Multiple Cal Football Student-Athletes In COVID Protocol

BERKELEY, CA – Multiple Cal football student-athletes are in COVID protocol and will not be available to play in Saturday's game at Arizona. All student-athletes traveling to Tucson will be tested and cleared prior to departing the Bay Area. Everyone within the Cal football program is compliant with UC Berkeley's COVID-19 vaccine requirements, and 99 percent of football student-athletes are fully vaccinated. Due to state and federal student privacy laws, Cal Athletics is not able to comment on the personal health of individual student-athletes.

"Our primary concern is for the health of our student-athletes, and we continue to monitor the situation closely," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "As we know, this pandemic is not over. We need to respect it and understand that it can affect much of what we do every day. Even with 99 percent of our football student-athletes fully vaccinated, we have seen that breakthrough cases are still possible."

Was it this hard to wait until now to receive the particulars?

Not wanting AZ to know which personnel are and are not playing.

So they wouldn't hold us to negative points?
If they knew which offensive and defensive players were out, Arizona could have effectively tailored its game plan on both sides.

And we'd score less than 0?
I'm thinking we might score less than 3 and they'd score more than 3. Maybe you're right: we should announce in advance to the public all of our key players who will be out.

We gained 3 points with our strategy. So I guess it was the correct one. Not kidding.

Assuming this is true, why do we allow Berkeley Public Health to dictate protocol for a game in Arizona? We should just follow PAC-12 protocol.

I am still venting. Why the 3 or 4 read options? Glover made the wrong read on all of them and was no threat with his legs throughout.

https://covid-19.acgov.org/data.page?#geography

Choose DATA MAP
Move the map to view the Cal Campus area (94720)......
It's dark blue...
It shows that that area has the highest exposure rate.
Cal is not great at curbing COVID, where as the other Berkeley zip codes are very good.

Cheers!
Go Bears!!

I must have missed this. Was it Berkeley Public Health that dictated the protocol? What protocol in particular? The AD's statement says only that everyone in the program is compliant with UC Berkeley's protocols. Did all of the disqualified players and coaches test positive or was this a contact tracing thing. If it was just contact tracing I'd suspect even more players would have been disqualified. They're all in position group rooms together are they not? Yet the missing were in all different positions as were this present. I think only the RB's were fully present. Near the end of the game Pawlawski and Starkey hinted that the city was to blame. Wilcox in post game would not speculate who will be available next week or what protocols they will have to clear. He sounded quite pissed but did not specify whom he is mad at. If all of the players and coaches disqualified tested positive (which, again, no one has actually said yes or no) they really ought to isolate until they recover if symptomatic and test negative whether sympomatic or not, don't you think? Isn't that the rule in all sports, amateur and pro? Seven San Jose Sharks plus the coach, trainer and equipment manager all out. The city of San Jose's fault?

So, where did the team let its guard down? How did this happen? This virus is still with us folks. Article on the Chronicle website today says Bay Area cases are ticking up again.

As for Cal's play today, proud of the way they competed despite all the obstacles today. Especially the thinned out defense in the heat with the time of possession so lopsided. On offense, why was the backup quarterback so obviously ill prepared? No timing. No familiarity with his receivers. Does he get no practice reps with the regulars? I mean Garbers could get hurt at any time. You have to have a plan B. Okay sorry. Rant over. Thanks for listening.

Why does the City of Berkeley hate Cal football so much and why didn't the University just ignore the City. The University is on State owned property. UFB
Does the City not talk to Sacramento?

This is the biggest pregame non-story of the season.

It is a great example of how a situation can be blown totally out of proportion by people who have no idea what they are talking about and thus are spreading false information which other people assume is factual.

Someone could write a thesis on this one:

"The gullibility of humankind - how to convince someone of something that has no basis in fact".

It's called Russiagate
On a very small scale, this episode is another example of why this country is circling the drain. People have either lost the ability to employ the concept of critical thinking or never possessed it. Heck, if graduates of the "premier public university" in the country are behaving like this, it tells me a lot about how the university has failed its obligation to educate them.

You don't have to wonder anymore if you just hop on over to the OT board.

Thank God we kept our roster a secret until kickoff. It could have gotten really ugly.
