Football Schedule Released: Cal faces ASU in Crossover Game

October 3, 2020

The Pac-12 announced the abbreviated 2020 football schedule Saturday morning and in a mild surprise, Cal will play at Arizona State in their lone matchup with the South Division.  It was expected in many quarters that Cal’s scheduled game against the South would be either USC or UCLA.

The Big Game will be the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 in Berkeley.

The Cal season opens at home against Washington on Nov. 7, followed by the trip to ASU on Nov. 14, at Oregon State Nov. 21, the Big Game on the 27th, Oregon at home Dec. 5, and at Washington State Dec. 12. Starting times and the television schedule will be announced later. Not playing one or both of the LA schools interrupts at least one of Cal’s longest rivalries. The matchups against USC began in 1912 and UCLA games date back to 1934.

The seventh game, a crossover matchup against a South the team the weekend of Dec. 18-19, will be announced that week.

In a news release, Cal said: “Under current guidelines from both the state of California and the conference, no fans will be permitted to events on Pac-12 campuses out of health and safety concerns, although the policy will be revisited by the Pac-12 in January for future events should conditions allow.”

The conference schedule includes eight Friday games along with the Championship Game set to take place on a Friday evening.  The road team for the regular season Friday games is assured of a home game the preceding week.  Updated tie-breaking procedures for determining division champions and Football Championship Game participants for the 2020 season will be finalized in the near future.

Every game through the first six weeks of the season will be televised nationally by a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox and FS1. Fox will televise the Football Championship game on Friday, Dec. 18.

So, with no fans allowed in the stadium, how crowded will Tightwad Hill get?
I was just thinking the same thing.
Or can The University, keep fans out of there?
Will there still be a canon?
They will try to prevent it. But they only get there so early and they probably won't go up on the hill to chase anyone off.

I can't think of any reason why the cannon wouldn't be fired.

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet - Dec. 12 at WSU will be very cold, good chance of snow. Remember some of those Apple Cup games in November in snow storms? Bring the longjohns.

Even in the snow, Washington would power-run all over the Cougs, we will do the same.

One question I have is does this whole thing change Cal's schedule for the better or not.
Cal might benefit from playing less games and playing later in the quarter because it creates less academic pressure on the student part of student-athlete. But they lose the advantage of having 5 home games to 4 road games. Yet they miss USC, TCU and Utah-3 potential losses. So it's a hodge-podge of pluses and minuses.
Overall I feel pretty good about it. Now Oregon is really the only probable loss on the schedule and Cal has an extra day to prepare for that one.

what's the scouting report on ASU?
Besides Cal's kick-off game against the Huskies, we will also get some idea of how well Bears will stack up in the conference because ASU, Cal's second-game opponent, will play u$C.

I know most Cal fans currently think Cal should brush aside the Sun Devils, but I have my doubts. This game will be just as tough as the UDub game.

Luckily for the Bears, ASU's home field advantage with respect to the crowd disappeared due to COVID-19 preventing any crowd for this game.

During the 2019 season, ASU played 32 freshmen, of those, 21 were true freshmen. Thus, Coach Edwards' has a lot of coaching to do, especially given his biggest player loss was his All-American RB Eno Benjamin, but he still has sophomore dual-threat QB Jayden Daniels.

In 2019, Jayden proved that he is no slouch as a running QB - 113 rushing att. for 319 yds. This is in comparison to Cal's Garbers' running stats of 90 rushing att. for 223 yds. Against Cal, this QB ran for 93 yards on 12 carries in leading his team over the Bears in Berkeley last season.

You can bet that ASU's new OC, Zac Hill, will again exploit Daniels' running skills.

It looks like under Hill one of the notable offensive changes appears to be the multi-faceted rushing attack. Hill has stated that the Sun Devils are looking to use multiple backs this year on the same plays, especially now that they have a set fullback in their offense, i.e., converted LB sophomore 6-1, 226 Case Hatch (voted a team co-captain).

Note that ASU is not just making this offensive change to accommodate Daniels but more so because of two highly touted incoming running backs, **** Ngata (nation's #2 rated all-purpose back) and ****Trayanum.

Not only will the Sun Devils have a proven competent running QB and have two **** freshman RBs (who have already particpated in spring practice with the team), but they also recently got a commitment from RB Rachaad White, a highly rated 6-1, 205 JUCO transfer from Mt. San Antonio (he had 6.4 yards-per-carry average, a per-game rushing average of 114.9 yards, and 10 TDs, which gave him the second-best 2019 RB stats in the state according to the California Community College Athletic Association).

On the defensive side, head coach Herm Edwards wants immediate DL improvement, so he hired a new defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez, who is presently transitioning the DL from a three-man to a four-man front (sound familiar Bear fans?).

The only other interesting observation so far is that spring practice has been a nightmare for the PK'ers. In their last practice before Spring Break, the Sun Devils' three kickers missed six straight field goal attempts from just 38 yards out.

These three kickers, Josh Plaster, Jack Luckhurst (Cal's Luckhurst's kid) and presumed starter Cristian Zendejas, each missed two. Point of note, ASU's 24 to 17 win over Cal looks close, and it was; but, in the what-if category, remember Zendejas missed two FGs (one was only a 37 yarder), otherwise the score could've of been 30 to 17.

So, Cal's first two games will be doozies!

Speaking of kickers, do we know who our starting kicker/punter will be?

Cal coaches are throwing the dice now to pick a kicker!??

As to Cal's first game, the big departure hit to UDub was Head Coach Petersen leaving.

Washington quickly and smartly hired a new head coach Jimmy Lake. Note, although being a head coach will be new to him, the team will not. He has been the Huskies defensive assistant coach for almost six years, so he knows the team.

The next big departure was QB Jacob Eason moving on to the NFL.

As I pointed out previously, Lake attempted to be Johnny-on-the-spot with a quick QB replacement. He thought he could immediately bring in flashy Wake Forest grad-transfer Jamie Newman, but alas, Jamie chose Georgia instead.

The above oh-darn outcome look to leave UDub with a very young and inexperienced QB situation.

When spring practice started, the Huskies tried out three inexperienced scholarship signal callers: redshirt ****sophomore Jacob Sirmon (6-5, 234), redshirt ****freshman Dylan Morris (6-0, 196) and early enrollee ****freshman Ethan Garbers (6-3, 190) [you know who his brother is]. Of this group, only Sirmon has thrown a pass in mop-up duty last season...poor UDub, right?

Hold it! Bear sunshine pumpers don't bring out your forks and knives just yet. Word on Seattle streets was Coach Lake still might have a Plan B up his sleeve. Well, it turns out he did.

Coach Lake went to his Plan B and pulled in an experienced 6-2, 200 grad-transfer QB named Kevin Thomson from Sac State. I know most of you are saying "Sac State?"

You may think that he may not be good enough for the Huskies, but his performance stats indicate otherwise. Thomson was voted 2019 Big Sky's Conference offensive POY while taking Sac St. to an overall 9-4 record.

Last year, Thomson completed 265 of 450 passes (59%) for 3,216 yards and 27 touchdowns; granted, these stats may not completely impress in and of themselves, but more importantly, he showed that he's a running QB to be reckoned with in that he also rushed for 619 yards and a team-best 12 rushing TDs! He has close to 4.5 speed!

If some of you are still smirking thinking Thomson's commit is nothing for the Bears to worry about, think again.

Note, last season against common opponent UC Davis, Cal barely beat the Aggies 27 to 13 with Garbers at the helm, but note, Sac St. too similarly beat UC Davis 27 to 17 with Thomson. Garbers threw for a very commendable 238 yards and rushed for 18 more yards, but Thomson in the Hornets' game threw for 300 yards and rushed for 116 yards!

Whomever is QB, he should have plenty of Dawg targets to throw to, but for some reason, such hasn't been the case over the last two seasons. I mean, UDub has recruited well in that the Huskies' roster is dripping wet with **** WRs, but they tend to drop the ball a lot?

For example, their stellar receivers group dropped a nation-leading 52 passes in 2018.

Lake isn't putting up with this habit anymore; case in point, he's hired a new WR coach who has coached WRs at pass-crazy Boise State and Eastern Washington.

Needless to say, this has been good news for what many are calling the west's premier wide receiver class in 2020, that is, ****Jalen McMillan (6-2, 182), ****Rome Odunze (6-3, 205) and ** Sawyer Racanelli (6-2, 208).

(Sawyer is listed as ** because he missed his senior hs season due to injury, but it must be noted that as a sophomore and junior he led his HS to back-to-back Washington 2A State Championships in 2017 and 2018, eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons, was named to the all-state team as a junior in 2018 and was just the fifth player in state history with 100 or more receptions in a season.)

Sorry for dwelling on the above QB and WR intrigues, but everything else for the Huskies seems to be in a wait-and-see mode for the time being.

I mean, UDub should again have a fair to middling defense.

Washington returns nine defensive starters from the unit that defeated Boise State 38-7 in the 2019 Las Vegas Bowl and that finished 15th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 19.4 points per game. This unit will NOT be anchored by (6-3, 293) senior DL Onwuzurike, who was named to the All-Pac-12 first team in 2019 because about a month ago he opted to turn pro..

As for offense, quien sabe? The Huskies have a rookie head coach and a rookie offensive coordinator, so no one can say anything for sure about what to expect from UDub but passing looks to be their game. Cal's DBs will definitely be tested early.

Thank you, but please be aware that I didn't pick UDub to win outright; it's a 50/50 toss up game. I do note
that the Pac-12 media rates Cal over Washington in the North division.
