2024 The Woodlands  (The Woodlands, TX) High School QB Mabrey Mettauer has already piled up an impressive offer list as a soph. If his name sounds familiar, Mettauer is the younger brother of Cal offensive lineman McKade Mettauer. Obviously, football talent runs in the Mettauer family.

The 6-5/215 soph is no stranger to Cal, having visited several times since McKade has been recruited by Cal. His most recent visit wasn’t the best timing, with the Bears losing to a suddenly resurgent WSU team, 21-6 but the loss didn’t put much of a damper on the talented QB’s trip out West.

“I’ve grown up going to those games since about eighth grade so I know how good the program is,” said Mettauer. “I know they’re good. I look beyond that and know that they have the ability to play well.

“It was great to see my brother. I’ve missed him. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to see him.

“Cal’s in a great location, with San Francisco near by. It’s a great area.”

The younger Mettauer’s interest in Cal is partially tied to his brother’s experience in the program. He’s heard nothing but good reviews from big bro.

“He says he loves it at Cal,” said Mettauer. “Especially the academics. Because once you graduate from Berkeley, you can get a nice job very easily because it’s a great degree, obviously.

“He also loves the coaches there and I like the coaches there a lot, too.”

The visit was a quick but welcome one for Mettauer but in his several visits, he’s been able to get a strong sense of what the university and the Bay Area have to offer.

“It was a pretty quick trip,” said Mettauer. “But I’ve visited where we’ve had more of a chance to see the sites, like Alcatraz and San Francisco. It’s a great area.

“I’ve gotten to know a lot of the guys at Cal. I know a lot of the offensive linemen and a couple of the quarterbacks there and Brett Johnson and Blake Antzoulatos, his roommates. I’ve slept over at his house. It’s super fun hanging out with those guys there. And the cool thing about Cal is that everyone comes from a different background. It’s very diverse.”

Mettauer is familiar with the success quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff and Davis Webb have had coming from Cal, as well.

“Cal’s had some great quarterbacks come through there who have had the chance to play early and develop themselves for NFL careers, for sure.

“I’m really looking for a coach who just believes in me and will give me a great opportunity and a coach who will help me grow in my ability.”

Though just a soph, Mettauer’s offer list is already an impressive one. Besides Cal, Mettauer holds offers from LSU, Florida, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami, Kansas State and more.
