if cal wasn't the #1 ranked public university in the world with challenging academics for our student athletes, this is what my recommended coaching staff would look like...all of them would be tremendous recruiters

mack the truck, shaka smart, chaka kahn, mark few, mark more, the miller bros, the marshall plan & kickin' josh pasternack (54-60 as a hc at new orleans) have all built their reps by recuiting dumb azz 2.5 gpa ballers & winning games

the last half a century of cal bb has proven that recruiting/retaining low gpa players will not be a successful strategy in berkeley

the skillset for the next bears staff should include:
*****high character individuals with proven track records of doing things the right way
*****successful recruiters who understand the academic challenges at cal & can relentlessly identify, recruit & retain true student athletes
*****off the charts energy...college bb coaching with its 100+ aau/hs games a yr targeting recruits is best suited to youthful candidates...nobody over 50 with an aarp card is an ideal candidate
*****style of play...bears need to play more up tempo to attract elite players & sell tixs
*****charismatic

with this in mind, my recommended cal bb staff includes:

*****theo robertson, assistant coach

Shocky, just curious, why would you replace a veteran assistant in Gottlieb with Labagh? For what it's worth, I saw that Gottlieb is talking with Bruce Pearl at Auburn about an assistant coach position.

seattle, i hold greg gottlieb in the highest regards & my recommended staff includes room for him...btw, auburn went in another direction for their staff

justin labagh's track record at ccsf is off the charts, he is as good a recruiter as anybody on the west coast with his personality & hs/aau relationships & he's sent/academically prepared more players for full rides to 4 yr schools than any other jc coach in california...as a former bears walk on, he gets cal

it should also be mentioned that the cal staff met with labagh earlier this season to share ideas about ways to increase tempo as justin's ccsf rams are annually one of the highest scoring teams in nation with their 40 minutes of hell pace

it is mind boggling to me that sandy barbour has never reached out to labagh & made an effort to sit down with him during her tenure as ad...that is ad malpractice imo to not know any potential future coaches with a track record like labagh for the revenue generating sports of basketball & football

barbour does reach out to pick the brain of former new zealander sean marks who is being groomed to be san antonio's next general manager...it is my understanding that she's never asked marks re: his interest in the position instead relying upon expensive national search consulting firms that are usually comprised of 60 yr old white former athletic directors & their incestuous small circle of bb coaches which does not include someone like td who phil mathews thinks is the next shaka smart

the reason i am recommending the above trio of td, labagh & theo is also related to coaching staff chemistry...this yr's staff, other than mike, are all too much alike: quiet intense personalities...during the long college bb season, they work hard & grind but lost this team for a stretch late in the season as the mood was suffocating & not fun

bb is a game that should be fun to play like little kids playing basketball without a care in the world

justin labagh's easygoing & charismatic personality would balance out the staff's personalities...i spoke with td's dad at the washington game in seattle & he agreed with me that if td becomes cal's next hc, it will be important for him to seek a coaching staff that complements out his outwardly quiet demeanor...btw, td's dad is as loud & fiery as me, for all i know we might be related

Thanks, Shocky. Interesting stuff. Appreciate the insight. It worries the hell out of me that Sandy relies on this search firm with an old school network and that this hiring is taking so long. It's almost like they are over analyzing the situation and looking for reasons not to hire DeCuire.

This is one of your better posts.

It is peculiar how an older white woman would be figuring out how to lead young black men. It's something the opposite of Michael Jackson-Liz Taylor.

I didn't know Justin Labagh ran an up tempo offense. He is now my favorite candidate, per my thread on "the type of coach I'd like."

What's jonmonty looking at next?
Why do you favor Theo? Love the guy, but what has he done as part of the staff?

Gosh, it's been 11 days since since Montgomery announced he was retiring.
Why aren't we done hiring a search firm, identifying candidates, checking interest, setting up interviews, interviewing, narrowing field, having second interviews, making decision, getting decision approved.:sarc:

Actually, I'm serious. Sandy supposedly had 2nd round interviews earlier this week (Monday). It doesn't take that long to hire someone when there are 3-5 candidates and one is internal.

In the attempt at total secrecy it seems our fearless leaders are allowing for a lot of unneeded anxiety.
Be in control of the process, especially in regards to the current players, recruits and their families.
Very strange that Cal continues to do things the old conservative way.
Be bold, visionary and in control of this search/hire.
Or at least create perception that you are!
I would love to see a scenario like Shocky presents.
A young group with huge upside, they would have a lot of naysayers and an opportunity to prove a lot of people wrong.
Engage the talent we have in professional and college basketball as well as the business world.
There is no reason the #1 University in the world should ever be perceived as bumbling along.
Get this done and get it done right fearless leaders

I would totally love if Cal's next coaching staff was this group, lead by Travis Decuire. In fact, I'd immediately buy 4 season tickets in support if this happens.

Besides Virginia's Bennent and Utah's Coach K, there would be few (realistic) coaching staffs I'd prefer

Cal needs to decide to go with traditional thinking, take the safe route, and settle for 17th best (because we ain't getting Few, so we'd have to go with our 17th next best option). This approach will also immediately throw us into crisis mode if current or entering players checkout.

...or be bold, build a coaching staff and a playing style that players would trust, relate to, and play their hearts out for. Recruits would flock because of their recruiting approach built on trust relationships but also because word will quickly get out on the street, from current players and a connected network of HS/AAU coaches

This second approach would not be settling. It would be breaking out, aggressive and give notice that this is the NEW Cal

This would build a strong BRAND that differentiates itself and could get Cal where everyone wants to go

Sold and really well articulated! You know what could be fun - if the staff was all under 45 - market it as "youngbloods" - and have the coaches come out and actually have fun with that. Seriously - how cool would it be to see Theo raining down threes ;-)

Heck - pay Pepsi to let us use the theme music ;-) Crowd would LOVE IT.
Probably not my BEST marketing idea but hey, it is a friday ;-)

I think those of us supporting DeCuire here can seen the potential for great things and that the downside risk is really no different than with any of the other realistic candidates.

I think we can also see the potentially disastrous message that passing over an internal AA candidate in favor of a similarly qualified white candidate from a competitor would send to current players and recruits.

What I can't understand is how the Pasternack camp can't see these things, and that deeply concerns me both now and going forward.

Shocky / Anyone else who knows: For the guys that have now come and gone under Monty, which ones have graduated, and which ones have not?

Jorge Gutierrez - graduated?
Brandon Smith - graduated?
Bak Bak - graduated?
Markhuri Sanders-Frison - graduated?
Robert Thurman - graduated?
Justin Cobbs - will graduate?
Emerson Murray - transferred
Allen Crabbe - NBA draft
Alex Rossi - transferred
Richard Solomon - will graduate?
Gary Franklin - transferred
Jeff Powers - will graduate?
Kaileb Rodriguez - transferred
Kahlil Johnson - transferred

I think all of the guys with question marks have graduated (or will graduate, in the case of our three seniors), but is that correct?

Of the guys that transferred, were any not in good academic standing? I think all of those transfers were basketball/health related, but were any of those guys also academic risks?

of the 300+ ncaa d1 bb teams, cal is among the most academically elite programs along with duke, stanford, the ivy leagues & the service academies

the above is the MOST IMPORTANT stat sheet in cal basketball

cal family#
50 yr decision#

this is the difference between basketball factories that use up & then discard their workers (leaving them unemployable on the streets) and legitimate collegiate instituions of higher learning with an academic purpose

*****************************************************

mike montgomery noted today at his press conference that travis decuire has been the key to turning around the "academic thing" at cal...td has been responsible for hiring the learning specialists and "making sure that are kids are in a position to graduate"

the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world

******************************************************

nicky d & his crew (john wilton & sandy barbour) are doing their due diligence with the cal bb hc national search

any coach who has led his team to sweet sixteen appearances should be fully evaluated

the following should be a KEY selection tool for evaluating xavier's chris mack:

*****chris mack should provide the selection committee a complete listing like the one above with the hs gpas of all of his current players

if mack has recruited the type of student athletes like travis decuire has recruited that can compete both in the pac 12 & the classrooms of cal, his candidacy should be seriously further evaluated

if mack has recruited a bunch of athletic 2.5 hs gpa stoopid dumb azzs to an academically mediocre school like xavier that have won a ton of basketball games, then his name can be crossed of the list

cal basketball has a 50 yr track record of unsuccessfully (other than mike montgomery's 6 yr run) trying to build winning programs with borderline student athletes, it won't work in Berkeley

where's chris mack's players hs gpa list?

**************************************************************

chris mack signed a highly regarded 2012 class of 4 players:

*****samaj christen (led the team with 17 ppg & recently declared for the nba draft)
*****myles davis
*****jalen reynolds
*****james farr

all 4 players attended prep schools for a yr before enrolling at xavier because they were borderline ncaa academically eligible

cal is different than Xavier...recruiting 2.5 hs gpa stoopid dumb azzs won't
work in Berkeley

do your ******* homework#

*****************************************************

chris, i've done my homework

your players gpas have been checked & there are xavier alumni & faculty that have noted that you have recruited non student athletes with low hs gpas, funneled them thru non academic prep schools for a yr where they have received the necessary artificial high grades in order to meet ncaa eligibility guidelines & then won a ton of games with these guys

that **** won't work in berkeley

i would suggest you use cal's interest to negotiate more $ from xavier & finish up building your dream home in your (and your wife lori's) hometown dayton while hopefully leading xavier to more sweet sixteens & better

your highly successful scheme won't work in california

Shocky's on the case.
Dream home in Dayton?

Dayton doesn't play too well in The People's Republic of Berkeley.

theo robertson is the greatest 3 pt shooter in cal history...robertson shot a cal best 44% during his career including an amazing 48.7% his jr yr...this past season robertson not worked as the director of bb operations but also served as the shooting guru particularly to jordan "man on fire" mathews

theo robertson was not only a lights out long range shooter for the bears but also a highly respected teammate who often unselfishly played out of position because of cal's lack of depth at the time...he also was a lock down defender with a steely demeanor & a tireless work ethic

monty made a tactically wise decision in hiring robertson as the director of basketball operations as theo was not paid in his prior role with the program...theo is hopefully being groomed to eventually be on the bench as an asst coach...robertson could be a an older brother figure to bears recruiting targets in relentlessly watching them play in 100+ hs/aau games all the while explaining to players & their families from 1st hand experience the keys to balancing big time basketball with world class educational opportunities

if cal intends to surpass arizona in bb recruiting, then the 1st action by the next men's bb hc at the university of california, berkeley should be to elevate theo robertson to an assistant bb coach...mitch elkins would then be promoted to director of bb operations

the bears bb program need an energized & tireless young guy who will relentlessly build strong relationships with aau & hs coaches while attending 100+ games a yr...why was td the only bears coach at the state championship games in sacramento this weekend?...that is embarazzing & unacceptable

perhaps the biggest issue (and it is often unsaid) for many elite recruits & their families is if they can academically compete in the classrooms of berkeley?...douche bags like dana altman have told them they are too stoopid to go to cal

robertson is qualified to address these academic issues with cal's targeted recruits & their families and candidly answer those questions re: cal's outstanding academic support program from a personal perspective story of achievement

it should take about 5 minutes for the next cal bb hc to elevate theo robertson to an assistant coach...maybe 8 minutes if they are a dumb azz

give theo the ball & watch what happens

theo robertson has confirmed to me that he's now an interim assistant coach with mike's retirement

in this role he can scout & meet with cal's targeted prospects off campus (that's not possible as the director of bb operations per ncca regulations)

theo traveled today to both sacramento & los angeles

mike montgomery has been the most successful head basketball coach at the university of california, berkeley during the last half century

2008-09 22-11
2009-10 24-11
2010-11 18-15
2011-12 24-10
2012-13 21-12
2013-14 21-14

mike's legacy will also include cleaning up the ben braun academic cesspool, the creation of the meb fund, and a team of talented high character coaches & student athletes

and he did it all with a sly grin on his face & the full support of his family

cal family#

kinda lost in the national search process is a celebration of mike montgomery's success at cal & just as importantly, positioning it for an even higher trajectory with the right next hc

uniformed dumb azzs who do not understand the implications of cal's challenging academics & the payoffs that schools like arizona engage in will whine & pontificate that the bears should have won more games, etc. but the fact is that mike was cal's most successful bb hc during the last half a century

if alan crabbe has stayed for his sr season, this could have been a dream season but you can't blame alan for takng the $, that's life in the big city

to be honest with you, mike kinda looks like sinatra these days...too bad montgomery can't sing or play golf (according to coach des)

colin slater is a lightning quick 5'10" 150 lbs from clovis that is ranked in the top 50 for the 2016 class...he is considered the top on ball defender on the west coast with his jorge like non stop motor

slater is a strong student with a 3.3 gpa & his strong religious beliefs resulted in him transferring from the much larger clovis north hs (where as a freshman he avg 17 ppg w/46% on 3 pters & 7 apg) to the d5 immanuel hs for his soph yr

td identified colin early & slater made his 1st unofficial college visit to cal for the northwestern fb game last fall along with chimezie metu...they toured the campus, scrimmaged with the bears (staff was buzzing about slater's work on jerome "around the world" randle) & i saw them sit down in the esp section during the game & then leave with decuire & gottlieb after the 1st quarter

colin later said "it was a lot of fun...i enjoyed the coaching staff...they showed me the whole campus...it was pretty impressive...there's nothing like cal, i'll tell you that much"

chris mack has wisely turned down the cal offer which would require him to stop recruiting 2.5 hs gpa dumb azzs & instead renegotiated a much more financially lucrative compensation contract with xavier

this is a win/win for everybody including mack's family...mack's wife christy & their 2 daughters don't want to hear daddy come home every night in a bad mood and say "where the hell am i supposed to find 3.5 hs gpa guys to play for me?...why didn't i listen to shocky and stay in ohio?...man, those hippies sure smell bad too"

now the blue ribbon selection committee can focus on everybody's favorite drinking buddy, eric musselman

So Mack was offered the job?

...not formally. The only guy who is ever formally offered the job is the guy who takes it.
