Bears Beat Out Tough Competition for Sierra Canyon ATH Jae'on Young

The Bears picked up yet another commitment on their official visit weekend today with a verbal from 4 star Sierra Canyon ATH Jae’on Young. The 6-0/165 Young is a high prospect on both sides of the ball but will likely play cornerback for the Bears in 2025. He is the third commitment from the weekend visits.

"One thing that stood out to me the most was not even about the football program, but about the 40-year plan," Young said after his commitment. "Just the connections I'll be able to make at Cal. I got to talk a lot about life after football up there. And I had a really great meeting about what I'm planning on majoring in. I'm interested in going into sports broadcasting and major in American Studies. So those two things stood out right off the bat.

“And then from the football aspect, the whole coaching staff, everybody's authentic and real. They give it to you how it is and are very genuine, especially the position I play, defensive back, Cal is known for producing defensive backs. They've put out six defensive backs in the last five years. So that alone just told me everything along with Coach TB and Coach Watson, as well. Those things all stood out to me."

The newest Bear also had a high comfort level with his future teammates on his visit.

"I got a really great chance to hang out with players, even off campus," Young said. We went to go do some bonding with them Saturday and Sunday and had a great time with them as well. I got to pick their brains and I was very comfortable with them. I also got a chance to be around Lebron Williams, who committed, too.

"I'm definitely planning on getting up there sometime this year, for sure. I gotta make it to some games. Gotta get up there a couple of times before I go up. But I'm planning on enrolling in January."

Holding offers from USC, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Texas A&M and more, the Bears secured a commitment on Young’s first official visit.

On offense, Young totaled 21 catches for 384 yards (18.3 ypc) and 4 TDs and on defense, he added 29 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 interception, 8 passes defended and 1 recovered fumble, helping lead Sierra Canyon to a 12-0 record before falling to national power Mater Dei in the CIF playoffs in their final game.

Equally adept on the track, Young clocked stellar times of 10.77 seconds in the 100 and 21.87 in the 200 in his Sophomore year.   Young sat out his Junior year track season after a minor leg injury.

Young becomes the 11th commit of prep commit of the 2025 class, joining RBs Jojo Solis‍, Anthony League‍, WR Meyer Swinney‍, OL Ben Howard‍, DE Ike Okafor‍, edge Lebron Williams‍, linebackers Carter Jones‍, Ke’Breion Winston and Beckham Barney‍ as well as CB Kaden Cook‍. Young plans to be an early enrollee in January.

Welcome to The University of California! I'm assuming he'll play CB (probably nickel) at the next level but with his speed and toughness he could excel at multiple positions. Regardless, that's up to Mr. Young and the coaches; most importantly, congratulations and welcome to the Bear Family!

Welp, so much for "he has scheduled OVs for June 14th with Kansas and June 21st with BC, with the possibility of more OVs being added ahead of 'a summertime decision'." Cal was the last of his P4 offers (May of '24), and the first of his scheduled OVs. And they slammed the door shut.

Congratulations, young man looking forward to see you develop into a shutdown corner. You will not only work hard on the field but also in the classroom. You have not only made the right decision for your football career but also to set yourself up for life. Welcome to the CAL family.
