Local De La Salle DB Lu Hearns Commits to Cal

After receiving an offer from Cal this week, De La Salle (Concord, CA) DB Lu Hearns pulled the trigger for Cal. The Bay Area native was recruited as a defensive back, but has the ability to play both sides of the ball after starting at wide reciever last year for the Spartans.

Rated 3 stars (80) by 247 and Rivals (5.5), Hearns’ relationship with the Cal staff started earlier this year on an unofficial visit to campus.

“I’ve been talking a lot with Coach Yates since I came out for Junior Day,” said Hearns.

Hearns had the chance to see the Bears several times growing up, being just a half hour from home.

“I know last year they had a great season and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“The opportunity to play bigtime football, with great academics and close to home were too much to pass up,” noted Hearns.

The 5’11 Hearns played against incoming Pittsburg OT Ryan Lange‍ and is familiar with his talent. He was a 2-way star for the perennial NorCal Open Division champs, hauling in 29 catches for 439 yards and 2 touchdowns for De La Salle in 2019 to go along with 3 interceptions, 51 tackles and 20 passes defended.

De La Salle is one of the best high school football programs in the country, and hold the national record for most wins in a row with their 151-game win streak from 1992-2004. Hearns will be joining Spartan walk-ons Gunner Rask (DT) and incoming WR Grant Daley in 2021.

He'll probably be returning punts for us, as well.

Welcome to the Bear Family, Mr. Hearns! Anyone who's been in the recruiting thread knows I'm excited about this local commitment. This guy can play defense, offense, and special teams, congratulations to him and his parents on their big day!

You tell the whole damn world, this is Bear Territory

Earlier in the week there was a thread, since removed apparently, questioning why anyone would be excited by a 3-star recruit, in that case Patrick Hisatake. My opinion, as I stated, was that stars were perhaps less important than the schools Cal is beating, with increasing regularity, in recruiting match ups. In Hisatake's case, one of those schools was Michigan, among others including ASU. In Hearns' case, while he only had 1 other D-1 offer, from FAU, he was also offered by Georgetown and Columbia. I love that, even though they aren't considered football powers. It indicates that he'll be academically prepared from the get-go, and able to quickly adjust to that aspect of student life. While he may not have had numerous "big time" offers, it's obvious he can play, and will be as likely to contribute as any other player in this class. And coming from a school like De La Salle means he has a winning mindset, something that should never be underestimated. All other things being equal, players from schools like De La Salle, where the players are coached to play all out on every down, instilled with discipline, and who expect to win every time they take the field, regardless of the opponent, are essential to building a winning tradition in college. Very happy to see Wilcox continuing to recruit smart, athletic players with diverse attributes, which leads to strong teams with the necessary chemistry to persevere and prevail under the inevitable challenging moments they'll face over the course of a season. And revitalizing the local recruiting pipeline that Sonny abandoned is icing on the cake. Go Bears!

I find it hard for someone to use this logic in favor of both players.

^^^This^^^

The CalGang2021 class has a preponderance of players from winning programs. Terrific cultural foundation to continue the rebuild.

Welcome to the family, Lu! Go Bears!

Same thing Bruce Snyder did... recruit talent from winning programs. It worked for us then...

Whoa! I know nothing about this young man. If what you're saying is accurate, the sky's the limit for him. I hope that's the case, not just because of what it means for Cal, but also because of what it will mean for young Mr. Hearns.
