played the valley club of montecito this morning as a first out walking twosome...the valley club is a fabulously fun alister mackenzie design with wildly undulating greens that has been restored by tom doak

shay & taylor are on a campus tour of uc santa barbara & we're gonna go to brophy's for lunch on the water

taylor just texted me, "dad why would anybody who had a choice not go to college in california?'

i dunno, sweetie

i'm contemplating joining seasoned broadcasters todd mckim & jay john on cal radio broadcasts next season since i go to all the games anyways

todd: tyler dorsey misses his 8th 3 pointer of the night off the front rim, rabb clears the boards to t-wall with a quick pass down the sideline to bird...jabari dribbles to the top of the key, bounce pass to jordan on the wing...he's got a back door pass to a cutting jaylen, slam dunk bears!

jay: that 6 assists for mathews and 23 points for brown as the undefeated bears go up on the ducks by 29 points

todd: time out for oregon, altman is using his final time out and he's clearly not happy screaming at his players, the haas pavilion crowd is on their feet again yelling for the walk ons with 5 minutes and 38 seconds left in the game, the energy tonight is electric!

jay: cal is clearly outplaying oregon but the 3 arrests earlier this week of ducks players isn't helping them at all, this will likely be oregon's 5th straight conference loss

shocky: dana altman is a criminal

todd: ok, we'll take a commercial break during the time out

it could happen#

lol. The techs would need to install a breakaway wire for the headphones with as much as you like to jump out of your chair. That and a 5 second delay...

the cal staff is actively targeting with an actionable offer ira lee a 6'8"+ 205 lbs power forward from sierra canyon (chatsworth), a top 20 player in the 2017 class

lee missed his sophomore season after undergoing shoulder surgery but is "95%" of the way back now...dude is very physical down low & is currently playing for the oakland soldiers

this is likely gonna be yet another cal, arizona & ucla recruiting battle with ira planning to unofficially visit with his family both berkeley (65% today) & tucson (109% today) this july

ira is a strong student (duke & stanford have also show interest) which is gonna hurt an academically mediocre school like arizona...his decision will focus upon "coaching style, atmosphere and education"

"i like the way they play...coach martin said he'll get me to the next level...i like the way they do things up there...they are trying to build up and win a championship"
-ira lee

lee has already accompanied his sierra canyon teammates to berkeley for one state championship

yeah, ira would an ideal cal fit to replace ivan rabb in 2017 & help them bears touch the sky

the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public (#3 overall) university in the world (including southern california)

ira lee scored 12 points on 6-11 fgs along with 12 boards & 5 blocks as the oakland soldiers militarily outmaneuvered the athletes first (oklahoma) 93-76 at the nike eybl peach jam in atlanta

jaylen hands, a dynamic 6'2" 155 lbs point guard from chula vista & a top 20 player in the 2017 class, has been offered by the bears staff

"cal has done a great job of recruiting this year and that's something i'm looking at"
-jaylen hands

jaylen had been considered a ucla lean with arizona running a tight 2nd position but let's be real here, there's a new national powerhouse program in the united states with much stronger academics than both ucla & arizona that's located in the cosmopolitan and diverse san francisco/oakland bay area

jaylen hands would be a potential dynamic impact leader for cal's touch the sky class (2017) to assure the current upward recruiting trajectory of the california golden bears basketball program:

cal's monster class (2013)
cal's doses & mimosas class (2014)
cal's diamonds are forever class (2015)
cal's howlin' at the moon class (2016)
cal's touch the sky class (2017)
cal's unnamed class (2018)*

*the vision is jordan brown, elijah hardy, miles norris & ideally marvin bagley

jaylen has got a busy summer schedule trying out for the team usa squad starting on may 28th & also playing for the compton magic aau team but still intends to unofficially visit berkeley with his dad ronnie who knows coach wyking jones from playground games growing up in inglewood back in the day

the bears staff will be most successful when all 5 coaches (coach martin, huf, tracy, wyking & nicodemus) build relationships with prospective recruits & their families...these 5 guys comprise arguably the most likable & hardest working collegiate basketball staff in the nation, a staff that will compete with anybody including coach cal for any recruit with academic ambition in the united states

some valuable recruiting lessons were learned (from my perspective) this year in chasing guys with overly involved dads/selfish position demands like tyler dorsey & bennie boatwright and guys who lack the necessary academic ambition to flourish at cal like brandon sampson (no ncca qualifying score) but obviously the diamonds are forever class (2015) has transformed the #1 public university in the world to an epic turning point on the basketball court that even pudgy noted donuts expert sean miller has conceded that cal could win the national championship this upcoming season

this **** is getting live

the bears staff has offered & is actively recruiting greg floyd jr, a lanky smooth 6'8" 170 lbs wing from desert pines hs that is playing aau ball this summer with the las vegas knicks (coached by lamar bigby)

floyd is blowing up this summer with 20+ offers from major programs with recent offers from cal, arizona & michigan (unofficial visit this month)...he is currently rated as a 3 star prospect but is expected to be a top 50 player when the 2017 rankings are updated in the future...the floyd family & coach bigby intend to narrow his collegiate list to a dozen schools this summer heading into his junior year

his style is similar to kevin durrant as his 6'11" wingspan, strong ball skills/ability to create his own shot & ability to be multiple make him a tough matchup both offensively & defensively

coach martin has made a commitment to watching greg's aau games this july...yeah, cal's touch the sky class (2017) definitely needs a dude that can fly near the roof of haas pavilion & let's be real here, kayne got no vertical lift these days (that's why kim k is gonna dump his sorry broken down azz for me)

the bears staff has offered troy brown jr, a 6'4" 175 lbs point guard from las vegas centennial & the #2 ranked player in the 2017 class

brown is playing aau ball this summer for the las vegas prospects under the watchful eyes of cal coaches...troy is a combo guard (coach martin loves guys who are multiple) with extraordinary length with lethal passing skills & a deadly shooting touch

what's the best thing about troy?...he's got a 3.7 gpa, basketball is not gonna define troy brown jr & that's really bad news for academically mediocre schools that are recruiting this true student athlete

marvin bagley iii, a 6'10" phenom from corona del sol high school (tempe) is from gilbert (an upper middle class suburb of phx) is ranked as the #1 player in the 2018 class

my yoga classmate buddy padraig o'brien (a highly respected basketball trainer that has worked with 5 lottery picks & kingsley okoroh) told me that marvin is an excellent student in the classroom with a strong academic focus & that his parents (dad is the head coach of the phoenix phamily 2018 youth basketball team) are very strict (and highly religious) & won't let their son's recruitment turn into a circus...a major factor that will damage the recruiting efforts of arizona & arizona state is the family's concerns re: the lack of diversity in arizona (greater detail can only be shared directly with the staff)

so i asked padraig this week how good is marvin, a freshman this year in high school, compared to the pac 12's best players

padraig smiled & told me that bagley would've won the pac 12 mvp award this year...by a large margin

this afternoon marvin bagley scored a dominating 28 points on 9-12 field goals along with 13 rebounds...and yeah, he's 4-9 on 3 pointers this weekend at the peach jam

charles is a highly coveted national recruit with ucla (dad & uncle played there), arizona, kansas, uconn, unlv & louisville (wyking) all targeting the articulate student athlete...but only the #1 ranked public (#3 overall) university in the world offers an elite combination of academics & basketball in a family environment along with ideal weather in the diverse & cosmopolitan bay area

team: california golden bears

shockster 2015/2016 pac 12 prediction: 2nd place (but also the unrealized potential to win a national championship)

coach: cuonzo "love train" martin

what you need to know about martin:

what up in berkeley?: the bears starting 5 will be able to potentially successfully compete with any starting line up in the nation with future nba lottery picks in diamonds jaylen brown & ivan rabb along with early pac 12 mvp candidate tyrone wallace (17.1 ppg despite an abysmal .318 3 point & .606 free throw shooting along with a team high 7.1 rpg & 4 apg), jordan "chunk" mathews (13.6 ppg with an fuego .443 3 point shooting) & jabari "let if fly" bird (10.5 ppg & a physically/mentally soft 3.3 rpg)

stephen domingo, noted by coach martin as often the best defender in practices with a relentless work ethic and an alan crabbe style perimeter shooting stroke & sammy "the gym rat" singer building off late last season's shooting confidence are projected to be the 1st guys off the bench along with the winner of the kameron rooks/kingsley okoroh battle of the 7'1" titans

roger moute a bidias & roman davis will serve as defensive specialists & it's expected brandon "downtown" chauca is gonna provide long range sniping with the bears much improved offensive spacing this season

and yeah, gotta love all of them walk ons: taylor's favorite brenden "in san francisco" glapion, hard working nick "at nite" hamilton & cole "surfer dude" welle, sharpshooter nick kerr & the enigmatic xavier valdes...it's a shame coach martin only thinks of them as the saddest show on earth

what this means for the bears: the question of the century with respects to the cal basketball program on the eve of potentially the most epic season of our lifetimes is whether or not these clowns have got the hearts to consistently play tough defense, aggressively fight for rebounds & compete for loose balls...i watched virtually ever second of cal basketball in person last season (which is different than being a passive bears tv fan only watching the action as dictated to you by the tv cameras) & trust me, these question marks are both deeply profound & seriously troubling with regards to whether or not this team will ever achieve their true potential for greatness

t-wall was outplayed by the nba undrafted point guards at both arizona & stanford which contributed to the bears 5 losses vs the wildcats & cardinals...his sorry azz shooting was embarzzing, i would bet on both coach webster & jay john in a shooting competition with t-wall, a guy with nba 1st round aspirations

jabari bird did not dive for loose balls often pulling up short & was physically outmuscled by arizona's elite wings in the bears 3 losses...he did not battle for rebounds, letting down his teammates as kravish & wallace did all the dirty work on the boards in jb's absence

jordan mathews often lost track of his guy in defensive assignments & did not bring a positive mental focus to each game...dude has got a reggie miller shooting stroke with a candy azz soft kayne consistency with respects to the rest of his game

the staff wanted to bring in tyson jolly & davon dillard this season to relentlessly push bird & mathews, that's not gonna happen now...are birds & mathews gonna push themselves?

jaylen brown & ivan rabb haven't done **** in college, are they a bunch of overrated & worthless fake diamonds that you can buy at the rockridge swap market on sunday mornings for 50 cent?

what about them coaches, is coach martin ever gonna design/scheme masterful in bound plays like coach montgomery that result in easy buckets?...is coach webster gonna get those soft guards/wings to play with greater intensity like they grew up on food stamps in the projects & had to fight for everything?...is wyking gonna get the bigs right?...is huf gonna build his reputation beyond that of a charismatic recruiter with actual basketball skills development of his guys?...is nicodemus gonna continue to let guys at the basketball house eat popcorn & **** like that?

these california golden bears got the potential to win a ******* national championship but they also got a ton of potential roadblocks, are they guys gonna be like lupe fiasco or not?

so many question marks surrounding cal basketball

are the cal dance & cheerleading teams gonna show up 100% toned or what?

is oski gonna get out of rehab and/or ever graduate from cal, does that dumb azz got any academic ambition at all?

are cal fans gonna show up in person to create a deafeningly loud hostile home court advantage with insane energy at haas pavilion?...what is your personal commitment to cal basketball?

together we attack

Jabari had his choice of going anywhere in the Nation, but he stayed at home
Signing Jabari was huge for the program and he stuffed the box score with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks

He stayed on the court afterwards for a TV interview, so was the last Bear to leave the arena with most of the fans also gone. I waited behind on the bleacher right above the doors to the lockers
As he ran by, I yelled his name. He turned around with a huge smile, and jumped 9 feet up to give me a slap on the hand, and ran out to join his team

team: arizona wildcats

shockster 2015/2016 pac 12 prediction: 1st place

coach: sean "dunkin' donuts" miller

what you need to know about miller: his guys play tenacious defense, not a great gameday coach...and yeah he likes them dunkin' donuts variety boxes, he's multiple that way

what up in tucson?: arizona loses a lot in stanley "bumper car" johnson (13.8 ppg & 6.5 rpg), undrafted college drop out brandon ashley (12.2 ppg & 5.2 rpg), rondae hollis-jefferson (11.2 ppg & 6.8 rpg) & fearless leader tj mcconnell (10.4 & 6.3 apg)

the wildcats will return kaleb "zeus" tarczewksi (9.3 ppg & 6.2 rpg) who along with utah's jakob poeltl are the best true 5s in the pac 12...boston college transfer ryan anderson will be an impact player at the 4 after redshirting last season & gabe york (9.2 ppg) along with former bears recruit (moms didn't like berkeley) elliott pitts & parker jackson-cartwright (suspended at loyola high school for cheating on classwork) will play bigger roles along with incoming freshman allonzo "the gunner" trier, ray smith, justin simon & chase comanche (moms is a protypical little league dad)

what this means for the bears: the pac 12 title & west coast dominance runs thru tucson until cal knocks them on their azz...tuscon is a dump but them senior citizens from the surrounding retirement communities along with the low gpa students show up at mckale in numbers...this program was built by the legendary lute olson along with his braintrust jay john...it's currently being slowly run into the ground by donut boy, he's shown no indication that he's capable of winning the big games

Yes, it is really being run into the ground. Last year, AZ only made it to the Elite Eight. As it did two other times in the 6 years Miller has been there. Lute was there 24 years, won it all one year, his 14th year at AZ, made it to the Final Four 2 other times, and the Elite Eight 3 times. In Lute's first 6 years, there was one Final Four and no Elite Eights.

What a horrible showing by Miller!

old timers will tell you that when the california golden bears last won a ncca national championship in men's basketball that legendary coach pete newell often has a towel locked down in his jaws

unlv's one of a kind head coach jerry tarkanian once said the key to winning a national championship is having 3 nba 1st rounders...tark the shark also said "the secret is to have eight great players and four others who will cheer like crazy"

guess what?

sluggo, my source for the bears potentially having 3 future lottery picks is a nba front office executive/golf buddy of mine...t-wall is on that team's lottery evaluation/scouting radar, 6'5"+ unselfish point guards with good vision that can shoot with both hands & rebound are a prized commodity these days in the league

agreed that right now bird projects no better than an unlikely 2nd round draft choice but by the time jabari graduates in 2 seasons from now he has the physical tools to play himself into the nba 1st round if he continues to mature with much greater intensity & toughness particularly on d, his motor is a real question mark

the most important numbers with respects to the success of the upcoming potentially epic season & the future of cal basketball are gonna be this season's attendance figures at haas pavilion

cal averaged 8,099 fans per game last season at home last season, that needs to organically grow over 10,000+ this season

this is important as our student athletes thrive when there are deafeningly loud crowds roaring to create insane energy for a hostile homecourt advantage

furthermore future 5 star targeted prospective recruits wanna play on large stages in front of sold out crowds, 10,000+ fans per game will allow coach martin & his relentless recruiting staff to continue the current upward trajectory ascent of the cal basketball program

so what is your personal commitment to cal basketball?...is now the time to turn off the tv & celebrate potentially the greatest bears basketball/football team of our lifetimes in person like a happy idiot whose returning to the races?

Shocky, my source is myself. I believe Wallace is on some lists, and there is an outside chance that he sneaks into the first round, but the lottery is very, very unlikely. Do you know how many senior guards from power conferences have been lottery picks in the last five years? Zero. There have been only three from non-power conferences (Jimmer, Damien Lillard, and CJ McCollum). I think highly of his pro potential. His left-handed face up game is similar in style to Manu Ginobili and James Harden. But it won't work at that level when you can't hit the three or free throws. His shot needs to be rebuilt, and given that it has not happened so far, I doubt that will happen until he is in the pros. To his advantage, he is the proper age for his year, unlike most players who are held back or start late.

Bird had the physical tools to dominate in high school. But not in college, much less the pros. He peaked at 17. It happens, it is no one's fault. Mathews may end up being a great college player, he is already very good, but he is 4 inches too short given his game. Domingo has good pro wing size and looked great in high school. And the pros love shooters. I have high hopes for him.

Agreed with everything, BUT, none of this will matter if the concessions don't improve.

What's the word on Mitch Lightfoot? Cal just offered but is he already a Stanford lean?

Shocky or any connected person,
Any chance they will bring back the 1 hr call in radio program after Cal games? They killed it a couple of years ago, but with the renaissance of the team I wonder whether they can reinstate it. I often enjoyed it, especially after a good win.

bearprof, jay john told me "the show was stopped 4 years ago or so...that was sponsored by img and cancelled by img...i don't think img has any interest in starting it up again"

sfbearz, you're on point with the call, stanford leans from conservative sheltered suburban backgrounds (think cameron walker) tend to almost always pick stanford over cal

but if mitch lightfoot can be persuaded by coach martin (who is running lead on the recruitment of the off the charts motor gilbert christian high school star) to make an unofficial visit to berkeley this summer with his family, then game on for the more advanced basketball skills david kravish student athlete (3.7 gpa)

i'll have more to say about lightfoot soon
