After four days of practice at fall camp, the Cal football team took Tuesday off. Head coach Justin Wilcox said in a Zoom call with the local media that the Bears would don full pads for the first time this week,

“This week we will start with full padded practices,” he said. “Not all of them but some in the next week.”

Wednesday could be one of them.

Wilcox said he was pleased with the results of the practices so far, especially given the constraints necessitated by the coronavirus.” Everybody is so energized to be back on the field,” he said.”After the shelter in place and the uncertainty that surrounded us all summer. We are glad to get back on the field. It took a lot of work by a lot of people, doctors, coaches, support staff.to make that happen.”

Without being specific Wilcox said the team and staff, are “in a good place” as far as the coronavirus test results. Again, without specifics, he said the Bears’ injury situation was good.

He was asked about the position battle at left tackle and said that Will Craig, who missed virtually all of last year with an injury, has stepped to the forefront.

‘We will see when it comes to the depth chart. We have an idea when it comes to the ones, twos, and threes right now, “ he said. “But there is a lot to be determined.  Will Craig is taking most of the reps at left tackle. He has a good first four practices. We will see how that shakes out.”

And Wilcox defined the role of former Cal running back C.J. Anderson, who has joined the staff on a volunteer basis.

“ He can’t coach the player, there are rules to what he can and can’t do but he will be here in a volunteer role to help the offense,” Wilcox said. “He is a guy who has been through it, He had a really successful career both here and in the NFL. He is a resource for our players, the experience he has had along the way I think will be good. He wants to get into coaching and this will give him the big picture of what that entails “

Anderson came to Cal in 2011 as a transfer from Laney College. He played two years for the Bears before a seven-year NFL career.
