4 Star DL Brandt Nearing Decision After Official Visit to Cal
4 star DE Cameron Brandt paid his fourth visit to Cal this weekend for an official visit and the fourth trip back to Berkeley didn’t disappoint.
“To me, it was really good to be back,” said Brandt. “That was my fourth trip up there so I’d already seen everthing but this biggest takeaway for me was getting the players’ perspective about playing there.
“I thought it was really nice being able to hang out with the players there and seeing how they felt about Cal was really good. They love it there. Everyone’s pushing each other to be great. They have high expectations for themselves and for each other so they hold each other accountable.”
Brandt’s hosts were redshirt frosh players Derek Wilkins and Akili Calhoun and the weekend’s events included taking in the Giants big 9-2 win over Cincinnati in perfect weather and a stop over to the Chase Cdnter, home of the NBA champion Warriors.
“The Giants game was really fun,” said Brandt. “That was really cool to see my first game in a major league stadium. It was a great game. And being in the Chase Center was cool, too.”
Being one of the earliest Cal defensive targets, Brandt’s had plenty of time to build a strong relationship with DL coach Andrew Browning.
“I have a really good relationship with Coach Browning,” said Brandt. “It’s been good throughout the whole recruiting process. We talk all the time and he always checks in on me. You can tell he really wants me there to build and help add on to his d-line room and I can tell the other d-linemen feel the same way, so that was cool.
“My mom and auntie really enjoyed the trip, too. They showed them great hospitality on the visit.”
As for timing and favorites, Brandt appears to be getting close to decison time after his two official visits in June.
“I’ll probably make my decision before the season,” said Brandt. “I kind of have my base two schools that I know I really want to go to, Cal and Stanford.
“Those two visits were really to see how much I feel at home at both places and how natural it was. Also, my comfort level being there and being around the players wasn’t like awkward, especially at Cal. It wasn’t awkward in any moments. You could be yourself. It was comfortable.”
The 6-4/260 Brandt had 14 solo tackles and 5 sacks as a soph playing for St. Bernard and 52 tackles and 5 ½ sacks for Sierra Canyon as a junior. The 4 star DL holds 14 offers, including eight from the Pac-12 including USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford and more as well as Michigan.
