Florida Punter Bobby Engstler Talks About His Commitment to Cal
The Bears added to their 2024 recruiting class with the addition today of Tallahassee, Florida punter Bobby Engstler today. The 6-0/200 punter also was a standout prep punter and kicker and earned a spot in the prestigious Under Armor All-American game, Cal’s first prep UA All-American signee in several years.
“I went last weekend to Cal,” Engstler said. “It was great. The campus was great, the school’s great. Everything about it was awesome, the coaches and everything. I was mainly there with Ryan Longwell and David Ortega on my visit.
“I always wanted to be a part of a strong academic school and Cal is obviously top of the line for that.”
Though he’s been recruited as a punter, Engstler noted the plan for Engstler is to compete for any of punter, kicker or kickoffs.
“I’m a combo kicker and can do all three,” Engstler said. “And if I don’t win out on any of those, I’ll take my redshirt year on scholarship and will get the leadership from Lachlan (Wilson) and Ryan Coe. I’ve kicked with Ryan Coe before and he’s probably got the biggest leg I’ve seen in my life.”
As of late October, Engstler had 20 touchbacks averaging 67.2 per kickoff, and was a perfect 13-for-13 on field goals and PATs. he also averaged 44.1 yards per punt, with 11 of his 15 total punts ending up inside the 20-yard line.
Engstler was one of the highest-rated punters by Kohl’s Kicking at #3 in the nation and the #1 overall punter/kicker.
"Bobby is the most consistent high school punter in the 2024 class," Jamie Kohl said. "He has shown an ability perform at a high level against other good players at multiple events. Bobby has an ability to focus and has refined his technique to the point he can “call on it”. Like every freshman a lot of Bobby’s success will be based on how he adapts to the college environment. I personally feel Bobby will have an outstanding college career."
The high school senior was set to walk-on at Florida with an NIL agreement and the opportunity to earn a scholarship when a starting position was earned but the talented punter will come in to Cal as a full scholarship player, battling with senior punter Lachlan Wilson. He will arrive in the summer as a late signing period signee. Engslter becomes the 29th addition to Cal’s 2024 class with prep, JC, portal and grad transfer signees.
