight's salesian (6-1) victory over moreau catholic 65-44

this sets up tomorrow's night 7:30 pm tilt between norcal's 2 all americans jabari bird vs aaron gordon (archbishop mitty)...if you live in the bay area and are only going to attend 1 hs game this year, this might be your best option (grab a top dog after the cal game and head on over or better yet carpool with monty & decuire)

with monty sr sitting courtside at cal state east bay tonight, salesian hs under the masterful coaching of hc (and former cal grad) bill mellis kicked azz on archbishop mitty in a surprising 72-51 blowout with the pride leading by as much as 30 in the 4th quarter

all american #23 jabari bird outplayed fellow all american #32 aaron gordon in nor cal's best match up of the season (until the playoffs)

jb had 19 pts (including a perfect 6-6 fts, 1 3-pter) and 9 boards along with an intense defensive effort while ag had 18 pts (with a clunky 1-4 fts, 0 3-pter) and 10 boards and a vague interest in team defense

playing d the entire game>throwing down a helicopter highlight reel dunk
winning>losing

Interesting, thanks, Shocky1.

As stats of JB and AG were similar, it would be good if you could give more detail.

The Bird and Gordon matchup was a push. Salesian was the quicker, deeper team and penetrated at will. If I was Mitty's coach, I would have played more zone and put the big guy closer to the hoop, instead of guarding Bird.

Gordon is an impressive 6'8", with good handles for a big guy and fast too. His man to man defense is underrated....Salesian went to Bird early and he could not shake Gordon, forcing Bird into a turnover or two. Mitty would have been better served if they kept Gordon near the basket, both on offense and defense.

Bird is silky smooth. Picked up a loose ball, perhaps stealing it from Gordon underneath, went coast to coast and finished with a nice dunk just ahead of Gordon. Nice and easy....Bird just kind of glided through the air and boom...slammed it home. He had another nice dunk where it seemed like he hung in the air, pulled the ball back while waiting for all the hands to clear and then two handed it through the hoop.

He showed his range, hitting a three from the corner and is very good free throw shooter....I believe 8-8 from the line. Can't wait to see Bird at Cal next season.

I also saw Mike Phelps, one of the Bay Area's finest high school BB coaches, at the game. He was in a wheelchair.

great players impose their will upon the game

for this one game (which does not define ag), he played in spurts (an all american player of his length should have at least 15+ boards against hs competition if they play with a relentless passion) and seemed to accept the blowout in the 2nd half

jyamada, do you feel that ag brought it in the 2nd half?

bringing it every game in this season, jordan matthews popped (sp?) in 21 pts yesterday as santa monica went on the road to beat la jolla country day 60-40

In 2nd half, Gordon was PG bringing up ball... this was coaches decision....as Mitty came into 2nd half 10 down, but were 20 down 3 minutes into 3rd. (Gordon handles the ball very good for being 6 8 power forward/center)

As good as Gordon is, no need for him to be PG bringing ball up, but would iso him on low block without weak side help by adding in O schemes to pick and roll and moving 4 from weak side block up to weak side wing/foul line area to get weak side help out of area.

Bird did not outplay Gordon, they are both very good..and one on one, Gordon was tough on Bird to create space.. (early on in game, Bird was 0 for 2, with 2 TO due to Gordon's D, but settled down after 4 or 5 minutes into game)
Since Bird is a wing, Gordon guarding Bird, took Gordon away from paint.. would have taken Gordon off Bird and have him guard the 4 and roam the paint preventing Salesian's guards from having their way in the paint.

Gordon sounds like his future in the NBA is at SF, while Bird is a 2. Their game is different, and although they matched up against each other at times, it was more about putting your best athlete on the other team's best athlete.

The fact that the game was a blow out means that it's really hard to compare them in this game. I would say that we've seen enough of both to say they will be very good college players.

If we are only going to sign one of the two, I would pick Bird every time. I'm not saying that Bird is the better basketball player. I really don't know. There are a lot of factors in my view.

For anyone who might think this is a dis on Gordon, it is not. He's probably the best player coming out of San Jose in decades. Also, anyone who thinks we have a shot at Gordon signing with Cal....I'd would just say that we don't, although maybe we do have a 1-1/2% shot.

I certainly don't like the prospect of facing him in conference, if he decides to go to UW or AZ.

100% agreed ar is playing exceptionally well as a jr & 2014 pg commit to the bears

when posters mention some random pg that monty and co should be recruiting, hopefully they realize they the bears already have a potential all american (mickey d candidate for next season) commit who can already fill it up for 30 pts (as only a jr and also feeding a sr teammate who is heading to colorado next season) and is also a terrific student athlete (3.8 gpa)

as a "listed" 6' & 170 lbs, ar's d and finishing around the basket would benefit from his building his body to a legit 185 lbs for his arrival to berkeley and d1 pounding

unfortunately ar's lincoln squad lost to army/navy hs (carlsbad) 74-68 in the torrey pines classic opening round

zero % chance=ar missing the freezing azz winters in seattle when he heads to nor cal

all american jabari bird scored 23 pts in leading salesian to a 58-46 win over taft in the tpc

8-11 fgs (no forced shots)
1-2 3 pters
4-4 fts (silky stroke)
7 boards
only 1 turnover (stripped in the lane)
jumped ball & won opening tip

most impressively is jb's maturity in allowing the game to come to him...jb will seamlessly complement obama, cobb salad, doc kravish and solo in the starting line with t-wall as the energy 6th man during what will potentially be an epic 2013 bears bb team

would someone please post photos of both the pac 12 current leading scorer at 20.4 ppg (only player over 20 pts) & the current president of the united states?

photos that preferably include their alferd e. neuman ears, what me worry?

a healthier jordan matthew scored 18 pts as santa monica squeaked by rancho verde (moreno valley) 46-42 in the oaks christian holiday hardwood tnt

at the tpc in san diego the del fuego amhaad rorie sizzled for 29 pts as lincoln outscored long beach jordan 80-77 in ot

kameron rooks pounded it inside for 22 pts as mission hills beat ocean view 61-54 also at the tpc
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
kameron rooks was the game's leading scorer with 21 pts in the paint as mission hills beat chino hills in a 58-57 thrillah at the tpc

kr may decide in the next week:

az-dad played there, fans yelled his named a lot at the florida game
cal-favorite campus & best academics
uw-very cold but liked romar personally showing him around (instead of assts)

the rest of the future bears were unfortunately in semi-hibernation mode sat:

sam singer dnp as ransom everglades flew 2000 miles to lose in phx at the cactus jam invt tnt to cedar park christian 64-50...ss's teammate alonzo mourning III (a jr, 6'7", 195 lbs) chipped in with 10 pts...the raiders beat medicine hat alberta fri apparently in a hs bb game (and not a fish spearing contest) 70-25

amhaad rorie was held to 15 pts as lincoln beat taft (and the biggest gunner in north america, yanku-turkish descent) 71-61 at the tpc

jabari bird after scoring 8 pts (4 fgs) in salesian's 56-37 victory against parker (san diego) friday night could only generate 7 pts (1 fg, 1 3 pter and 2-3 fts) in his team's 56-42 loss saturday to st augustine at the tpc...like a young crabbe, jb will need to learn to take it to the basket to better set up his outside shooting and also earn more fts

jordan matthews limited himself to 12 pts as he sat for 8 minutes in the 2nd half after picking up his 3rd personal foul and later fouled out in santa monica's 60-56 win over royal at the oaks christian tnt

will be interesting to see how these future bears respond to today's adversity & tournament (4 games in a row, nba like schedule)/travel fatigue in tomorrow's games...

the bear would not quite, the bear would not die

sat courtside tonight at haas w/mrs shocky1 (my 1st wife)...pretty obvious bears need their current bigs to step it up a notch and to recruit future talent at pf and c...pt is clearly available for both spots (and cheerleaders too)

kameron rooks scored 15 pts and made the all tnt team at the tpc as mission hills knocked off mesa 60-53 to win the american division...kr played tough d on mesa's 6'10" center isaac allen

freshman top 5 player ivan rabb scored 30 pts to lead bod to a 66-62 victory over francis parker (san diego) at the tpc

francis parker was led by 6'9", 210 lbs highly skilled big man (ryan anderston playing style) 2014 jr evan fitzner who scored 21 pts...fitzner was offered by cal on wed and also has early offers from colorado, oregon state, new mexico, etc. and is a solid 3.00 gpa...fitzner's dad mark played bb at stanford and raised his son a huge cardinals fan so it will be important for monty sr to personally take the lead in fitzner's recruitment as the family is well aware of his coaching achievements on the farm...monty sr needs to get more involved: hard working asst coach gottlieb offered ef in person and decuire showed ef & family around the berkeley campus this summer...come on, mr cranky pants!

amhaad rorie played a strong 4th game in a row scoring 24 pts as lincoln blew by st johns 80-60 at the tpc

jabari bird contributed 18 pts as salesian avenged their 2011 state championship loss to winward with tonight's 80-65 victory over winward at the tpc

jordan matthews rolled up 32 pts but santa monica (11-4) lost in the finals of the christian oaks tnt to corona centennial 80-69

sam singer dnp in ransom everglades 50-48 squeaker over scottsdale christian at the cactus jam invt in phx

KABOOM...kameron rooks is a bear!

the deadly 2013 golden bears law firm class is now expanded to:

bird, matthews, singer & (k)rooks

all are terrific student athletes and good cal fits:
bird-3.00+ gpa
matthews-3.55 gpa
singer-3.4 gpa (at an elite school academically=3.8-3.9 @ cal public hs gpa)
rooks-3.5 gpa

listening to their interviews, one cannot but notice but well spoken but also humble these future bears present themselves (homework assignment: listen to the 2012 ucla class interviews for comparison purposes), that's great parenting (thx moms)

kr's mission hills hs asst coach and aau gamepoint hc anthony bolton (hopefully no relationship to michael) credits gottlieb, monty jr and travis for building solid trustworthy relationships partcularly in the last month...it is an impressive recruiting croup to beat out nationally ranked arizona, uconn, washington & asu

as a 7'3/4" (per dad sean) with soft hands and the ability to shoot with either hand (a rare skill among hs bigs), k rook's next big challenge after the hs postseason will be to enroll at cal for summer bridge and start relentlessly working at cal's premiere facilities to transform his body into a sleeker and more athletic version...mom might also want to start up the lean cuisine meals too asap

part of the optimistic evaluation of this potentially program changing class is that these players upside is enhanced by their dad's bb acumen:
carl bird-former bears 1976 co mvp with 15.2 ppg (and 80% fts)
phil matthews-former usf hc now ucla asst coach (and also dad to johah, fr stud at santa monica hs)
sean rooks-30th pick in the draft and 12 year nba veteran & currently coaching with phx suns development squad
if anyone has any bb info about sam singer's dad, please send me a prvt msg

in addition to monty sr's recognized coaching abilities, these players' dads and families can continue to coach up their sons

I don't know if Gordon brought it in the second half but my concern was that Bird couldn't shake Gordon on a couple of one on one situations to start the contest. This is a testament to Gordon's quickness and athleticism and why he's ranked as a top ten national recruit. Maybe it's nothing to be worried about but I was kind of expecting Bird to be able to take a bigger man off the dribble. I can see a smaller man staying with Bird and Bird shooting over him but Gordon was just as quick as Bird and Bird could not shoot over Gordon. In any event, I saw a lot of good things from Bird.....he can shoot free throws, can hit the open man, has range beyond the 3 point line, great in transition and will pick up a lot of garbage rebounds/points.

You have to take HS stats with a grain of salt... as 95% of the players are not going on to play D1 ball. A better indicator of how a player will do in D1 is their spring/summer Nike League AAU stats... (40 team league, 20 plus games over course of 2 months and a great majority of the players go on to D1)

important to note that the 2013 monster class of bird, matthews, singer & (k)rooks along with 2014 commit distributor/scorer rorie all play on winning hs basketball teams...elite players put their teams on their backs and will them to wins even when things get challenging (road fatigue, bad calls by the refs, shot not falling, etc.) without drama

despite his unselfish play, sam's high output for this season is 51 pts on the road against terra environmental

how good is the level of competition for ransom everglades?

re plays 4a ball and is currently ranked #59 in florida...the only bigtime oponent the have played this season is south miami (8a ball and ranked #12 in florida) who defeated the raiders 62-42

ss's style can perhaps be compared to ricky kreklow (pre injuries when he was named mr basketball in missouri) in that he can shoot lights out from the perimeter, is a heady passer and hustles on d despite average footspeed...the key for sam will be to arrive in berkelely as early as possible for summer bridge in order to play in the sf pro am league to gain experience playing with longer and quicker athletes at a run & gun pace

pretty clear kr needs to continue to lose some of his 280 lbs before entering cal's summer bridge & conditioning program...

Feed him all he wants. He's 6'11"... no, now he's 7'0"... oops, now 7'1"...

When he stops growing we can work on getting his body molded into a lean, mean rebound and scoring machine.

r90-good pt about kr's height...7'3" would definitely work for monty & co.

but we can't wait for even summer bridge for kr to improve his physique & conditioning...needs to start happening NOW

sm told kr that he wanted to redshirt him next year...the bears do not have that luxury with our bigs

lean cuisine dinner & a few sprints in the park tonight with mom & dad...just sayin'
