Two friends of mine just got back from 14 days at St Andrews, playing all the courses there. Temps mostly in the 80's, and humid. The beaches were full, the courses not so full. The course management was worried enough that they sent marshals out bringing water to the golfers throughout the midday. Wear a cap. Stay hydrated.

hey sfcity, don't know how to break this to you but your 2 buddies just spent the last 14 days in las vegas mostly hanging out at the topless pool bars...temps in the high 80s at nite & definitely important to stay hydrated

i'm at the glasgow airport right now after a 10 day, 14 walking rounds boondoggle thru scotland...temps have been in the low 60s with only a few light showers & the courses are busy as the global economy rebounds

not sure why they didn't invite you to vegas...but they ain't in scotland

who is cal's leading career 3 pt% shooter?

theo robertson shot an amazing .487% during the 2008 season & a bears record setting .440% for his career

as a pt of comparison, portland trail blazers sharpshooter alan crabbe shot .348% last season & the bears an abysmal .302%

Bird can make threes, and so can Sam Singer. Justin Cobbs was a three point threat in his sophomore year, shooting threes at a 0.413 clip, but not so good last year. Hopefully, this season he will revert back to his former 40+% level. We could be loaded with three point shooters.

Mathews prep record indicated he was a skilled guard, who was a dangerous shooter-scorer. With the addition of Singer, Bird and Mathews, the Bears have dramatically improved their scoring capability.

Does anyone have access to the high school senior year percentages of Mathews, Bird, Singer, and Kreklow?

That might give us some foreshadowing of what they might do in the coming season.

I throw Kreklow in there, since he has not played much in college, so his rather poor 3-point percentages at Cal and Missouri may be a bad sample of what he can do...

Not forgetting Ricky. Just adding some names to Theo's list of three point shooters. And after seeing Jabari knock down threes last night in the SF pro Am Championships, I feel even more confident that 3 point shooting will be a strength of this year's Cal team.

It's looking like Solomon, Johnson, Kravish and Rooks will have room to operate in the paint on offense, which will open the court for lane penetration. Unlike recent years, Cal may have a variety of capable shooter -scorers that will give Monty multiple ways to attack the defense. That prospect underscores the need for the Bears to land a couple of skilled bigs to continue that scheme.

shockster opinion: welsh is absolutely blowing up this summer & is the fastest rising big man on the west coast...as an elite student, i doubt he seriously considers schools with less than stellar academic reputations

stanford (dawkins will likely be fired after 2014) & usc (will the trojans guards share the ball like smooth facilitator/distributor amhaad rorie?) are his favorites along with the bears...cal offers the best combination of elite academics & a double post system that will showcase welsh's soft touch & hustle around the basket

with no pgs on the roster for 2014, the bruins pg recruiting under alford is going nowhere fast

***amhaad rorie-commit to cal
***parker jackson-cartwright-commit to arizona
***josh perkins-parted ways with ucla today, heavy gonzaga lean (hc mark few attended all of his aau games this summer in person)
***robert cartwright-ignored by alford until too late, now waiting on stanford acceptance
***quentin snider-onetime louisville commit is an extreme ucla longshot thats indicated he's likely to stay close to home (ky)
***jordan mclaughlin-bruins safety dance pg is now a san diego state lean w/usc a close 2nd

apparently alford's riveting stories of playing under bobby knight 100 yrs ago isn't resonating very well with most 17 yr old recruits

hey but apparently there's a 5'7" pg at santa barbara cc that is very interested in starting for the bruins at pg in 2014...

Apparently, Alford thinks his son Bryce is UCLA's PG of the future and it wouldn't surprise me if that's had an effect on the 2014 PG recruiting. I haven't seen Bryce play, so I have no opinion. Steve better hope his son is the PG version of Doug McDermott.

justin labagh, the winningiest hc in college bb history at 87.6%, once told me that for his sfcc teams "20 wins come between march and september"

so who is the most important (and also least appreciated) person in the bears basketball program during the summer?

that would be scott thom, the bb s&c coach & former bb hc at vintage hs in napa for 7 yrs

scott thom told me "this summer has been filled with non stop getting after it in the haas wt rm with my basketball players...we have been lifting 4 days a week and conditioning 2 days a week for the past 8 weeks...they'be been working tremendously hard and if i had to give a mvp, i'd give it to all of them!"

"the bigs david and rich have been using these past weeks to continue to build muscle and improve lateral quickness as well as improved overall conditioning...for rooks it was very different as he came into summer workouts a little out of shape and with no real background on the type of workouts we do...his workouts were geared towards keeping his heart rate up and working on his overall body mechanics to help build a base of conditioning, they were brutal but he got after it everday with a smile on his face!...once the base was set then i started increasing the weights and strength building exercises...he went from 272 to 257 by the time he left for home...david is now a solid 230 and rich a solid 240, both up 10 lbs since last season"

scott thom=100% focused energy

This is great news. The individual effort, and the results, Thom has reported is impressive for each of the freshmen. Moreover, the camaraderie and teambuilding this endeavor is developing with this talented class may be as important to Cal basketball as the strength and conditioning endeavor, itself.
