The Bears are not going gentle into that good night.
After four-star ATH Elyjah Staples announced his commitment to Cal at around 10 p.m. PT on Saturday, four-star Grant Union (Sacramento) tight end Rahzario “Zo” Edwards — who is On3’s No. 1 prospect at the position in California — followed suit at around 11 p.m. PT.
Edwards, a consensus four-star at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, held offers from Alabama, Michigan, Miami, Oregon, Stanford, Florida, Colorado, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Washington, Ole Miss and plenty others.
He chose Cal.
Also a hooper, Edwards’ speed, athleticism and perhaps most importantly, hands, are evident in his film.
The Bears have found and developed several promising tight ends over recent years, from Jack Endries to Mason Mini to Dorian Thomas to Taimane Purcell, among others.
It appears Edwards is the next in line to thrive and produce in Berkeley.
Expect more prospects to announce their commitments to Cal shortly. Assistant general manager Marshall Cherrington posted the bat signal five times throughout Saturday, and Staples and Edwards seem to be the first two dominoes to fall.
But for now, the Blue and Gold faithful have much to celebrate, as Cal’s 2027 class is looking loaded like a baked potato from an expensive steakhouse.
