Matt Bradley Enters the Transfer Portal

April 2, 2021

Junior guard Matt Bradley has reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman.

A spokesperson from Cal’s athletics department independently verified to Bear Insider that Bradley is indeed currently in the transfer portal.

Bradley has led Cal in scoring the past two seasons. This season, Bradley averaged 18 points and 4.6 rebounds in 22 games. Bradley averaged 17.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore. For his career, Bradley has shot 40.4% from three-point range.

Just because Bradley has entered the portal doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll leave Cal. Players that put their name in the portal can and do return to their original schools. If Bradley does end up leaving, this would obviously be a huge blow to Cal’s roster next season and Head Coach Mark Fox’s rebuild.

We’ll be updating this story as we learn more.

We used to be really good at the sports that don't matter. Now we're barely good in anything. AD needs to go. Fox needs to go. And now the football is "well endowed," donation money should be used for stepping up the hires of every other sport.
Men's swimming finished 2nd in the NCAA's...Women finished 4th. Women's gymnastics, 5th ranked, just recorded the 2nd best team score in school history, won their regional, heading to the finals. Men's Water Polo finished 4th....
I won't list the AD accomplishments again...okay, except he worked his ass off to get the grad program...that counts for a lot so worth repeating.

In 2016 the third year under AD Mike Williams, Cal had National Championships in Rugby, Men's Rowing, Men's Water Polo, Women's Rowing, Women's Swimming and Diving and Women's Tennis. Men's basketball was 23-11 undefeated at home with a 4th seed. The football team had just come off an 8-5 season with the #1 player selected in the NFL draft. Women's basketball would go 20-14 losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Cal's success in a lot of sports transcends any particular AD.

Athletic performance has been trending down during Jim's tenure, coincidence or not. Ultimately, if Wilcox can figure out how to manage even just a meh offense, nothing else will matter. But so far that's a B I G if, given the 4 years of evidence that point to no.

Basketball is lost, and a nonstarter.

HAH! Well the best player on/in a bad team/program left - that's a rubber stamp if I ever saw one.

If you remember, Mark Fox did the same thing to Paris Austin. Made me scratch my head and wonder if we were watching the same game. Mark Fox seems to have a problem relating to his best players.

Yeah the only teams that have or had been doing well this season are track, men's water polo, both swim teams, beach VB and women's gymnastics. But you can't solely blame Knowlton for some team's demises, it's not all his fault

Campanelli did it to KJ and Kidd. It was an anachronism then. Coaching basketball is not playing chess. Nobody wants to be a chess piece. Basketball is not classical music, it is jazz. You set up a structure and then let the players improvise. You help them learn to make better decisions but that is not by punishing them for ones you don't like.

I don't blame or give credit to the AD for wins or losses per se. The AD's job is to make good hires and give the coach the resources to compete. Then market the program and get butts in the seats to pay for everything (or get donors to, or come up with new media funding ideas....).

Men's basketball and Women's basketball both had horrible seasons. However, I thought Charmin Smith was a good hire and as a first time head coach should be given time and that Fox was a bad hire, a proven mediocre coach. My biggest concern with Smith is that she is a Furd and we may just be grooming Vanderveer's successor. I don't follow women's basketball close enough to have an opinion on her coaching and recruiting and whether the future looks good.

Fox I thought was a bad hire, I did not like his Georgia teams. I thought they played ugly basketball. I thought he completely failed to capitalize on Georgia's potential. However, like Holmoe, Dykes, Jones and yes Wilcox, who I would not have hired, I was willing to give them a chance and root for them 100% Fox's initial team meeting was a disaster. The video of it was horrific marketing by the AD. I was not surprised when most of our starters headed for the exits. There is nothing I see in his game day coaching, roster decisions or recruiting that makes me think the future will be significantly better. However, he will get another year, so I can understand the impulse to want to stay positive, not to judge him, keep an open mind.

As much as I didn't like the Fox hire, I was more upset at the process and rationale that Knowlton shared in the press that resulted in the Fox hire. I have far more optimism that Fox will turn out to be the right basketball coach for Cal than that Knowlton will be the dynamic innovative AD Cal needs at this time.

I completely agree with you about Fox and he needs to be let go of ASAP. Wilcox on the other hand was not a bad hire, but he has his own weaknesses just like any other coach. Some may have been detrimental to the team's performance last season, but with their recruiting class and Garbers back at full strength, things could be trending upward. I don't follow the football team that closely, but I hope that the team can improve next season

I am good with Wilcox and hopeful.

He is not who I would have hired for a few reasons: 1) I generally think an offensive coach is better, the decision around who starts at QB, kick or go for it, time management are important for a HC and a defensive guy doesn't have a good feel for them. A defensive guy is too dependent on getting a good OC and then if they are good, they leave. Better for an offensive guy to hire a DC and turn the defense over to him. 2) Tedford gave Wilcox his first coaching job but then Wilcox hired his buddy Tosh as his DL coach and then flipped Shaq Thompson the week before LOI day. 3) Wilcox is an Oregon guy, so my concern would be that if he was ever successful enough at Cal they could poach him.

I got over all of that once Wilcox was hired. The problem has been mostly on offense. The three highest paid coaches (including Wilcox) coached the defense. Baldwin seemed like a good pick at OC, but I am now pretty sure Baldwin was not responsible for EWUs great offenses, OCs Best and Troy Taylor were.

Musgrave did even worse last year, but I buy that was due to COVID.

There is reason for optimism. Until this year Wilcox's best recruiting class was #8 in the PAC-12. This year it is #3, mostly due to the offensive talent. Musgrave needs to field a good offense this year with Garbers and next year with his successor.

Our defense had a great year in year 2 and has been average otherwise. With DeRuyter gone, Sirmon needs to step up. If we can have a good offense AND a good defense we can be a good team. The last time we had an offense AND a defense both ranked in the top half of college football was 2011 with Zach Maynard at QB.
Since then we have had some great offenses with horrific defenses and a great defense with a horrific offense. I have great hope we get good on both sides of the ball starting this Fall.

9 years in a power conference at a public university. Runs a "clean" program. Of the two guys he interviewed, Knowlton really "felt comfortable" with Fox and had great personal affinity for him. Unemployed so available to start right away (no need to wait until after the NCAA Tournament).

Garbers has been good as the starting QB for the Bears. The question now is who will replace him when he leaves for the NFL draft (provided he even goes that route), and who will back him up next season with Modster gone? I know they are stacked at QB with 3 other guys besides Garbers, plus a 4th who is an incoming freshie

No THIS is so Cal (SO Cal get it, someone like Matt Bradley can transfer to UCLA or SC without sitting):

Coach Fox is a proven winner. He inherited a horrible situation when the previous AD hired a terrible coach who ran the program into the ground. We were lucky that a coach of his caliber was even willing to come to CAL. Let the coach recruit for a few years and get his own players into school.

I thought he was joking but with what has been said seriously on this board (like Tedford's success was proof we should have kept Holmoe so long) I have given up trying to tell.

Kind of like the reality that programs like LSU, Georgia, tOSU, and other 'football-first' programs who couldn't care less if their BB program loses money.

Sure, same as football first schools like Baylor, USC, Alabama, Florida State, Michigan, Oregon, Wisconsin....
