Talk of Baldwin Departure Heating up
Talk of Cal offensive coordinator/Quarterbacks coach Beau Baldwin’s departure are heating up, with word that the veteran coordinator and former Eastern Washington head coach will fill the vacant head coach position at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
“Barring a late-stage breakdown in talks, Beau Baldwin is expected to be the next head coach at Cal Poly, sources told FootballScoop on Monday,” the website wrote. “Sources told FootballScoop no signatures are in place at this time, but both sides anticipate a deal getting done.
So far under Baldwin this season, the Bears are last in scoring offense at 20.1 points per game as well as 8th in rushing offense at 132 ypg, last in passing offense at 190 ypg and last in total offense at 323 ypg.
The Bears have been able to move past a disastrous injury stretch on offense when starting QB Chase Garbers went down with a broken collarbone vs. ASU, missing seven weeks. He was able to breifly in the Bears’ loss to USC before departing with what is thought to be a concussion before returning for the final two games where he led the Bears to back-to-back road victories over Stanford and UCLA.
The Bears also were missing four starting offensive linemen during that stretch, further exacerbating their offensive woes.
The Mustangs struggled to a 3-8 record in 2019 after going 5-6 last season and 1-10 in 2017.
A spokeman at Cal was not able to confirm talk of an impending Baldwin departure and attempted contacts with Cal Poly Athletics have been unsuccessful.
