Bears Net a Big Pickup for 2019 in Smith

4 star 6'5 Houston junior shooting guard Charles Smith IV maked an early commitment to Cal, topping off what's looking to be a stellar 2018 class as their final pieces fall into place.

A Houston native that played two years ago with Cal guard Darius McNeill and 2018 wing small forward Jacobi Gordon in Cal assistant coach Chris Walker's former AAU program, Smith will be joining a far different roster than the young Bears showcased in 2017-18.

If it weren't for Gray's tragic injuries, the answer would easily be: the one with the biggest NBA career: Allen.

You mean both feet planted and then straight up?
Not even a 1-step drop?

Damn, that's crazy.

So I can barely touch the ceiling, which would be an 8' drywall sheet.
Yet, if I stand under the basket and try to touch the rim, I come nowhere close. So, what's my vertical (pre-getting old)? 18-20"?
I have no idea, but 42" can't seem real.


Then again....
I was in Ann Arbor shortly after Rumeal Robinson won the natl championship with a key reverse slam dunk where he found himself planted under the basket and just rose up and dunked it. I recalled on that play celebrating with an audible "Holy Sh*t!!" So, I was driving along and the person I was with said, "hey, there's Rumeal Robinson!" I quickly parked and ran into the convenience store he had entered, and there he was at the counter. I told him excitedly I was from California, wanted to shake his hand and such. He was all smiles and polite. I told him I had no idea he could get up that high on the reverse slam play, he was just like, "oh, yeah, right." Rumeal wasn't much bigger than me. I guess that's what a "42 vertical looks like.

Well, I actually edited (didn't take) my initial question to :
A) running start
B) 1-step drop step
C) completely flat footed with both feet.

Are you saying the test is done with B?

I still couldn't touch rim that way... maybe get within an inch or two.
Running start I could get 2-3 knuckles on it. Maybe dunk a cotton ball. Yeah, probably. I shoulda tried that.

How about you?

My best friend in high school was 6'0" and high jumped 6'4" as a junior! High hurdles star. I brought him into the gym to get him to dunk. He could barely get rim, too. Hahaha. Of course, he only ever jumped up at a rim those 3 times in his life, so... go figure.

I think he got tested with one step. Definitely not running.

At 5'11, I could never touch the rim. I was probably @28 inch vert or so. Decent long jumper in track.

I think a 6 foot tall man can reach nearly 8' on tippy toes.
A 24" vertical would have you touching rim.

Are you saying with a running start you couldn't touch rim?
How do you figure 28 inches? You'd have been there!
