Bears Add Length with CSM receiver Mason Starling

After a three month dry spell, the Bears added their 10th commitment of their '22 class in 6-5/210 College of San Mateo WR Mason Starling on his official visit today. Mason is one of a host of official visits on the last recruiting weekend of the ‘22 class early signing period.

As a soph, Starling had 43 catches for 706 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games, helpig lead CSM to the NorCal JC championships this season, falling to CCSF.

The athletic and rangy receiver should nicely slot in for departing senior receiver Trevon Clark, adding the length at receiver the Bears are always looking for outside.

Starling joins ‘22 receiver Jaiven Plummer in the the Bears expected two receiver class. He will be an early enrollee in January and participate in spring ball.

Excellent addition to an impressive (albeit inexperienced) group of WRs and TEs.

Any encouraging developments on a standout transfer QB with a strong, accurate arm to distribute the ball to them?

Really impressive tape. Looks like a man among boys out there. The ferocity of his run blocking is nice. I bet he's an immediate big contributor.

Cal Strong thinks he has talent. But he very raw. Starling no know how to start running forward off the line of scrimmage.

Every single play on that tape, Starling either does a stutter step or puts his weight backwards on his rear foot before he starts running forward. This a natural thing for most of us. But at high levels of athletics, it is detrimental to first move backwards when your goal is to move forward. It is inefficient and wasted energy. It gives the DB an extra half a step on you.

Hitch on the get off or no, this guy looks better than an 81.5. We'll see if the hitch (that's all it is) can be corrected - would make him even better.

Very nice pickup. We've had a good hit rate on top ranked Juco players like Starling.
