Freshman TE Terry Ready to Go

When asked about who among the freshman class has impressed him, Cal head football coach Justin Wilcox has inevitably included tight end Jermaine Terry.

Just standing around Terry makes himself noticed. He is listed at 6-4, 275, and he is all of that, maybe a shade taller. Whatever, he is hard to miss. “You see him in person he’s a big dude,” said his fellow freshman, quarterback Kai Millner. “You go on paper and ‘OK, he’s 6-6, he’s big.’

“You have that impression going in, and then you walk up to him and stand next to him. You realize. He’s 6-6 and you start throwing balls to him and he’s strong, big strong hands.  He’s an impressive 6-6.”

Terry says catching the ball is something that has come fairly easily to him.

“I’ve always been a natural pass catcher. (I’ve) always been somebody that loves to go up and get it. It came naturally and I’ve always worked at it,” Terry said in the accompanying video.

He has developed an on-field relationship with Chase Garbers, but is also aware Garbers won’t be the only one throwing the ball this year.

“He’s a great quarterback,” Terry said when asked about the redshirt senior QB, Then he added, “All the quarterbacks in that room are great quarterbacks. They love throwing to tight ends. A lot of offenses don’t like doing that, but it’s great to use the skill set and contribute any way I can.’

For all his pass-receiving abilities, Terry said he prefers the grunt work that tight ends are often called upon to do.

“What I do like to do is block. That is something that I pride myself in, something I am trying to get better at,” he said. “It is not really hard to learn but it is something that you’ve got to nail

down and learn the technique. Being aggressive truly helps, and I’ve always got to work with my feet and hand placement.”

Being from Richmond, Terry feels quite at home in Berkeley.  “It’s great. I have been here multiple times,” he said. “Berkeley is pretty close to Richmond so I’ve always had a feel for the place. Fans are great, everybody is very welcoming. I love the place.”
