Green Anxious to Get Started at Cal

A month ago today, high-scoring Lakeside (Lake Elsinore, CA) High School guard Jazlen Green made the call for Cal, committing to play for the Bears in the 2019-20 season.

“It all started in my sophomore year of high school,” said Green. “Cal came down to see my first playoff game.

“I ended up hurting my knee and couldn’t play my junior season, but after that first game, they kind of lost contact. Then this last season at the Nike TOC, they were able to see me play and were able to see a few of my games once they knew I was playing again.

“That really got things going again.”

Green’s relationship with the Cal staff went a long with with being comfortable in her decision to commit to the Bears last month.

“I love my relationship with them,” said Green. “It can only get bigger and better from here on out.

“Immediately, I was comfortable with every single one of them, from Coach Lindsay (Gottlieb), to Coach Kai (Felton), to Coach Charmin (Smith) to Coach (Wendale) Farrow. Just an amazing staff. Everyone in general, I just felt at ease. It was just easy to connect with them so I’m definitely looking forward to that part.”

Green’s official visit came on January 4-6 and was her second trip to the Bay Area, though her first on Cal campus.

“I’d been up to the Bay Area earlier when I played in the San Francisco West Coast Jamboree, where Coach Lindsay got to see me play,” said Green. “I’d never been to Berkeley but I loved it there on my trip. Great atmosphere and lots of sports. Just beautiful scenery and a great vibe at Cal. I loved it.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be so beautiful at Cal but that just made things even better in my mind.”

On her visit, Green also had a chance to get comfortable with her future teammates, spending a lot of time with the players.

“I got to spend time with all of them on my visit,” said Green. “From the seniors to the freshmen, I got to meet every single one of them.

“The vibe was easy. I can honestly say it didn’t feel like an official visit. It just felt like I was going there to hang out.”

Academics also played a big role in Green’s decision to commit to Cal.

“Academics are a very big factor for me,” said Green. “What made me choose Cal over the other programs recruiting me was Cal’s academic prestige.

“This is a Cal-Berkeley degree. Not many people can say they have a degree like I can get from Cal. A degree from there holds so much power to it. When somebody sees you graduated from Cal, they automatically open those doors.

“When I got that opportunity, I couldn’t miss it. Academics are very important in my family, so to get a great education at the number one public university was something I needed to do.”

As a senior, Green estimated her stats so far are around 30 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the 24-6 Lancers, who are in the Southern Section 2A finals. They square off against 29-3 Oxford Academy on 2/23.

I think they are in the finals in Southern Cal in Division II.

30 points per game? Wow- that is extremely, extremely impressive.

Nice late grab that likely flew under the radar, due to injury.

Despite not being a top hundred player I still think jazz is a low 4 star. And the important thing is she really wants to play here.

Jazlen Green and her Lakeside High teammates are CIF 2A Champions:

From The Riverside Press-Enterprise:

Jazlen Green was in such a state of nirvana on Saturday evening that she was launching 3-pointers and trotting back before the shot even went in and she didn't even notice.
"I didn't even realize that. That's crazy," said Green, who did it on two of her first three 3-pointers. "That's amazing, though. I watch a lot of Steph Curry. Sometimes, it takes over. The game just takes over."
Or Green takes it over, which she did for 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, as Lakeside easily dispatched Oxford Academy 73-50 in the CIF-SS Division 2A girls basketball final Saturday at Colony High.

What an easy stroke

She may need to change it some for college, as it looks like she brings the ball low before going into her shot

That takes more time and space, and against better, taller defenders, she will have less of both

But from these highlights and her success this year, looks like she will be a good player for us

Wow. She looks really, really good. I know an injury kept her out of her junior year but even with that, i'm surprised only one recruiting service has her ranked.

She has some serious range. And that crossover!

Miss Green does look great in her highlite video. She is athletic and has decent size (5-10) for SG. Jazlen also possesses great range on her outside shots. Cal will really need her offensive contributions next season.

Kianna Smith's alma-mater, Troy, eliminated Lakeside last night, 52-42. It doesn't look as if JG went off in that low scoring affair. It was a first round game in Division I. (see above)

GO BEARS!

47% on 3s, with many off the dribble, step-backs, long range.
80% FTs.

Very nice moves pushing the ball up the court and driving to the basket. Perhaps she could be our next point guard.

Hey Newbear10,

Thanks for the video and welcome to the board!

Are you the videographer, or related to Jazlen?

Jazlen (great name) is #10 in most of the clips, so perhaps there is a connection.

I'm getting Jene Morris vibes. Flew a little under the radar (I think she was ranked #7th in NorCal her SR year)... but started and was effective immediately her FR year at Cal. Game translated well and the playing time was there.

She looks really good in her highlights. If she got overlooked due to her injury it kind of makes sense.

Really looking forward to seeing her play here.

I also thought a little reminiscent of Jene Morris. Very comparable in terms of physique.

I wouldn't say Jene was underrated by locals. She should have been #6 ahead of Shantrell Sneed, but above her were Alexis Gray-Lawson, Ashley Walker, Devanei Hampton, and the Paris twins. Below her, Danielle Orsillo was a big star for Arizona State when they were an Elite 8 team.

Nationally, however, indeed I don't think anyone had Jene on their top 100 list. And I think Ashley Walker was only featured on one ranking service list at #48.

Green is the CIF 2A Player of The Year.

I think we got ourselves a steal.

Accolades keep coming. First Team by the LA Times along with players such as Osborne. She averaged 29 points per game!
