Quarterback Competition Has Begun

February 25, 2019

Head coach Justin Wilcox officially declared the competition wide-open for the starting quarterback spot, and all the candidates took part in the first day of spring practice.

Last year’s primary starter Chase Garbers (No. 7), UCLA transfer Devon Modster (6), JC transfer Jack Newman (8) and walk-on Robby Rowell (13) all took snaps on Monday.

Wilcox said that competition for playing time is taking place all over the roster. “That’s what  we’re focused on right now at every position, and quarterback’s no different.,” he said. “There is going to be opportunities for all those guys to get reps. That is the beauty of spring football. We have enough reps to go around.

“I think Chase is going to get a lot better. We have Devon in here and Jack and Robby. And all those guys are going to have opportunities to get 11-on-11, 7-on-7 and 1-on-1. What’s most important is that they get better, like every other position. The depth chart is not something we are even talking about right now.”

He said he had no timetable for making a decision.

“It will resolve when it resolves, whether that’s in a week, ten days, two months or six months,” he said. “I don’t know the answer to that.

The running back position is also interesting, with Brandon McIlwain (5), the erstwhile former quarterback and current baseball outfielder working with RBs Monday.

The other candidates on the field this spring are Marcel Dancy (23), Alex Netherda (31), Chris Brown (34) and DeShawn Collins (26).

Below is video of a running backs drill and well as QB drills:

My fear is that this sounds a lot like last year. They had no timetable to determine the QB and they in fact were never able to figure it out. In the first game they played three quartbacks.

If they don't name a starter soon in fall camp, I fear that no one again is separating themselves and that's a bad sign. Much higher probability of having all subpar QBs than all good to decent ones.
Statements like these make me wonder how long you have followed college football. It is way more common than not to have a coaching staff establish a culture of competition in Spring camp only to pivot in Fall camp to name the depth chart at every position.

They have a new QB on the team in Modster, what kind of message would it send to other QBs on the team that Modster is the No. 1 when nobody has seen him throw? That would be unfair to the returning players. Likewise what message would it send to Modster to indicate that the No. 1 QB job is somebody elses, without anybody having seen what Modster can do and where he may stack up. That would be unfair to Modster. The idea here is to create a competition that raises all boats. Who ultimately starts or is No. 1 is an unnecessary decision at this point.

You are right - I'm not a football guru nor a college football historian... just a cal football fan. I'm not looking for the decision to be made at the start of spring practice. I'm just saying that the coaches could not decide who the best quartback was until several weeks into the season last year. That means either all the QBs are bad or they don't know and can't coach up talent. So here we are and they are again saying that they probably won't pick a starter until game day. I understand coach speak ... all I'm saying is that if no one breaks out of this competition, I fear last years QB play is what we will be replicated this year.

Changing QBs was the only solution the staff had when the offense wasn't working. We saw it again when they brought in Chase Forrest in the Cheezit Bowl.

Last year the coaches did name a starter early in the process. His name was Ross Bowers. Then Bowers broke the thumb on his throwing hand in the first game of the season...
True, but after that they couldn't decide who to play in a possession, rotating two QBs, then settling on Mcilwain, then after a few disasters going to Garbers and playing to our defensive strengths. The bowl game is seared in my memory-starting Garbers, then going to a guy who never played and ending on a historically inept offensive performance.

This is classic Wilcox-speak. Expect this same answer through the Fall.

Cal Strong a strong advocate for being strong in all phases of the game: strong in mind, strong in body, strong in charity, strong in slams, strong in advocating for religious and political rights of minorities in Egypt, strong in respect for women, strong in properly constructing ellipses . . . etc., etc..

But yes, our QBs also need to learn to rebound better. Throwing 1 interception bad. But throwing 7 in a single game much worse. Our QBs need to rebound. They also need to learn to put up 30 points a game.

If I remember correctly, Bowers was the starter and then they scrambled when he was injured or fell off the cliff in terms of performance. I think they were pretty set on him until the week or two before the season.

If Cal puts up just 21 points per game we will win a large number of games with the defense we will have. PROVIDED that we don't turn the ball over.

The team. I'm not about to put in the work to figure out which ones were defensive scores. More just making the point that 21 points a game isn't as good as it seems. You want to get up around 30.

Overall Cal scored 280 points last year over 13 games for an average of 21.5 points per game.

Cal scored 5 defensive touchdowns and I believe just the 1 special teams TD. If you grant 7 points for each of those then the offense scored 238 points, or 18.3 per game, so a 3 point per game difference.

FWIW our offense gave up 6 TD's on turnovers, all within the first 6 games. We went 1-3 in those games (with the win being over BYU).

Well after practice No.9 the following observation is noted by Premium Board reporter:

"As in Saturday's scrimmage, Chase Garbers and Devon
Modster did the lion's share of the quarterbacking, indicating
the competition might be down to those two."

How can this observation be made if "its way, way too early for projecting starters" as claimed by
Premium Boarder wifeisafurd? It seems the Premium Board members are sure worried about what us freeboardersare projecting.
