Dave Durden is an exceptional coach and mentor of young athletes. Thanks for the article spotlighting one of the most successful programs on campus. Attending a Cal swim meet almost feels like you are at an Olympics trial.
I know that Coach Durden was disappointed in the cancellation of the 2020 NCAAs as the team was poised for a terrific meet with a large number of his elite swimmers appeared to be peaking at the right time. That squad graduated eight senior swimmers including such stalwarts as Singapore Olympian Zheng Quah, and NCAA relay champion sprinters Michael Jensen and Pawel Sendyk, Coach Durden mentioned the incoming freshmen class that includes:

1) An elite sprinter in 6' 8" Swedish national Bjorn Seeliger. Most international recruits do not have experience in swimming in 25 yard pools, but Bjorn's 25 meter pool times convert to the best freestyle times in the 2020 recruiting class.

2) A top tier backstroke recruit in New Jersey native Destin Lasco who sports some of the 2020 recruiting class's fastest times in the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard individual medley.

3) Breaststroke ace Forrest Frazier from Iowa who also has commendable times in the 200 yard IM.

4) Sprint fly and free stud Matthew Jensen (brother of departing senior Michael) who travels west from Upper Dublin, Pennsylvania.

5) 11th hour addition via the transfer portal of senior Zach Yeadon from Notre Dame (mentioned by David in the article) who joins a very strong Cal distance freestyle group that includes Sean Grieshop, Trenton Julian, Chris Jhong and Calvin David. Yeadon, who is from Texas, which makes the transfer especially sweet and surprising given the intense rivalry with the squad from Austin, was projected to be the second seed in the 1650 yard free, and 3rd seed in the 500 yard free at the 2020 NCAAs.

The article highlighted a number of the challenges presented by the current situation as it impacts the preparation for 2021 NCAAs scheduled to be held in Iowa in March, and the Tokyo Olympics in the autumn. With several key international swimmers still at home, fall and early winter meet cancellations, and the squad adjusting to on-line classes and Covid related training protocols, the next twelve months will be extremely challenging but my money (literally and figuratively) on Coach Durden.

BTW Dave Durden can hit a golf ball a verrry long way.
