I think that is right - especially with their records pretty similar. Sadly I think that Richmond loss is not going to look at that good come March. Sucks because it was ages ago (it seems) and second day of Tournament but it is what it is.

In other news SDSU is starting to play well so that loss won't be so bad. St. Mary's is turning into a good W. Obviously did an important task by getting Zona. Would be great to Get Oregon when they travel to Haas.

one of the key criteria of the ncca selection & seeding committee is the # of quality wins, if davidson finishes strong & makes march madness then the december 28th win at haas will support cal's resume just like the bears preseason victory over the st mary gaels

losing to richmond on a neutral floor is gonna be a negative no matter what

What up Jaylen?

How are you?

I am fine.

There's something my yoga instructor said tonite at yoga class that resonated with me that I want to share with you.

She told us that we should meditate an hour a day. And that if we don't got time for an hour a day then we should meditate for two hours a day.

Namastae, my spiritual friend. But just to make sure we're on the same page, let's compete like bad azzs in Salt Lake City, ok?

the bears staff made the 1st charter flight ever for a recruiting trip to so cal to visit jemarl baker in december which resulted in his commitment shortly thereafter...coach hufnagel correctly calculated that a charter plane for the staff would be less expensive than multiple commercial airline tickets & the necessity of spending the night (hotel costs) due to the lack of late nite commercial flights back to oakland

team: utah utes

shockster 2015/2016 pac prediction: 3rd place

coach: larry "special k" krystkowiak

what you need to know about krystkowiak: when coach krystkowiak arrived in freezing azz salt lake city the utes were 6-25 in 2011...special k turned around the program by running off all the guys who didn't wanna go to class every day...the 2013/2014 utah team had 5 guys on the pac 12 all academic team, the most for any team in the pac 12

special k gets it, men take care of their business...discipline starts in the classroom and the s&c program creating a solid foundation for success on the basketball court...sure, utah isn't gonna be confused with cal, stanford or an ivy league school but it's very clear that krystkowiak expects his student athletes to work towards earning a diploma...for guys like jayce johnson who want a homogenous student population in a non diverse environment at an academically mediocre school, utah is a logical choice based upon those values

what up in salt lake city?: replacing team leader delon wright (14.5 ppg, 5.1 apg & 4.9 rpg with an insane 50.9 fg% isn't gonna happen...watching the utes from the 1st row behind the cal bench at the huntsman center it was very clear that he was the catalyst/emotional leader for his team, wright facilitated the offensive run & he set the tone for the utes suffocating d intensity

but almost everyone else returns including brandon taylor (10.6 ppg & 3.6 apg), jordan loveridge (10.0 ppg & 3.9 apg) & the best returning big in the pac 12 austrian & former cal silent commit jakob poeltl (9.1 ppg & 6.8 rpg) with a deep bench & a talented incoming freshmen class

what this means for the bears: there are 4 pac 12 teams that could be ranked in the top 20 nationally next season, the road trip to salt lake city & boulder is gonna be very challenging for the bears

utah is 15-5/4-3 with a marquee victory over #7 ranked duke in front of the cameron crazies & an impressive road sweep last week of the washington schools

the utes are led by future (will declare after this season) nba 1st rounder 7' 235 lbs jakob poeltl (16.9 pg with a lethal 63.7% fgs & 9.0 rpg), 6'6" 222 lbs jordan loveridge (11.8 ppg & 3.7 rpg), 6'9" 210 lbs kyle kuzma (11.0 ppg with 47.4% fgs & 6.0 rpg), 6'4" 215 lbs lorenzo bonam (10.4 ppg with 51.3% fgs, 3.1 rpg & 3.1 apg) & 5'10" 167 lbs brandon taylor (team high 3.4 apg & 9.0 ppg with an erratic 28.3% on 3 pointers, bears gotta not let him attack the basket & force him into perimeter shots)

this key to this game will be limiting all american hungrian jakop poeltl, like the 1st game in berkeley kam & the king gotta bring a physical presence to this battle and force/overplay poeltl to use his left hand for shooting...utah shoots the ball (48.1% on fgs) & rebounds (39 rpg) very well...the bears will have significant match up advantages with ivan & jaylen and need to push tempo, the utes would prefer a lower scoring half court offensive game...this year's cal team is at it's very best when cleanly hitting the defensive boards & fast breaking, it's brings energy to the entire team

this game really isn't about utah (which is a very good team), it's really about whether or not the cal basketball program is ready to next step forward & play with the necessary full 40 minutes of mental toughness competing on every single play without mental lapses that is required to win on the road...the huntseman center is the 2nd toughest road venue after tucson's mckale center but the bears got more talent than the utes

but do they have more heart?

let's do this#

The committee also likes stories and "how are you playing now". The fact that we have two freshmen who are lottery picks is a huge advantage. The committee will also take into consideration that Wallace was injured. We have all of those intangibles in our favor. If we do not completely collapse, we will be fine, getting the benefit of the doubt for all those reasons.

guess what, them sorry azz mute ******* bears are #341 (out of 347 teams) in forcing the least amount of turnovers (9.75 per game)...yeah, #1 west virginia forces 19.8 turnovers per game, that kinda helps win basketball games on the road

maybe if the guys would act like the dude on the other team was trying to inflict harm on their moms they would play more aggressively & just take the ball away with attitude...so whose gonna get the 50/50 loose balls & dig balls out of the paint tonite?

this team got final 4 talent but it's really not clear if they got the **** you up attitude necessary for championship basketball

winning on the road in college basketball is very challenging, tonite there were maybe a dozen cal fans (including gold medal olympian mary t meagher) among the 13,055 in attendance at the huntsman center for utah's black out game (the bears originally intended to wear blue jerseys & had to fly over the white jerseys today with a cal staffer)

you gotta play with relentless intensity for 40 minutes, tonite the bears played for maybe 30 minutes & that's not enough...you can see it in the faces of the guys, they are clearly tired of losing

but the team still needs alpha males to emerge, to demand the ball in critical junctures & make defensive plays when home teams go on runs, that didn't happen tonite

there are no game balls when you lose but stephen domingo provided a valuable spark off the bench

the good news is that t-wall is gonna get his cast off next week, the bears need his senior alpha male leadership

it's a long day for the bears, they woke up at the university marriott, practiced at the huntsman center, stopped the bus at a sandwich shop for lunch, did homework & are flying charter with an early morning arrival into the bay area so the guys can go to classes thursday

the huntsman center is the 2nd toughest road venue this season after the virigina insane energy in charlottesville...the mckale center in tucson will be the loudest road game of the year

when your back is against the wall in a hostile venue on the road, do you have the inner fortitude/unbreakable mental strength to persevere no matter what?

oskidunker, as you know coach martin is a staunch believer of building the program around a foundation of strong d played man on man...the staff is targeting future recruits that got both length & a defensive mindset

cal is leading the nation is field goal defense & we beat arizona on saturday

it's important to have an identity particularly as college basketball doesn't allow virtually unlimited practice time like the nba to implement different schemes

having said that i strongly believe that cal could've won the san diego state (an abysmal perimeter shooting team) by adapting to the game flow & switching to the zone...packing the paint with zone defenders vs the aztecs might've resulted in a different outcome

it's also possible mixing in a zone might've allowed more help in defending jakob poeltl but utah is a strong interior passing team (the bears aren't very skilled at this which is why ivan along with kam & king are often not rewarded with entry/lob passes after working hard in establishing a low presence in the block)

poeltl is a dangerous force of nature but kyle kuzma shooting 6-9 fgs for 15 points impacted the outcome last nite

coach martin has indicated a willingness to play zone when brandon chauca is in the game & the bears did so vs asu

colorado is shooting 40.9% on 3 pointers so they are probably better defended man to man but mixing it up a little in future games might get opponents out of their rhythm (particularly when they go on runs against the bears) & create less open space to operate in the paint

but bottom line it's more important regardless of the scheme for the bears to play with defensive intensity for 40 minutes, that didn't happen last nite

Very good point about the limited practice time. In college sports coaches have to choose carefully how they spend their coaching time.

At this point, when we play zone defense, we do not play it very well at all. That being said, I do agree it is something to work at and use occasionally going forward.

Yup. There were just some really bad lapses. Very frustrated that when we got up by 5 it was like they were in coast mode as opposed to turning it up to 11.

I also thought that "Brown at Point" didn't work well at all last night.....or at least wont work if guys are not relentless moving. Having Mathews get a post up LOB pass because Jaylen lost his dribble was REALLY paintful to watch. I would have hoped for some of Chauca.

coach martin has offered combo guard (can play the 1 & 2) 6'4" 188 lbs dontae coleman, a freshman at lawson state junior college (birmingham, alabama) as part of cal's howlin' at the moon class (2016) with t-man

dontae has grown several inches after not being heavily recruited at butler high school (23.3 ppg) in augusta, georgia...yeah, the shockster has played 12 rounds at that pretty good course in his hometown...coleman originally made a commitment out of high school to florida atlantic but wisely decided to see if he could emerge as a prospect on a larger stage

https://vimeo.com/144524898

coleman is currently averaging 18.3 ppg including a lethal 42.9% on 3 pointers, a dazzling 82.2% on free throws, a physical 5.2 rebounds per game & 6.52 assists per game at lawson state

dontae got a 3.1 gpa last semester & was a full qualifier out of high school, he's got 3 years of eligibility

coleman is talking a lot with his lead recruiter coach webster (they've been building a strong relationship the last several months), not sure if tracy is gonna teach him how to dance but if that happens, watch out...he hopes to visit cal on an official visit after his season ends & make a final collegiate decision in march

dontae coleman got length, an active motor along with quickness, a sweet shooting stroke, a tough defensive mindset & most importantly got academic ambition...please note that this video is 2 years old & doesn't reflect his current height

yeah, he might not be the last guy since jaylen (played with dc during a camp in high school) & shareef took a midnite train from georgia with a braves cap out to the west coast & fell in the california sun
